Measuring structural restraint in an amorphous material using the variance of speckle intensity
Abstract
An experimentally accessible measure of structural restraint in supercooled liquids is defined based on the variance of the intensity of speckle pattern arising from elastic scattering of coherent radiation. Using simulation data, the resulting measure of structural restraint is shown to correlate with the temperature dependence of the shear modulus and the Debye-Waller factor. The paper includes consideration of the influence of the choice of the scattering wavevector and the degree of coarse graining used in intensity measurements on the measured restraint.
