The Constraints in Spherically Symmetric General Relativity I --- Optical Scalars, Foliations, Bounds on the Configuration Space Variables and the Positivity of the Quasi-Local Mass

Abstract

We examine the constraints of spherically symmetric general relativity with one asymptotically flat region, exploiting both the traditional metric variables and variables constructed from the optical scalars. With respect to the latter variables, there exist two linear combinations of the Hamiltonian and momentum constraints which are related by time reversal. We introduce a one-parameter family of linear extrinsic time foliations of spacetime. The values of the parameter yielding globally valid gauges correspond to the vanishing of a timelike vector in the superspace of spherically symmetric geometries. We define a quasi-local mass on spheres of fixed proper radius which we prove is positive when the constraints are satisfied. Underpinning the proof are various local bounds on the configuration variables. We prove that a reasonable definition of the gravitational binding energy is always negative. Finally, we provide a tentative characterization of the configuration space of the theory in terms of closed bounded trajectories on the parameter space of the optical scalars.

Static Spherically Symmetric Solutions in Nonconservative Unimodular Gravity

The traceless field equations of unimodular gravity determine the source of a given geometry only up to a pure-trace contribution. We study the consequences of this reconstruction freedom for a static, spherically symmetric black-hole geometry containing the leading inverse-cubic deformation of Schwarzschild not fixed by weak-field data. We show that among the standard combinations entering the energy conditions, only the two null projections are independent of the reconstruction, whereas the energy density and the strong and dominant combinations depend on the chosen split between matter and vacuum. This yields a general criterion: conclusions based on the null energy condition are reconstruction invariant, while those based only on the strong or dominant conditions are not. Applied to wormhole throats, this criterion reproduces the null-energy no-go result for every split. For the black-hole family, the inverse-cubic parameter carries the complete trace sector. Within the Rastall restriction of the reconstruction family, nonconservation is controlled by the product of this parameter with the Rastall coupling, and the traceless split is selected by the energy conditions. We also derive strong-field observables and identify a charge-independent combination of photon-sphere and innermost-stable-orbit shifts that isolates the trace-sector parameter, while current observational precision remains insufficient to measure it.

Effective Matter Conversion in Gravitational Collapse and the Dynamical Formation of Regular Black Holes

We study inverse source reconstruction in generalized Vaidya spacetimes. A prescribed density fixes the mass and tangential pressure, while a two-sector decomposition determines a dimensionless radial balance function. We distinguish this function from a time-directed conversion rate and identify the additional null-flux information required for a covariant exchange vector. Positivity restricts the allowed target pressures: a de Sitter core cannot be represented by nonnegative sectors with nonnegative tangential equations of state. An explicit finite-density profile admits a positive vacuum-like completion, finite curvature invariants, and inner and outer trapping horizons above a calculable threshold. Its total source satisfies the null, weak, and dominant energy conditions during monotonic accretion, while the timelike convergence condition fails in the core. We check polytropic, bag-model-inspired, and condensate-inspired profiles and the corresponding cosmological reconstruction. Finally, we compute the stationary endpoint's shadow and compare its exterior deformation with published Sagittarius A* measurements. The construction establishes local curvature regularity and marginal-sphere formation, without claiming a microscopic formation mechanism, perturbative stability, or geodesic completeness.

Nonequilibrium Apparent-Horizon Thermodynamics in Effective Loop Quantum Cosmology

In this work, we investigate the thermodynamic consistency of the apparent horizon in effective loop quantum cosmology (LQC). By retaining the standard definitions of horizon thermodynamic quantities, we find that the modified LQC dynamics leads to a departure from the classical equilibrium thermodynamic description. This deviation can be naturally described by a nonequilibrium formulation characterized by an internal entropy production term. The resulting entropy production consistently recovers the classical and de Sitter limits. These results suggest that the apparent horizon in effective LQC admits a coherent nonequilibrium thermodynamic interpretation.
