Degree-one cohomology of metacyclic $2$-groups: a low-bit dichotomy

Abstract

We study the subalgebra generated by degree-one mod-$2$ cohomology for metacyclic $2$-groups $G=\langle a,b\mid a^{2^α}=1,\ b^{2^m}=a^c,\ b^{-1}ab=a^r\rangle$ with unique normal forms, where $α,m\ge2$ and $r\equiv-1\pmod4$. Presentation compatibility forces $c=0$ or $2^{α-1}$ and $G^{\mathrm{ab}}\cong C_2\times C_{2^m}$. If $c\equiv0\pmod4$, the degree-one-generated algebra is $\mathbb{F}_2 [x,y]/(y^2,x^2+xy)$, a four-dimensional algebra shared by the four nonmodular types of Aaboun--Zekhnini. The unique exceptional case $α=2$, $c=2$ is modular and has infinite-dimensional degree-one algebra $\mathbb{F}_2[x,y]/(y^2,x^2y)$. The regular algebra is PBW, Koszul, universally Koszul, and strongly Koszul, whereas the modular algebra is not Koszul. We realize the regular algebra by inflation from the common quotient $C_4\rtimes_{-1}C_4$ and identify its quadratic dual with the characteristic-two Jordan plane. For the inversion tower $C_4\rtimes_{-1}C_{2^m}$, we give uniform presentations of the full mod-$2$ cohomology rings and determine the kernels and images of inflation in every degree. Their direct limit yields the continuous cohomology ring of $C_4\rtimes_{-1}\mathbb Z_2$. We also record an arithmetic consequence for Galois groups arising over cyclotomic $\mathbb Z_2$-extensions of real quadratic fields.

Failure of the congruence Hasse principle for commutators in orientable surface groups

Ghosh, Meiri and Sarnak showed that the commutator equation over $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{Z})$ satisfies a profinite local to global principle, and that for a prime $\ell\equiv\pm1$ mod $5$ it fails for $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{Z}[1/\ell])$ with a reciprocity obstruction. We extend the failure to surface groups. For the genus-$2$ surface group $Γ_2$ we construct an explicit representation $ρ:Γ_2\to\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathcal{O}_{K,S})$, where $K=\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{5})$ and $\mathcal{O}_{K,S}=\mathbb{Z}[\frac{1+\sqrt{5}}{2},\frac{1}{10}]$, whose quotients modulo the maximal ideals are the full groups $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{F}_q)$ except in residue characteristic $3$, where the quotient has order $24$. For every $k\ge2$ the word $[a_1,b_1]^k$ is not a commutator in $Γ_2$, while its image is a commutator in every one of these quotients. The same holds for every surface group $Γ_g$ with $g\ge2$.

The Ramanujan-Petersson and Selberg conjectures for Maass forms

We prove the Ramanujan-Petersson conjecture for Maass forms of the group $SL(2,Z)$, with the help of automorphic distribution theory and pseudodifferential analysis. The first notion is an alternative to classical automorphic function theory, in which the plane takes the place usually ascribed to the hyperbolic half-plane. The Selberg conjecture for Hecke's group $Γ_0(M)$ follows as well.

Actions of acylindrically hyperbolic groups on $\ell^1$

We construct explicit affine uniformly Lipschitz actions on $\ell^1$ for certain groups with hyperbolic features. For acylindrically hyperbolic groups, our actions have unbounded orbits, while for residually finite hyperbolic groups and for mapping class groups, the actions have proper orbits, with the induced $\ell^1$-metric quasi-isometric (respectively, almost quasi-isometric, up to a logarithmic factor) to the word metric. This allows us to construct proper continuous affine uniformly Lipschitz actions on $L^1$, with undistorted orbits, for all simple groups of real rank one.
