Negative-Power Density of States in Chiral-Orthogonal Disordered Systems and the IR Phase of QCD

Abstract

The recently discovered IR phase of QCD is characterized by an infrared (IR) sector of Dirac modes that separates and dynamically decouples from the bulk of the spectrum, becoming scale invariant in the process [1]. Among key features of this IR sector is the negative power-law behavior of Dirac spectral density near zero with power $p$ close to $-1$. Here we start investigating to what extent can this behavior be mimicked by chiral Anderson models. In particular, we study 3-D chiral-orthogonal systems with logarithmic off-diagonal disorder where negative-power ``spikes'' have been observed [2]. We find that at finite disorder strength $W$ of moderate strength, these models in fact do not have a power-singular density of states (DOS) at zero energy in the thermodynamic limit. Rather, this power $p_1$ vanishes and the spectrum features a very accurate power behavior with $p<0$ on an interval around $E = 1$ spreading increasingly closer to $E=0$ and $E = \infty$ with increasing $W$. We connect this to the fact that random hoppings $t$ in these quantum systems are drawn from a scale-invariant $1/t$ distribution regularized via $t \in [e^{-W/2}, e^{W/2}]$, and DOS with negative power can naturally arise inside that range. We show that $\lim_{W \to \infty} p(W, E)=-1$ for all energies accessible by our data. This indicates that, upon removing the cutoff $W$, quantum mechanics transforms the scale-invariant $1/t$ noise into a scale-invariant $1/E$ distribution of eigenstates, which mimics the interpretation of scale-invariant Dirac spectral densities in the IR phase as being due to scale-invariant glue backgrounds [1]. Our results imply that, to model the IR sector of the IR phase, the IR cutoff in chiral Anderson systems needs to be viewed as descending from the randomness strength $W$ rather than the lattice size $L$.

QCD on the 16-cell honeycomb

We formulate QCD discretized on the four dimensional 16-cell honeycomb. The advantage is a higher degree of rotational symmetry as compared to a traditional cubic lattice leading to much smaller cut-off effects. We demonstrate in quenched QCD, through both gluonic and fermionic observables, that the scaling properties are indeed superior to the cubic lattice and much larger lattice spacings are sufficient for controlled continuum extrapolations. Chiral and topological properties also show remarkable improvement.

A different kind of continuum limit for the three-dimensional U(1) gauge theory

In three-dimensional compact U(1) lattice gauge theory color confinement can be understood analytically through the dynamics of magnetic monopoles. However, its continuum limit is pathological, since the ratio of the glueball masses to the square root of the string tension vanishes as the continuum limit is approached. We investigate a simple extension of the Wilson action in which the total number of lattice monopoles is coupled to an additional parameter $μ$. By tuning $β$ and $μ$ simultaneously, we identify a line of constant physics along which the ratio of the lightest glueball mass to the square root of the string tension remains constant. We further show that the same scaling is satisfied, within numerical uncertainties, by the other low-lying glueball masses considered in this work. Along this trajectory, the string tension in lattice units decreases with increasing $β$, thus suggesting that the modified lattice action may provide a regularization of three-dimensional compact U(1) gauge theory with a physically well-behaved continuum limit.

Large-$N$ $π^+π^+$ scattering from twisted Eguchi--Kawai reduction

We present the first computation of the $π^+π^+$ scattering length in large-$N$ QCD in the 't Hooft limit, $N_{\scriptscriptstyle{\rm f}}/N\to 0$, using the twisted Eguchi--Kawai formulation of the lattice theory. We employ values of $N$ up to 1156 and consider several quark masses and lattice spacings to achieve controlled large-$N$, continuum, and chiral limits. The chiral behavior of the scattering length is compared with next-to-leading-order Chiral Perturbation Theory predictions. Our result for the low-energy coupling describing the sub-leading quark-mass dependence is consistent with existing S-matrix bootstrap bounds. Combining TEK results with previous lattice QCD data obtained using standard methods for $3\le N\le 6$, we are also able to extract sub-leading $\mathcal{O}(1/N)$ corrections to the large-$N$ scattering length.
