Effects of Dust in Electron-Capture Supernovae: Difficulty in Explaining Intermediate Luminosity Red Transients

Abstract

The progenitors of intermediate-luminosity red transients (ILRTs) spanning the luminosity gap between novae and supernovae are under debate, and electron-capture supernovae (ECSNe) have been proposed as a strong candidate. ECSNe from super asymptotic giant branch (super-AGB) stars have been theoretically predicted to be much brighter than ILRTs, but attenuation by dusty winds of their super-AGB progenitors may ease this tension. Here we construct a semi-analytical framework for calculating the light curves of ECSNe with dust attenuation and re-emission, by combining recent ECSN light curve predictions with a model for dust physics. Even by varying both the wind mass-loss rate and the ECSN model parameters, we find it challenging to simultaneously fit the light curve and color evolution of ILRTs. This poses a potential challenge to the standard models of ECSNe for explaining ILRTs. For explaining ILRTs, we propose either the existence of a population of ECSNe with much lower explosion energies ($\sim$10$^{48}$-$10^{49}$ erg) and dimmer plateaus, or alternative model(s) to ECSNe that realize such low explosion energies.

WFST Follow-up of S251112cm: Searching for an Optical Counterpart to a Subsolar-mass Compact-binary Merger Candidate

Electromagnetic counterparts to gravitational-wave (GW) sources probe the properties, environments, and evolution of compact-object mergers. S251112cm belongs to an emerging class of GW candidates with possible subsolar-mass components. We present an optical counterpart search for S251112cm with the Wide Field Survey Telescope (WFST). Observations began 20.2 hr after the GW trigger and lasted three nights, covering approximately 780 deg$^2$ and 51% of the localization probability in the updated skymap. Our search for newly emerging, rapidly evolving, off-nuclear optical transients yielded four candidates with host-galaxy distances broadly consistent with the GW distance estimate. All four evolve substantially more slowly than AT 2017gfo, ruling out an AT 2017gfo-like origin and disfavoring their association with S251112cm as rapidly evolving kilonova counterparts. Combining WFST and DECam increases the localization probability coverage to approximately 67%. Assuming the counterpart lies within this footprint, we constrain a grid of binary-neutron-star kilonova models. For viewing angles $θ_{\rm obs}<60^\circ$, with other parameters fixed to the AT 2017gfo best-fit values, models with dynamical ejecta mass $M_{\rm dyn}\gtrsim0.01 M_\odot$ or wind ejecta mass $M_{\rm wind}\gtrsim0.05 M_\odot$ are disfavored over most of the covered GW probability. Our phenomenological analysis further constrains rapidly evolving optical transients with $T_{\rm rise,1/2}\leq2$ days to peak absolute magnitudes fainter than approximately -13 mag. To our knowledge, WFST provides the strongest optical constraints to date in the northern sky on possible rapidly evolving counterparts to this new class of GW candidates with subsolar-mass components. The comparable depths and complementary sky coverage of WFST and DECam extend these constraints across more of the localization region at similar sensitivity.

PBR sensitivity to boosted dark matter explanation for the KM3-230213A event

POEMMA-Balloon with Radio (PBR) is a hybrid fluorescence and optical Cherenkov telescope that is a pathfinder instrument for a future Probe Of Extreme Multi-Messenger Astrophysics (POEMMA), together with a radio instrument, to be flown on a super pressure balloon in Spring 2028. One of its science objectives is follow up of astrophysical event alerts via signals of tau decays in the atmosphere, sourced by Earth-skimming tau neutrinos. The recent report of the KM3NeT Collaboration's muon event with $ E_μ=120^{+110}_{-60}$ PeV sparked searches for beyond the standard model (BSM) physics explanations. Using a specific, boosted dark matter scenario which together with the KM3NeT observation, sets a scale for the fluence of boosted dark matter in this energy range, we assess the capabilities of PBR to constrain or discover such a source for a boosted dark matter energy spectrum above $\sim 10^8$ GeV. PBR has discovery potential for dark matter energies above $10^9$ GeV, and depending on BSM input parameters, to dark matter energies as low as $1.5\times 10^8$ GeV. While the analysis is focused on one BSM example, the methodology is applicable to any BSM physics that affects tau production in the Earth.

Three-flavor neutrino Boltzmann transport and flavor instabilities in long-lived neutron-star merger remnants

Binary neutron-star (BNS) mergers are multimessenger sources whose kilonova emission and nucleosynthesis depend sensitively on neutrino microphysics and flavor conversion. Most BNS merger simulations assume $μ$-$τ$ neutrino degeneracy in a two-flavor treatment. We investigate the fast flavor instability (FFI) and the collisional flavor instability (CFI) in long-lived BNS merger remnants using axisymmetric general-relativistic three-flavor Boltzmann neutrino transport with a comprehensive treatment of muons and muonic interactions, following a handoff from 3D grey moment-based simulations. Our simulations largely reproduce the parent 3D simulations, recovering trapped weak equilibrium in the core, muonic non-equilibrium in the semitransparent outer disk due to prolonged demuonization, and cold weak equilibrium in transparent regions. Linear stability analysis reveals strong and widespread CFI in all three flavor sectors, including narrow resonance-like structures. Muonic interactions reshape the FFI distribution, shifting the $eτ$-sector instability toward denser disk regions compared with the extended FFI outside the disk in the two-flavor model, while disk demuonization produces a strong $ν_μ$ excess and one-sided muon-lepton-number angular distributions that suppress FFI in the $eμ$ and $μτ$ sectors. Local three-flavor quantum kinetic equation (QKE) calculations reveal nonlinear coupling among flavor sectors that excites coherence even in an initially stable sector. Diagonal collisional repopulation is decisive for the nonlinear evolution and asymptotic flavor populations, and neglecting it overestimates flavor equilibration. We establish the necessity of three-flavor transport from both classical and quantum perspectives, and underscore the importance of consistently coupling flavor conversion with diagonal collisional repopulation in future CFI subgrid models.
