Cross-vehicle injury spillovers of ADAS functions in two-vehicle rear-end and same-direction sideswipe crashes

Abstract

Advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) functions are evaluated mainly by the crashes they prevent, and little is known about how they relate to the injuries sustained in the crashes that would still occur. Because two colliding vehicles share one impact, a function on one vehicle may also be associated with the other driver's injury. This study examines whether an ADAS function on either vehicle in such two-vehicle crashes is associated with either driver's injury. It focuses on rear-end (n = 2,273) and same-direction sideswipe crashes (n = 1,216) from Texas police reports across 2023 to 2025. Striking and struck roles were assigned within each crash, and the ADAS functions of each vehicle were identified from vehicle identification numbers. For each crash type, a bivariate probit model, with random parameters for rear-end crashes, jointly estimates whether each driver was injured. Significant cross-equation correlations (0.559 and 0.375) support the joint specification. Electronic stability control on the striking vehicle is associated with a lower struck-driver injury probability in both crash types, by 0.036 to 0.073 in rear-end and 0.102 in sideswipe crashes. Lane departure warning on the striking vehicle shows a similar association in sideswipe crashes (about 0.078). Traction control with anti-lock braking on the struck vehicle shows the largest association among the ADAS functions with its own driver's injury probability (0.097 and 0.103 lower). No struck-vehicle function is associated with the striking driver's injury, and forward-looking functions show no association with either driver's injury, consistent with their benefit lying mainly in crash prevention. The findings suggest that the protective benefits of stability and lane departure functions may reach beyond the equipped vehicle to the other driver, strengthening the case for their wider fleet adoption.

A multistate approach to disability insurance reserving with information delays

Disability insurance claims are often affected by lengthy reporting delays and adjudication processes. The classic multistate life insurance modeling framework is ill-suited to handle such information delays since the cash flow and available information can no longer be based on the biometric multistate process determining the contractual payments. We propose a new individual reserving model for disability insurance schemes which describes the claim evolution in real-time. Under suitable independence assumptions between the available information and the underlying biometric multistate process, we show that these new reserves may be calculated as natural modifications of the classic reserves. For estimation of the model constituents, we employ the procedure proposed in [Buchardt, K., Furrer, C., & Sandqvist, O. L. (2025). Estimation for multistate models subject to reporting delays and incomplete event adjudication. The Annals of Applied Statistics, 19(4), 2782-2802. https://doi.org/10.1214/25-AOAS2068]. A real data application illustrates how the proposed estimation and reserving methods can be implemented and compares the resulting reserves with simpler reserving approaches.

Performance Guarantees for Permissionless Lending

We propose a lending protocol with far fewer risks than existing pool-based lending protocols (e.g., Aave, Compound). In our protocol, lenders and borrowers embody the spirit of decentralization by making competing interest-rate offers, resulting in the discovery of the prevailing interest rate through tâtonnement-like dynamics as opposed to taking rates partly determined by a central authority (e.g., Aave, Federal Reserve). We eliminate the risk of manipulation by creating loans with a fixed interest rate throughout the loan---like US Treasury bills. In particular, we further derive performance guarantees probabilities of repayment shortfall and liquidation by modeling the value of the collateral as a random walk, thus allowing participants to more efficiently manage their risk. To do so, we use characteristic functions and Fourier inversion to derive exact integral representations of the liquidation and repayment shortfall probabilities under the most general assumptions. We illustrate empirically this method by using Bitcoin as collateral and fitting its historical prices to Gaussian, Student-$t$, and symmetric stable Paretian distributions.

Covariance spectra of random linear systems near instability

We study how stationary variance is distributed among the principal components of a randomly coupled linear system near instability. The coupling matrix has entries $N^{-1/2}ξ_{ij}$, where the $ξ_{ij}$ are independent copies of a bounded, centered real random variable of variance one. As $N\to\infty$ and the excess damping $δ_N\to0$, we prove that the covariance spectrum, with eigenvalues rescaled by $δ_N^2$ and weighted by their shares of the total variance, converges in probability to an explicit beta-product law. The convergence holds throughout $δ_N\ge N^{-1/2+\varepsilon}$ for every fixed $0<\varepsilon<1/2$. The law describes eigenvalues of order $δ_N^{-2}$ at ranks of order $Nδ_N^{3/2}$. Its limiting rank profile decays as $r^{-4/3}$ at large normalized rank and determines how many principal components retain a prescribed fraction of the stationary variance. The proof combines an exact computation of planar moments, uniform estimates for growing matrix words that accommodate nonsymmetric entry distributions, and resolvent bounds controlling the contribution of long times.
