The R-map and the Coupling of N=2 Tensor Multiplets in 5 and 4 Dimensions

Abstract

We study the dimensional reduction of five dimensional N=2 Yang-Mills-Einstein supergravity theories (YMESGT) coupled to tensor multiplets. The resulting 4D theories involve first order interactions among tensor and vector fields with mass terms. If the 5D gauge group, K, does not mix the 5D tensor and vector fields, the 4D tensor fields can be integrated out in favor of 4D vector fields and the resulting theory is dual to a standard 4D YMESGT. The gauge group has a block diagonal symplectic embedding and is a semi-direct product of the 5D gauge group K with a Heisenberg group of dimension (2P+1), where 2P is the number of tensor fields in five dimensions. There exists an infinite family of theories, thus obtained, whose gauge groups are pp-wave contractions of the simple noncompact groups of type SO*(2M). If, on the other hand, the 5D gauge group does mix the 5D tensor and vector fields, the resulting 4D theory is dual to a 4D YMESGT whose gauge group does, in general,NOT have a block diagonal symplectic embedding and involves additional topological terms. The scalar potentials of the dimensionally reduced theories naturally have some of the ingredients that were found necessary for stable de Sitter ground states. We comment on the relation between the known 5D and 4D, N=2 supergravities with stable de Sitter ground states.

A mini-course on Generalized Symmetries and a relation to Cobordisms and K-theory

This mini-course, conducted at the XI School on Geometric, Algebraic, and Topological Methods in Quantum Field Theory held in Villa de Leyva, Colombia, provides an overview of the interconnection between generalized symmetries and cohomology. It is designed for advanced undergraduate students with a background in physics or mathematics. Additionally, we describe a method for connecting generalized symmetries with cobordisms and K-theory within the framework of string theory. We assume basic knowledge in quantum field theory and differential forms.

Gravitational dressing: from the crossed product to more general algebraic and mathematical structure

The crossed product, and consequent transition from von Neumann algebras of type III to II, is recovered from a truncation of more general gravitational dressing constructions, about certain spacetimes. This is done by extending "standard dressing" constructions previously used to give a perturbative definition of "gravitational splittings," defining approximate localization of information. This result appears to illustrate that this algebraic transition is a small piece of a more general algebraic, or other mathematical, structure associated with quantum gravity. The leading-order structure involves noncommutativity from separated regions, and at the nonperturbative level connects with a possible explanation of holographic behavior for gravity.

Wavefunctions of AdS$_3$ Universes and $T\bar{T}$-deformed Torus Partition Functions

We study wavefunctions of quantum gravity in asymptotically AdS$_3$ spacetimes and their relation to $T\bar{T}$-deformed torus partition functions. We show that the deformed partition function is given by an invertible integral transform of bulk wavefunctions, which implements a change of representation from the York time to its conjugate, the spatial volume. The invertibility of the transform allows the bulk wavefunction to be reconstructed from the family of $T\bar{T}$-deformed partition functions. A $T\bar{T}$-deformed partition function at fixed coupling is the amplitude of the bulk state in a finite-width, fixed-volume wavepacket localized at the asymptotic boundary in York time. In the CFT limit, the wavepacket localizes at the boundary, recovering the standard holographic relation. The holographic screen of a given state is the support of the integrand of the transform: at large central charge, it separates from the wavepacket and reproduces finite-cutoff holography for the sign of the coupling with complex energies, and glue-on holography for the opposite sign. In Euclidean signature, the construction arises naturally from wavefunctions of Rindler AdS$_3$, while after a double Wick rotation it admits a Lorentzian interpretation in terms of closed AdS$_3$ torus universes without asymptotic boundaries. We also discuss de Sitter torus universes and generalizations to other spatial topologies and higher dimensions.
