On the $d$-invariants of Brieskorn spheres and $\mathrm{GL}(2,\mathbb{Z})$

Abstract

We study the $d$-invariant from Heegaard Floer homology for Brieskorn spheres $Σ(p,q,r)$. Using surgeries on two singular fibers, we establish new relations of the $d$-invariants among various Brieskorn spheres. For $p=2$, we show that $d$ never vanishes if $q/r$ lies in certain intervals on the rational line. Altogether, we completely classify Brieskorn spheres $Σ(2,q,r)$ with $d=0$. The zero set is expressed using submonoids of $\mathrm{GL}(2,\mathbb{Z})$ and the Stern--Brocot tree. As an application, we prove that most Brieskorn spheres $Σ(2,q,r)$ do not bound a rational homology $4$-ball.

Quasi-ribbon but non-ribbon surface-link of trivial components

An operation on a surface-link preserving the surface-knot components called a quasi-equivalence is introduced, which induces an equivalence relation on the surface-links. A quasi-ribbon surface-link is a surface-link quasi-equivalent to a ribbon surface-link. It is shown that a surface-link of trivial components is a quasi-ribbon surface link if it has only at most one non-spherical component, whereas there exist examples that are not quasi-ribbon surface-links of trivial components when it has at least two aspherical components. For every closed disconnected, orientable surface, a quasi-ribbon but non-ribbon surface-link of trivial components is constructed. This construction is done by applying a positive solution to Cochran's conjecture, meaning that the sphere-knot obtained from the anti-parallel sphere-link of every non-ribbon sphere-knot by surgery along an s-nontrivial or s-trivial fusion 1-handle is a non-ribbon or trivial sphere-knot, respectively.

Fusion of boundary surface-link and ribbonness

A boundary surface-link of at least two components in the 4-sphere is proved to be a ribbon surface-link if the surface-link obtained from it by surgery along a local S-nontrivial fusion 1-handle system is a ribbon surface-link. This paper presents a detailed proof of this result, including an appendix, although a similar result was previously published with a portion of the proof missing. The result is stated using the concept of a \lq\lq local fusion 1-handle\rq\rq, which is more precise than the earlier concept of a \lq\lq pairwise fusion 1-handle\rq\rq.

Handle decompositions and Kirby diagrams for the complement of plane algebraic curves

The complement of plane algebraic curves are well studied from topological and algebro-geometric viewpoints. In this paper, we will describe the explicit handle decompositions and the Kirby diagrams for the complement of plane algebraic curves. The method is based on the notion of braid monodromy. We refined this technique to obtain handle decompositions and Kirby diagrams.
