Disorder Parameter of Confinement

Abstract

The disorder parameter of confinement-deconfinement phase transition based on the monopole action determined previously in $SU(2)$ QCD are investigated. We construct an operator which corresponds to the order parameter defined in the abelian Higgs model. The operator shows proper behaviors as the disorder parameter in the numerical simulations of finite temperature QCD.

Stochastic Path Sampler For Lattice Field Theory

In lattice field theory, target distributions are known only up to normalization, (\tildeπ(ϕ)\propto e^{-S(ϕ)}), while the partition function is intractable. Markov chain Monte Carlo simulations often become inefficient near phase transitions or the continuum limit due to critical slowing down. In this work, we propose a novel sampler based on nonequilibrium thermodynamics, called Stochastic Path Sampler (SPS), which can generate configurations for the unnormalized target distribution without requiring training data. The central idea of SPS is to establish a trajectory-level balance for learnable forward and backward stochastic dynamics between two equilibrium states, namely the prior and target distributions. This is achieved by minimizing the path-space variational free energy, equivalently an entropy-production upper bound, defined by the log-ratio of forward and auxiliary backward trajectory measures, thereby enhancing the reversibility of the forward and backward processes. The learned forward process provides independent proposals, which are subsequently corrected by an extended-space Independence Metropolis--Hastings step. In two-dimensional (ϕ^4) theory, we demonstrate that our neural sampler can achieve the same sampling quality as HMC but with a much shorter autocorrelation time in the critical region. This sampler offers a stochastic-quantization-inspired route to data-free proposal construction for lattice field theory by leveraging a variational free-energy principle derived from path-space irreversibility.

Evidence of Taste-Symmetry restoration for Kähler-Dirac fermions on Euclidean Dynamical Triangulations

We study the spectrum of two-particle bound states of Kähler-Dirac fermions coupled via gravity in Euclidean Dynamical Triangulations (EDT). We work in the quenched approximation, where the geometry is allowed to fluctuate, but there is no back-reaction from the matter on the geometry. The Kähler-Dirac action respects an exact $U(1)$ symmetry that is related to continuum chiral symmetry, and this $U(1)$ symmetry ensures that some of the bound-state masses vanish in the chiral limit of vanishing fermion bare mass. The bound-state masses that are not protected by the $U(1)$ symmetry do not vanish in the chiral limit, but the scale associated with the symmetry breaking does not appear to be a physical scale like the Planck mass or the curvature scale of the emergent de Sitter background. Rather, the mass scale associated with this non-degeneracy appears to be a positive power of the lattice spacing, decreasing as the continuum limit is approached. This suggests that Kähler-Dirac fermions in EDT can be interpreted as the gravity analog of staggered fermions in flat-space lattice field theories, with similar behavior.

Nucleon Parton Distribution Functions from Boosted Correlations in the Coulomb gauge

Recently, a novel approach has been proposed to compute parton distributions through the use of boosted correlators fixed in the Coulomb gauge from lattice QCD, within the framework of Large-Momentum Effective Theory (LaMET). This approach circumvents the need for Wilson lines, potentially enhancing the efficiency and accuracy of lattice calculations. In this work, we present the first exploratory implementation of the Coulomb gauge method for calculating nucleon unpolarized, helicity, and transversity parton distribution functions (PDFs). The calculations are performed on a Highly-Improved-Staggered-Quark ensemble with lattice spacing $a = 0.06$ fm, volume $L_s^3 \times L_t=48^3\times 64$, and valence pion mass $m_π=300$ MeV, employing boosted nucleon states with momenta up to 3.04 GeV. Our lattice predictions for the valence-quark PDFs -- extracted from the real part of the correlators -- show good convergence with increasing nucleon momentum and are compatible with the most recent global analyses for all spin structures. On the other hand, the full-quark-channel PDFs obtained from the imaginary part of the correlators exhibit discrepancies between the two large nucleon momenta considered, although the results at the higher momentum are consistent with phenomenology. The discrepancies are likely driven by stronger excited-state contamination in the imaginary matrix elements, which is consistent with the observation in the literature. Overall, this work demonstrates the efficacy of the Coulomb gauge approach for nucleon PDFs and serves as a benchmark for its broader applications.
