Noncommutative geometry and its relation to stochastic calculus and symplectic mechanics

Abstract

In the context of a noncommutative differential calculus on the algebra of real valued functions of an $n$-dimensional manifold $M$, a commutative and associative product of 1-forms is naturally defined. Ordinary differential calculus corresponds to this product being trivially zero. We consider the minimal generalization in which the algebra of 1-forms with this product is nilpotent of degree 3. Basic tensor analysis and differential geometry are developped in this context and applied to the formulation of symplectic geometry and Hamiltonian dynamics. It is shown that the corresponding Liouville equation can take the form of a generalized Fokker-Planck equation, well known in statistical mechanics of open systems, as well as in stochastic calculus. Specifically it may be the same with that obtained via Ito stochastic calculus, when solving a linear stochastic differential equation with a Wiener process as the stochastic term. The close connection between noncommutative differential structures of this kind, with semimartingale stochastic processes on manifolds thus suggested, is further explored.

On the parametrization of solutions of the Yang--Baxter equations

We study all five-, six-, and one eight-vertex type two-state solutions of the Yang-Baxter equations in the form $A_{12} B_{13} C_{23} = C_{23} B_{13} A_{12}$, and analyze the interplay of the `gauge' and `inversion' symmetries of these solution. Starting with algebraic solutions, whose parameters have no specific interpretation, and then using these symmetries we can construct a parametrization where we can identify global, color and spectral parameters. We show in particular how the distribution of these parameters may be changed by a change of gauge.

Higher-Dimensional Algebra I: Braided Monoidal 2-Categories

We begin with a brief sketch of what is known and conjectured concerning braided monoidal 2-categories and their applications to 4d topological quantum field theories and 2-tangles (surfaces embedded in 4-dimensional space). Then we give concise definitions of semistrict monoidal 2-categories and braided monoidal 2-categories, and show how these may be unpacked to give long explicit definitions similar to, but not quite the same as, those given by Kapranov and Voevodsky. Finally, we describe how to construct a semistrict braided monoidal 2-category Z(C) as the `center' of a semistrict monoidal category C. This is analogous to the construction of a braided monoidal category as the center, or `quantum double', of a monoidal category. As a corollary, our construction yields a strictification theorem for braided monoidal 2-categories.

Idempotents of Hecke algebras of type A

We use a skein-theoretic version of the Hecke algebras of type A to present three-dimensional diagrammatic views of Gyoja's idempotent elements, based closely on the corresponding Young diagram. In this context we give straightforward calculations for the eigenvalues of two natural central elements in the Hecke algebras, namely the full curl and the sum of the Murphy operators. We discuss their calculation also in terms of the framing factor associated to the appropriate irreducible representation of the quantum group SU(N,q).
