Supergravity solutions for D-branes in Hpp-wave backgrounds

Abstract

We derive two families of supergravity solutions describing D-branes in the maximally supersymmetric Hpp-wave background. The first family of solutions corresponds to quarter-BPS D-branes. These solutions are delocalised along certain directions transverse to the pp-wave. The second family corresponds to the non-supersymmetric D-branes. These solutions are fully localised. A peculiar feature of the nonsupersymmetric solutions is that gravity becomes repulsive close to the core of the D-brane. Both families preserve the amount of supersymmetry predicted by the D-brane probe/CFT analysis. All solutions are written in Brinkman coordinates. To construct these kind of solutions it is crucial to identify the coordinates in which the ansatz looks the simplest. We argue that the natural coordinates to get the supergravity description of the half-BPS branes are the Rosen coordinates.

A mini-course on Generalized Symmetries and a relation to Cobordisms and K-theory

This mini-course, conducted at the XI School on Geometric, Algebraic, and Topological Methods in Quantum Field Theory held in Villa de Leyva, Colombia, provides an overview of the interconnection between generalized symmetries and cohomology. It is designed for advanced undergraduate students with a background in physics or mathematics. Additionally, we describe a method for connecting generalized symmetries with cobordisms and K-theory within the framework of string theory. We assume basic knowledge in quantum field theory and differential forms.

Gravitational dressing: from the crossed product to more general algebraic and mathematical structure

The crossed product, and consequent transition from von Neumann algebras of type III to II, is recovered from a truncation of more general gravitational dressing constructions, about certain spacetimes. This is done by extending "standard dressing" constructions previously used to give a perturbative definition of "gravitational splittings," defining approximate localization of information. This result appears to illustrate that this algebraic transition is a small piece of a more general algebraic, or other mathematical, structure associated with quantum gravity. The leading-order structure involves noncommutativity from separated regions, and at the nonperturbative level connects with a possible explanation of holographic behavior for gravity.

Lattice Realizations of Flat Gauging and T-duality Defects at Any Radius

We analyze non-invertible topological interfaces and defects in the two-dimensional compact boson, focusing on the more exotic ones obtained by gauging continuous symmetries with flat connections on a half-space. These include interfaces between mutually irrational radii and T-duality symmetries at arbitrary boson radius. Using the modified Villain discretization on both a Euclidean two-dimensional square lattice and a quantum one-dimensional chain, we show that all these topological interfaces survive discretization and give rise to non-compact edge modes localized at the defect sites. Such non-compact edge modes imply a continuous defect spectrum and an infinite quantum dimension. In the special case of rational radii, we show how the defect action or Hamiltonian can be modified in order to compactify the edge modes and produce more standard defects with finite quantum dimension.
