Explicit matrix hitting points for noncommutative algebraic branching programs

Abstract

We give a deterministic polynomial-resource black-box identity test for noncommutative algebraic branching programs (ABPs), using ordinary matrix evaluations of the output polynomial. Given an alphabet of size $m\ge1$ and an ABP vertex bound $S\ge1$, we construct one fixed tuple of integer matrices of order $R=(m+2)d(d+1)/2$, where $d=(m+2)S$, with entry bit length $O(d\log(d+1))$. Every nonzero polynomial computed by an ABP with at most $S$ vertices has a nonzero evaluation at this tuple. The construction accesses neither the hidden ABP nor its intermediate gates. A rectangular variant improves the order to $O(m^{3/2}S^2)$. Matrix order, description length, and all returned entries are counted; the total resources are polynomial. The result holds in characteristic zero and in characteristic $p>\binom d2$. The main ingredient is a fixed polynomial frame spanning the joint cyclic module of every matrix tuple from every prescribed vector. A compensating block makes a tagged encoding nilpotent of index at most three, while preserving the original cyclic module. A differential exterior-vector argument then gives a single triangular recurrence with polynomially many outputs. Its shared left-linear circuit is converted into actual integer query matrices by coefficient duality. Two-sided pairing further gives deterministic nonadaptive reconstruction of an equivalent ABP from polynomially many output-only matrix queries. The same frame gives polynomial-cardinality explicit trace separators for simultaneous-conjugation orbit closures, and a fixed nilpotent substitution for bounded-dimensional recognizable series. The latter also tests rational formulas whose given syntax is defined at the scalar origin. We provide complete proofs, construction costs, and exact implementation checks.

A sharp weighted commutator inequality for rank-one matrices

Let $A\in\mathbb{C}^{n\times n}$ be positive definite Hermitian, where $n\ge 2$, and define $\|X\|_A^2=\mathrm{tr}(AX^*X)$ for all $X\in\mathbb{C}^{n\times n}$. We determine the smallest constant $C_A$ for which $$ \|XY-YX\|_{\mathrm{F}}^2 \le C_A\|X\|_A^2\|Y\|_A^2 $$ holds for all rank-one $X,Y\in\mathbb{C}^{n\times n}$, where $\|\cdot\|_{\mathrm{F}}$ denotes the Frobenius norm. The constant depends only on the two smallest eigenvalues of $A$ and is determined by a strictly monotone scalar equation. This answers the sharp-constant question for rank-one matrices formulated by Fang and Cheng. We characterize all equality pairs. Also, we present an application to density matrices in quantum physics.

Remarks on the Farthing--Muhly--Yeend inverse semigroup of a finitely aligned higher-rank graph

Given a finitely aligned higher-rank $k$-graph $Λ$, Farthing, Muhly and Yeend (Semigroup Forum 2005) constructed an inverse semigroup $S_Λ$ to provide a groupoid model for the $C^*$-algebra of $Λ$. In this paper, we extend some of the existing results related to the semigroup structure of a graph inverse semigroup to the more general setting of the inverse semigroup $S_Λ$. We obtain geometric descriptions of the Green's relations on $S_Λ$, which effectively generalize the existing characterization of Green's relations on a graph inverse semigroup. We provide a simple and useful description of the Cuntz-Krieger ideal of the Booleanization of $S_Λ$ and, based on this, identify a certain $X$-to-join Booleanization of $S_Λ$, where the abstract and concrete Cuntz-Krieger relations agree. Besides the natural partial order, $S_Λ$ is also ordered by set-inclusion. This helps us to realize $S_Λ$ as a semigroup \emph{graded-ordered} by $\mathbb{Z}^k$ and, subsequently, gives rise to a full inverse subsemigroup $S_Λ^h$ of $S_Λ$, which is graded by $\mathbb{Z}^k$ in the usual sense. We show that the Kumjian-Pask algebra of $Λ$ is graded isomorphic to the quotient of the contracted semigroup algebra of $S_Λ^h$ by the tight ideal. In the final part of the paper, we show that a $k$-graph morphism $p:Λ_1\longrightarrow Λ_2$ that is injective and satisfies a certain path lifting property induces, in a natural way, an injective $0$-preserving semigroup homomorphism from $S_{Λ_1}$ to $S_{Λ_2}$. In view of this, we build a suitable categorical setup to conclude that the isomorphism established between the Kumjian-Pask algebra of $Λ$ and the tight ideal quotient of the semigroup algebra of $S_Λ^h$ is natural.

Upper Bounds on the Strassen CP Rank Gap and Symmetric Rank Gap of Third-Order Tensors

For two third-order tensors over $\mathbb{R}$ or $\mathbb{C}$, we define the Strassen CP rank gap as the sum of their CP ranks minus the CP rank of their direct sum. For arbitrary third-order tensors, we derive explicit upper bounds on this gap in terms of CP rank excess and dimension. For symmetric third-order tensors, we similarly define the Strassen symmetric rank gap using symmetric rank and establish explicit upper bounds in terms of symmetric rank excess, CP rank excess, and dimension. These bounds also yield sufficient conditions for the respective gaps to vanish, ensuring additivity of CP rank or symmetric rank under direct sums.
