BRST Quantization of a Particle in AdS_5

Abstract

We perform the quantization of a massive particle propagating on AdS_5. We use the twistor formulation in which the action can be brought into a quadratic form. We construct the BRST operator which commutes with AdS_5 isometries forming SU(2,2). The condition of a consistent BRST quantization requires that the AdS energy E is quantized in units of the AdS_5 radius R, E=\frac{1}{2R}(N_a +N_b+4), with N_a, N_b being some non-negative integers. We also argue that the mass operator will be identified with the moduli of the U(1) central extension Z of the SU(2,2|4) algebra in the supersymmetric case. The spectrum of physical states with vanishing ghost number contains a particular subset of `massless' SU(2,2) multiplets (including the bosonic part of the `novel short' supermultiplets). We hope that our results will help to quantize also the string on AdS_5.

Who Writes the Gravitational Second Law of Thermodynamics?

We define gravitational entropy as the manifestly integrable surface charge associated with local transverse Lorentz boosts, entirely bypassing the conventional reliance on spacetime diffeomorphisms. Any notion of entropy must satisfy the second law. To answer the question posed in the title, an analogy with Newtonian classical mechanics is instructive: Newton's second law of motion is written by inertial observers who are defined by the first law of mechanics. We show that the second law of gravitational thermodynamics is written by free-fall observers with path parameterization in which the non-affinity of the geodesics is equal to the expansion of their velocity vector field. We then provide a proof of the local second law by studying variations in entropy as viewed by this class of covariantly-defined causal free-fall observers. We show that the entropy variation is strictly non-decreasing, provided the matter sector satisfies the integrated strong energy condition along the observer path.

Learning Scattering Amplitudes with Transformer Reinforcement Learning

We introduce a transformer reinforcement learning algorithm that learns to solve high loop-level scattering amplitudes in planar N = 4 Super Yang-Mills theory. Our algorithm improves on previous transformer-only results by incorporating previously derived symmetries and relationships into the learning algorithm. This results in a greatly decreased fraction of the solution that needs to be known a priori to solve the entire problem. An additional benefit is that our algorithm also ensures that every output obeys the set of known relationships. Rather than predicting all coefficients independently, the model proposes assignments that are propagated through exact linear relations, while MCTS searches over assignments when propagation alone is insufficient. This is crucial to the generalization of machine learning approaches to higher loops, as without this, there is no way to overcome the factorially scaling of state sizes and compare to results derived via other methods. Using the symbology representation of the form factor, we frame the problem as learning a mapping between discrete sequences and integer coefficients.

Wilsonian exact renormalization group flow in the gauged Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model

We study the Wilsonian exact renormalization group flow of the gauged Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model, a four-dimensional $U(1)$ gauge theory with chirally invariant four-Fermi interactions, by using the gradient flow exact renormalization group~(GFERG). Our gauge-invariant ansatz (truncation) for the 1PI Wilson action keeps a general photon kinetic function~$\mathcal{K}_τ(k^2)$, the fermion mass, and the scalar and vector four-Fermi couplings. For a fixed gauge coupling~$e^2$, the Gaussian and NJL (quasi-)fixed points on the critical surface merge at~$e_c^2\simeq17$, as anticipated by the ladder Schwinger--Dyson equation and the conventional Wilsonian renormalization group. We then let $e^2$ itself flow. Owing to the manifest gauge invariance of the GFERG, the flow of~$e^2$ is governed solely by the photon anomalous dimension~$γ_A$, which remains positive along both branches up to the merging point. Hence, no fixed point with~$e^2\neq0$ exists. Flows from a sufficiently large~$e^2$ in the ultraviolet (UV) reach the chirally broken phase even for vanishing four-Fermi couplings, so the gauge interaction does trigger chiral symmetry breaking. The merging point, however, is not a fixed point, and the gauge coupling vanishes in any continuum limit within our truncation.
