The isomorphism conjecture for 3-manifold groups and K-theory of virtually poly-surface groups

Abstract

This article has two purposes. In \cite{R3} (math.KT/0405211) we showed that the FIC (Fibered Isomorphism Conjecture for pseudoisotopy functor) for a particular class of 3-manifolds (we denoted this class by \cal C) is the key to prove the FIC for 3-manifold groups in general. And we proved the FIC for the fundamental groups of members of a subclass of \cal C. This result was obtained by showing that the double of any member of this subclass is either Seifert fibered or supports a nonpositively curved metric. In this article we prove that for any M in {\cal C} there is a closed 3-manifold P such that either P is Seifert fibered or is a nonpositively curved 3-manifold and π_1(M) is a subgroup of π_1(P). As a consequence this proves that the FIC is true for any B-group (see definition 3.2 in \cite{R3}). Therefore, the FIC is true for any Haken 3-manifold group and hence for any 3-manifold group (using the reduction theorem of \cite{R3}) provided we assume the Geometrization conjecture. The above result also proves the FIC for a class of 4-manifold groups (see \cite{R2}(math.GT/0209119)). The second aspect of this article is to relax a condition in the definition of strongly poly-surface group (\cite{R1} (math.GT/0209118)) and define a new class of groups (we call them {\it weak strongly poly-surface} groups). Then using the above result we prove the FIC for any virtually weak strongly poly-surface group. We also give a corrected proof of the main lemma of \cite{R1}.

A groupoid approach to the equivariant coarse Baum--Connes conjecture

In this paper, we develop a groupoid approach to the equivariant coarse Baum--Connes conjecture. For a bounded geometry metric space $X$ equipped with a proper, free, and isometric action of a countable discrete group $Γ$, we introduce the equivariant coarse groupoid $G(X, Γ)$. We prove that the groupoid Baum--Connes conjecture for $G(X, Γ)$ with coefficients in $\ell^{\infty}(X,\K)^\Ga$ is equivalent to the equivariant coarse Baum--Connes conjecture for $(X, Γ)$ using a localization algebra description of groupoid equivariant $KK$-theory on the Rips complex models. As applications of this framework, we prove that if the space $X$ admits a coarse embedding into Hilbert space (which is not required to be $Γ$-equivariant), then the equivariant coarse Novikov conjecture holds for $(X, Γ)$, i.e., the assembly map $μ_{X,\Ga}$ is an injection. We also obtain a new proof of the equivariant coarse Baum--Connes conjecture if $X$ admits an equivariant coarse embedding into Hilbert space.

Analytic Kasparov product for non-separable C$^*$-algebras

We develop an analytic framework for the explicit construction of Kasparov products on uncountably generated Hilbert modules over non-separable C$^*$-algebras by extending the classical Kasparov bimodule picture. In particular, this yields a well-defined functor from the category of general C$^*$-algebras whose restriction to separable C$^*$-algebras coincides with classical KK-theory and which satisfies several properties expected of non-separable KK-theory. A key idea of the extension is to replace a single Fredholm operator on a Kasparov bimodule with a net and to encode the directed system of separable C$^*$-subalgebras. We also introduce the notion of freely complementable Hilbert modules and develop cropping techniques to extend Kasparov's technical theorem beyond the countably generated setting. It naturally gives rise to a sufficiently broad class of C$^*$-algebras that provides a non-commutative analogue of paracompactness and includes all $σ$-unital algebras.

Discretisation in algebraic $K$-theory of independent ample groupoids and their Steinberg algebras

An independent ample groupoid $G$ comes equipped with a discrete groupoid $G_d$ and a proper étale correspondence $Ω:G_d\to G$. Discretisation with respect to a homological invariant $\mathcal{H}$ holds when $\mathcal{H}(Ω)$ is an equivalence. We show for example that discretisation with respect to the $K$-theory spectrum $\mathbb{K} \mathfrak{B}_G$ of the permutative category of bisections always holds, establish excision and continuity for this invariant, and use all this and explicit resolutions by independent groupoids to compute it for several families of ample groupoids. We also prove discretisation with respect to invariants of the Steinberg algebra $\ell[G]$ such as (homotopy) algebraic $K$-theory in several particular cases, and carry out computations.
