Classical gauge instantons from open strings

Abstract

We study the D3/D(-1) brane system and show how to compute instanton corrections to correlation functions of gauge theories in four dimensions using open string techniques. In particular we show that the disks with mixed boundary conditions that are typical of the D3/D(-1) system are the sources for the classical instanton solution. This can then be recovered from simple calculations of open string scattering amplitudes in the presence of D-instantons. Exploiting this fact we also relate this stringy description to the standard instanton calculus of field theory.

Holographic RG Flows from Running Couplings

We investigate the RG flow in the holographic setup and study new IR physics at the IR fixed point, when a relevant scalar operator deforms a two-dimensional conformal field theory (CFT). On the dual gravity side, the renormalization group (RG) flow from the UV to the IR CFT can be described by a scalar field rolling from an unstable to a stable equilibrium point. Specifically, to make the scale dependence of the RG flow more explicit, we study the running coupling constant obtained by solving the beta function. After considering a simple scalar potential, we study the change of the coupling constant and its effect on the ground state along the RG flow. We showed that the central charge monotonically decreases along the RG flow, and its value at the IR fixed point is determined by the conformal dimension of the deformation operator and the coupling constant at the IR fixed point. We further investigate how changing the ground state influences the two-point function and conformal dimension of a local operator in the probe limit.

Reflected constraint algebras of open Carroll--Weyl null strings

We study whether open null strings admit the full Carroll--Weyl gauge symmetry consistently with endpoint conditions and nontrivial physical degrees of freedom. For endpoints constrained to timelike defects, natural variations imply that any nonzero Carroll flow must be tangent to the worldsheet boundary. For a fixed linear defect through the target origin, we construct a differentiable Hamiltonian system on this branch. Its complete Carroll--Weyl generator requires no additional boundary charge. Smooth reflection defines a preserved subdomain and gives a circle interpretation to selected sine and cosine modes of the constraints. Their centreless algebra extends the two-constraint open-string algebra by the local scale constraint. An endpoint obstruction shows that this reflection condition excludes some gauge orbits of the natural interval theory: we exhibit a regular four-dimensional solution with no corresponding reflected representative. Within the reflected sector, we construct a local canonical field pair and conserved target-space Lorentz charges. A separate solution family has nonzero boost charge and a nondegenerate two-dimensional symplectic pullback. The constraint algebra, the boundary choice, and the physical observables thus provide complementary information about the open theory.

Thermal Festina Lente

According to the Festina Lente bound, particles charged under a $U(1)$ gauge field cannot be too light. Otherwise, the largest charged black holes of de Sitter space would discharge in a way that leads to a crunching singularity in violation of cosmic censorship. The Festina Lente bound has previously been extended to also include a background of thermal radiation, but where vacuum energy still dominates cosmic evolution, which imposes a maximal temperature $T\leq T_{\max}=(cV/σ)^{1/4}$. We extend this analysis by accounting for thermal enhancement of the discharge process and making the analysis more quantitative. The result is a bound $m\gtrsim\ell (cV/σ)^{1/4}$ on the masses of charged particles. Here, $\ell$ is a term that depends logarithmically on the gauge coupling and particle charge. At weak coupling this leads to a significantly stronger constraint than the $\sqrt{gq}$ scaling of the original Festina Lente bound. As a result, the present vacuum energy requires every particle of charge $10^{-26}\lesssim gq\lesssim e$ to be heavier than $0.03$--$0.2$ eV, provided its gauge boson is lighter than the Hubble scale. An unbroken gauged $B-L$ with Dirac neutrinos gives $m_{ν,{\rm lightest}}\gtrsim10$--$43$ meV for $10^{-29}\lesssim g_{B-L}\lesssim10^{-24}$, in tension with the DESI DR2 limit once $g_{B-L}\gtrsim7\times10^{-28}$. The same limit bounds a neutrino millicharge to $ε_ν\lesssim2\times10^{-27}$. We also revisit the Standard Model effective field theory constraints from the electroweak phase transition. During slow-roll inflation the Standard Model electron violates the bound over the whole range of Hubble rates allowed by the CMB tensor limit and by nucleosynthesis, unless the photon is Higgsed, its coupling is suppressed, or one considers very fine-tuned versions of Higgs inflation.
