Projective spaces of a C*-algebra

Abstract

Based on the projective matrix spaces studied by B. Schwarz and A. Zaks, we study the notion of projective space associated to a C*-algebra A with a fixed projection p. The resulting space P(p) admits a rich geometrical structure as a holomorphic manifold and a homogeneous reductive space of the invertible group of A. Moreover, several metrics (chordal, spherical, pseudo-chordal, non-Euclidean - in Schwarz-Zaks terminology) are considered, allowing a comparison among P(p), the Grassmann manifold of A and the space of positive elements which are unitary with respect to the bilinear form induced by the reflection e = 2p-1. Among several metrical results, we prove that geodesics are unique and of minimal length when measured with the spherical and non-Euclidean metrics.

Property (T) group factors whose Jones index set equals all positive integers

Using a mélange of techniques at the rich intersection of deformation/rigidity theory, finite index subfactor theory, and geometric group theory, we prove the existence of a continuum of property (T) factors that are pairwise non-stably isomorphic and whose Jones index sets consist of all positive integers. These factors are realized as group von Neumann algebras $\mathcal{L}(G)$ associated with property (T) generalized wreath-like product groups $G \in \mathscr{WR}(A, B \curvearrowright I)$ introduced in [CIOS23b], where $A$ is abelian, $B$ is a non-parabolic subgroup of a relatively hyperbolic group with residually finite peripheral structure, and $B \curvearrowright I$ is a faithful action with infinite orbits. Integer index subfactors of $\mathcal{L}(G)$ are constructed from extensions of $G$. This result advances an open question of P. de la Harpe [dlH95].

Algebraic topology of $C^*$-algebras

Any $C^*$-algebra can be regarded as a generalization of locally compact, Hausdorff topological space $\mathcal X$. From the commutative Gelfand-Na\uımark theorem it follows that the spectrum of any commutative $C^*$-algebra is a locally compact, Hausdorff space which have the exact information about the $C^*$-algebra. Here we consider a Gelfand spaces of $C^*$-algebras which can be regarded as a generalization of the spectrum. In case of commutative $C^*$-algebras the Gelfand space coincides with the spectrum. Generally Gelfand spaces are not Hausdorff and provide more detailed information of noncommutative $C^*$-algebras. Usage of Gelfand spaces of $C^*$-algebra enables us to define some $C^*$-algebraic analogs of several notions of the classical algebraic topology, e.g. fundamental group, cohomology, multiplicative structure of $K$-theory and Adams operations. Application of the Gelfand spaces yields a generalization of Dixmier-Douady theory. Also Gelfand space provides interoperability between topological invariants and quantum logic.

UCP Maps on Finite Toeplitz Systems

We study unital completely positive (UCP) maps on the finite Toeplitz operator system $\mathcal T_d$ of $d \times d$ Toeplitz matrices. We give an explicit characterization of pure UCP maps on $\mathcal T_d$ taking values in $M_n$ in terms of positive $n\times n$ matrix-valued trigonometric polynomials of degree at most $d-1$. This characterization yields a checkable criterion for deciding whether a given UCP map is pure. As an application, we prove that every pure UCP map on $\mathcal T_d$ has a unique completely positive extension to the generated $C^*$-algebra.
