Factorization of Elliptic Divisibility Sequences via Modular Curves

Abstract

In this paper, we give a structural factorization of elliptic divisibility sequences in terms of finitely many modular functions on the modular curve $X_1(N)$. More precisely, we express the functions obtained by pulling back division polynomials along the universal torsion section as products of fixed modular factors. Then we show that this factorization is compatible with the natural action of $(\mathbb{Z}/N\mathbb{Z})^\times$ on the modular curve $X_1(N)$ and so descends to the modular curve $X_0(N)$ via the norm map. As applications, we obtain a perfect power criterion, local and global growth estimates for the associated elliptic divisibility sequences.

Hypergeometric Motives from Toric Hypersurfaces

In this paper, we study two compactifications of general hypersurfaces defined by the vanishing of linear combinations of $d+2$ monomials in $d$-dimensional algebraic tori. We prove that the number of their $\mathbb{F}_q$-points is given by finite hypergeometric sums under certain general conditions. In the process, we introduce the notion of a gamma triple, which allows us to extend the classical definition of finite hypergeometric sums to prime powers corresponding to the cyclotomic field of definition of the associated monodromy representation. As a special case of our main results, we study the Dwork family and obtain a formula for the number of its $\mathbb{F}_q$-points. Our results generalise the work of Beukers, Cohen, and Mellit for finite hypergeometric sums defined over $\mathbb{Q}$.

p-adic Properties of Translated Division Polynomials and Somos Sequences

We study the periodicity and $p$-adic convergence of sequences of values of the translated division polynomials $(Ψ_n(P))_{n\geq 0}$, $(Φ_n(P))_{n\geq 0}$, and $(Ω_n(P))_{n\geq 0}$ evaluated at a pair of points on an elliptic curve. We prove that these sequences are purely periodic over finite fields. We then use their periodicity properties to prove that certain subsequences are $\mathbb{Z}_p$-Cauchy. Applying this result to Somos 4 and Somos 5 sequences yields analogous convergence results. We also establish pure periodicity modulo prime powers for the even- and odd-indexed subsequences of Somos 5 sequences under suitable hypotheses.

Coefficient choice in Galois-ring lifts of APN permutations: sharp unit-direction spectra and one-term optimal lifts

Permutation polynomials over the Galois ring $\mathrm{GR}(2^k,m)$ are nonlinear components for symmetric primitives that add keys in the ring, as in secure computation modulo $2^k$. Rønjom and Sandrib showed that their differential uniformity is at least $2q^{k-1}$, where $q=2^m$. For the class studied here it is attained on top-layer differences, while almost all differences are units. We ask how small the difference table can be on unit differences when the residue permutation is fixed and only higher coefficient digits of its lift are chosen. Let $m\ge5$ be odd, $k\ge3$, and let $p$ be a reduced quadratic almost perfect nonlinear (APN) permutation of $\mathbb{F}_q$ whose derivative is nowhere zero and two-to-one. Over all lifts of $p$, the least possible maximum on unit differences is $q$ or $2q$, decided by two invariants of $p$ and the level $k$. We describe every lift attaining it and show that the coefficients modulo $8$ decide optimality at every level. For every odd $m\ge5$, residue permutations with at most $16$ monomials attain $q$ after one $2$-adic digit of one coefficient of the natural lift is changed. For an explicit infinite family, one added monomial lowers the maximum on unit differences from $4q$, or from at least $q^2$, to $2q$ at every level without raising the degree. Under a uniform starting state and independent uniform round keys, valuation preservation yields layerwise bounds for characteristics and two-round differentials that distinguish lifts with the same global uniformity. Core results are formalized in Lean 4.
