D-Branes at Singularities : A Bottom-Up Approach to the String Embedding of the Standard Model

Abstract

We propose a bottom-up approach to the building of particle physics models from string theory. Our building blocks are Type II D-branes which we combine appropriately to reproduce desirable features of a particle theory model: 1) Chirality ; 2) Standard Model group ; 3) N=1 or N=0 supersymmetry ; 4) Three quark-lepton generations. We start such a program by studying configurations of D=10, Type IIB D3-branes located at singularities. We study in detail the case of Z_N, N=1,0 orbifold singularities leading to the SM group or some left-right symmetricextension. In general, tadpole cancellation conditions require the presence of additional branes, e.g. D7-branes. For the N=1 supersymmetric case the unique twist leading to three quark-lepton generations is Z_3, predicting $\sin^2θ_W=3/14=0.21$. The models obtained are the simplest semirealistic string models ever built. In the non-supersymmetric case there is a three-generation model for each Z_N, N>4, but the Weinberg angle is in general too small. One can obtain a large class of D=4 compact models by considering the above structure embedded into a Calabi Yau compactification. We explicitly construct examples of such compact models using Z_3 toroidal orbifolds and orientifolds, and discuss their properties. In these examples, global cancellation of RR charge may be achieved by adding anti-branes stuck at the fixed points, leading to models with hidden sector gravity-induced supersymmetry breaking. More general frameworks, like F-theory compactifications, allow completely $\NN=1$ supersymmetric embeddings of our local structures, as we show in an explicit example.

Four-Fermion Deformations on Line Defects in QED$_4$ with Yukawas

We elucidate the dynamics induced by a Wilson Line of charge $q$ and electron charge $e$ in $QED_4$ coupled to a real scalar via Yukawa interactions. We observe that there is a range of the fixed product $e^2 q$ with $e\rightarrow 0$ and $q\rightarrow \infty$ for which four-fermion operators play a dominant role for the dynamics of the theory. We uncover the fixed-point dynamics of the theory and analyze their critical behavior.

The Baby Universe is Fine and the CFT Knows It: On Holography for Closed Universes

Big bang/big crunch closed universes can be realized in AdS/CFT, even though they lack asymptotically AdS boundaries. With enough bulk entanglement, the bulk Hilbert space of a closed universe can be holographically encoded in the CFT. We clarify the relation of this encoding to observer-clone proposals and refute recent arguments about the breakdown of semiclassical physics in such spaces. In the limit of no bulk entanglement, the holographic encoding breaks down. The oft-cited one-dimensional nature of the closed universe Hilbert space represents the limitation of the external (CFT) Hilbert space to access the quantum information in the closed universe, similar to the limitations imposed on observers outside a perfectly isolated quantum lab. We advocate that the CFT nevertheless continues to determine the physical properties of the closed universe in this regime, showing how to interpret this relationship in terms of a final state projection in the closed universe. We provide a dictionary between the final state wavefunction and CFT data. We propose a model of the emergence of an arrow of time in the universe with a given initial or final state projection. Finally, we show that the conventional EFT in the closed universe, without any projection, can be recovered as a maximally ignorant description of the final state. This conventional EFT is encoded in CFT data, and it can be probed by computing coarse-grained observables. We provide an example of one such observable. Taken together, these results amount to a clean bill of health for baby universes born of AdS/CFT.

Towards a Carrollian Description of Yang-Mills

We provide a theory defined purely on null infinity that describes Yang-Mills in the Minkowski space bulk. The dynamical field of our model is the characteristic data of the bulk gauge field, and the action combines an electric branch Carrollian kinetic term with non-local interactions of MHV type that link different points on the celestial sphere. We explicitly show how this theory recovers all MHV and NMHV tree amplitudes in Yang-Mills, and outline how arbitrary tree amplitudes may be obtained from its Feynman diagram expansion. The detailed expression we find for the NMHV amplitude appears to be new.
