Renormalization of the Standard Model effective field theory to dimension eight

The Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT) provides a powerful, model-independent framework to explore deviations from the Standard Model (SM) by parametrising potential new physics through higher-dimensional operators. This thesis investigates the renormalisation structure of SMEFT, focusing on dimension-eight operators, which are increasingly relevant in precision analyses and in models where dimension-six effects are suppressed. We review renormalisation in quantum field theory, emphasising dimensional regularisation and the $\overline{\text{MS}}$ scheme, and outline the conceptual foundations of EFTs. One of the central results of this work is the systematic construction and classification of bosonic operators in SMEFT at dimension eight, employing Group Theory techniques and removing redundancies by working in momentum space. Building on this operator basis, we compute the complete one-loop renormalisation group equations (RGEs) involving insertions of dimension-eight-or-lower operators. This includes pure dimension-eight effects, pairs of dimension-six operators and lepton-number-violating sectors. Our calculations use an off-shell Green's function basis and leverage algebraic simplifications derived from symmetry and gauge invariance. These results are applied to positivity bounds and oblique parameters, providing essential tools for consistent SMEFT analyses across energy scales. The findings extend SMEFT's theoretical reach and support its use in high-precision phenomenology.

Towards the renormalisation of the Standard Model effective field theory to dimension eight: Bosonic interactions II

We calculate the renormalisation group running of the bosonic Standard Model (SM) effective operators at one loop and to order $v^4/Λ^4$, with $v\sim 246$ GeV being the electroweak scale and $Λ$ the unknown new physics threshold. We focus on contributions driven by one dimension-eight term and SM couplings, thus extending (and completing) the effort initiated in arXiv:2106.05291, in which quantum corrections from pairs of dimension-six interactions were considered. We highlight some interesting consequences, including the renormalisation of loop-induced interactions by tree-level generated terms and, more importantly, the validity of positivity bounds on different operators inducing anomalous gauge quartic couplings.

Renormalisation of SMEFT bosonic interactions up to dimension eight by LNV operators

We present the renormalisation group running of the bosonic operators of the Standard Model effective field theory by the Lepton Number Violating operators (LNVs) at 1-loop order up to $\mathcal{O}(v^4/Λ^4)$, with $v \sim 246$ GeV as the electroweak scale and $Λ$ as the SMEFT cut-off. Using these relations with the positivity bounds on Wilson coefficients of $ϕ^4 D^4$ class, we derive sign-constraints on the Wilson coefficients of LNV operators for models where $ϕ^4 D^4$ operators do not appear at tree-level. We inspect these constraints for the LNV Wilson coefficients generated from matching the Type-I and III seesaw models to SMEFT up to dimension seven at tree-level. We also exhibit the unique bounds induced by the T-parameter on LNVs.

Theoretical developments in the SMEFT at dimension-8 and beyond

In this contribution to the Snowmass 2021 process we review theoretical developments in the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT) with a focus on effects at the dimension-8 level and beyond. We review the theoretical advances that led to the complete construction of the operator bases for the dimension-8 and dimension-9 SMEFT Lagrangians. We discuss the possibility of obtaining all-orders results in the $1/Λ$ expansion for certain SMEFT observables as well as the current status of renormalization group running and implications for positivity, and briefly present the on-shell approach to constructing SMEFT amplitudes. Finally we present several new phenomenological effects that first arise at dimension-8 and discuss the impact of these terms on experimental analyses.

A Green's basis for the bosonic SMEFT to dimension 8

We present a basis of dimension-eight Green's functions involving Standard Model (SM) bosonic fields, consisting of 86 new operators. Rather than using algebraic identities and integration by parts, we prove the independence of these interactions in momentum space, including a discussion on evanescent bosonic operators. Our results pave the way for renormalising the SM effective field theory (SMEFT), as well as for performing matching of ultraviolet models onto the SMEFT, to higher order. To demonstrate the potential of our construction, we have implemented our basis in matchmakereft and used it to integrate out a heavy singlet scalar and a heavy quadruplet scalar up to one loop. We provide the corresponding dimension-eight Wilson coefficients. Likewise, we show how our results can be easily used to simplify cumbersome redundant Lagrangians arising, for example, from integrating out heavy fields using the path-integral approach to matching.
