Plasmon enhancement of Coulomb drag in double quantum well systems

Abstract

We derive an expression for the drag rate (i.e., interlayer momentum transfer rate) for carriers in two coupled two-dimensional gases to lowest nonvanishing order in the screened interlayer electron--electron interaction, valid for {\sl arbitrary} intralayer scattering mechanisms, using the Boltzmann transport equation. We calculate the drag rate for experimentally relevant parameters, and show that for moderately high temperatures ($T\gtrsim 0.2 T_F$, where $T_F$ is the Fermi temperature) the dynamical screening of the interlayer results in a large enhancement of the drag rate due to the presence of coupled plasmon modes. This plasmon enhancement causes the scaled drag rate to have a peak (i) as a function of temperature at $T \approx 0.5 T_F$, and (ii) as a function of the ratio of densities of the carriers in the two layers when their Fermi velocities are equal. We also show that the drag rate can be significantly affected by the {\sl intralayer} scattering mechanisms; in particular, the drag rate changes approximately by a factor of 2 when the dopant layer modulation doped structures are moved in from 400~Åto 100~Å.

Quasiperiodic functions theory and the superlattice potentials for a two-dimensional electron gas

We consider Novikov problem of the classification of level curves of quasiperiodic functions on the plane and its connection with the conductivity of two-dimensional electron gas in the presence of both orthogonal magnetic field and the superlattice potentials of special type. We show that the modulation techniques used in the recent papers on the 2D heterostructures permit to obtain general quasiperiodic potentials for 2D electron gas and consider the asymptotic limit of conductivity when $τ\rightarrow \infty$. Using the theory of quasiperiodic functions we introduce here the topological characteristics of such potentials observable in the conductivity. The corresponding characteristics are the direct analog of the "topological numbers" introduced previously in the conductivity of normal metals.

Random-Matrix Theory of Quantum Size Effects on Nuclear Magnetic Resonance in Metal Particles

The distribution function of the local density of states is computed exactly for the Wigner-Dyson ensemble of random Hamiltonians. In the absence of time-reversal symmetry, precise agreement is obtained with the "supersymmetry" theory by Efetov and Prigodin of the NMR lineshape in disordered metal particles. Upon breaking time-reversal symmetry, the variance of the Knight shift in the smallest particles is reduced by a universal factor of 2/3. ***To be published in Physical Review B.****

Andreev Reflection In Ferromagnet-Superconductor Junctions

The transport properties of a ferromagnet-superconductor (FS) junction are studied in a scattering formulation. Andreev reflection at the FS interface is strongly affected by the exchange interaction in the ferromagnet. The conductance G_FS of a ballistic point contact between F and S can be both larger or smaller than the value G_FN with the superconductor in the normal state, depending on the ratio of the exchange and Fermi energies. If the ferromagnet contains a tunnel barrier (I), the conductance G_FIFS exhibits resonances which do not vanish in linear response -- in contrast to the Tomasch oscillations for non-ferromagnetic materials.
