The OCR-PT-CT Project: Semi-Automatic Recognition of Ancient Egyptian Hieroglyphs Based on Metric Learning

Digital humanities are significantly transforming how Egyptologists study ancient Egyptian texts. The OCR-PT-CT project proposes a recognition method for hieroglyphs based on images of Coffin Texts (CT) from Adriaan de Buck (1935-1961) and Pyramid Texts (PT) from Middle Kingdom coffins (James Allen, 2006). The system identifies hieroglyphs and transcribes them into Gardiner's codes. A web tool organizes them by spells and witnesses, storing the data in CSV format for integration with the MORTEXVAR dataset, which collects Coffin Texts with metadata, transliterations, and translations for research. Recognition has been addressed in two ways: a Mobilenet neural network trained on 140 hieroglyph classes achieved 93.87 \% accuracy but struggled with underrepresented classes. A novel Deep Metric Learning approach improves flexibility for new or data-limited signs, achieving 97.70 \% accuracy and recognizing more hieroglyphs. Due to its superior performance under class imbalance and adaptability, the final system adopts Deep Metric Learning as the default classifier.

Using Perspective-n-Point Algorithms for a Local Positioning System Based on LEDs and a QADA Receiver

The research interest on location-based services has increased during the last years ever since 3D centimetre accuracy inside intelligent environments could be confronted with. This work proposes an indoor local positioning system based on LED lighting, transmitted from a set of beacons to a receiver. The receiver is based on a quadrant photodiode angular diversity aperture (QADA) plus an aperture placed over it.This configuration can be modelled as a perspective camera, where the image position of the transmitters can be used to recover the receiver's 3D pose. This process is known as the perspective-n-point (PnP) problem, which is well known in computer vision and photogrammetry. This work investigates the use of different state-of-the-art PnP algorithms to localize the receiver in a large space based on four co-planar transmitters and with a distance from transmitters to receiver of 3.4 m. Encoding techniques are used to permit the simultaneous emission of all the transmitted signals and their processing in the receiver. In addition, correlation techniques are used to determine the image points projected from each emitter on the QADA. This work uses Monte Carlo simulations to characterize the absolute errors for a grid of test points under noisy measurements, as well as the robustness of the system when varying the 3D location of one transmitter. The IPPE algorithm obtained the best performance in this configuration. The proposal has also been experimentally evaluated in a real setup. The estimation of the receiver's position at three points using the IPPE algorithm achieves average absolute errors of 4.33cm, 3.51cm and 28.90cm in the coordinates x, y and z, respectively. These positioning results are in line with those obtained in previous work using triangulation techniques but with the addition that the complete pose of the receiver is obtained in this proposal.

Model Guided Road Intersection Classification

Understanding complex scenarios from in-vehicle cameras is essential for safely operating autonomous driving systems in densely populated areas. Among these, intersection areas are one of the most critical as they concentrate a considerable number of traffic accidents and fatalities. Detecting and understanding the scene configuration of these usually crowded areas is then of extreme importance for both autonomous vehicles and modern ADAS aimed at preventing road crashes and increasing the safety of vulnerable road users. This work investigates inter-section classification from RGB images using well-consolidate neural network approaches along with a method to enhance the results based on the teacher/student training paradigm. An extensive experimental activity aimed at identifying the best input configuration and evaluating different network parameters on both the well-known KITTI dataset and the new KITTI-360 sequences shows that our method outperforms current state-of-the-art approaches on a per-frame basis and prove the effectiveness of the proposed learning scheme.

Nondegeneracy and the Jacobi fields of rotationally symmetric solutions to the Cahn-Hillard equation

In this paper we study rotationally symmetric solutions of the Cahn-Hilliard equation in $\mathbb R^3$ constructed by the authors. These solutions form a one parameter family analog to the family of Delaunay surfaces and in fact the zero level sets of their blowdowns approach these surfaces. Presently we go a step further and show that their stability properties are inherited from the stability properties of the Delaunay surfaces. Our main result states that the rotationally symmetric solutions are non degenerate and that they have exactly $6$ Jacobi fields of temperate growth coming from the natural invariances of the problem (3 translations and 2 rotations) and the variation of the Delaunay parameter.

Advances in the Biomedical Applications of the EELA Project

In the last years an increasing demand for Grid Infrastructures has resulted in several international collaborations. This is the case of the EELA Project, which has brought together collaborating groups of Latin America and Europe. One year ago we presented this e-infrastructure used, among others, by the Biomedical groups for the studies of oncological analysis, neglected diseases, sequence alignments and computation phylogenetics. After this period, the achieved advances are summarised in this paper.
