Rapid mixing for Gibbs measures in Riemannian manifolds

Langevin dynamics on Riemannian manifolds is analyzed. Conditions ensuring the existence of a suitable logarithmic Sobolev inequality (rapid mixing to the Gibbs measure) are identified. These conditions involve the curvature of the manifold, the inverse temperature, escaping directions from saddle points, and exclude barren plateaus and spurious local minima. We show that when these conditions are met, mixing times polynomial in the dimension of the manifold are achievable. This result is obtained through a relation between Langevin processes in the domain and in the image of a Riemannian submersion. Such a relation can be of independent interest.

Geodesic Quantum $f$-Divergences

We introduce the geodesic quantum $f$-divergences $D_f^t$, $0\leq t\leq1$, obtained from the affine-invariant geodesic between the standard and maximal relative modular operators. They reduce to the classical $f$-divergence for commuting states. The logarithmic generator yields geodesic relative entropies joining the Umegaki and Belavkin-Staszewski entropies, while the power generators yield $(t,α)$-Rényi divergences joining the Petz and geometric families. Our first main result is data processing of $D_f^t$ for every finite operator-convex generator $f$ and every $t\in[0,1]$. In particular, this gives DPI for the geodesic relative entropies and for the $(t,α)$-Rényi divergences when $0<α<1$ or $1<α\leq2$. Our second main result identifies equality in the DPI: for invertible states, every equality-determining operator-convex generator has, at each nonmaximal parameter $0\leq t<1$, exactly the Petz sufficiency class; at $t=1$, this changes to the generally larger maximal, or BS, class, which also coincides with the equality class of the divergences associated with the quadratic generator for every $t$. Our third main result is the corresponding collapse of invertible geodesic quantum Markov chains: for each of the three ordered conditional-mutual-information constructions, the $t$-quantum Markov chains are precisely the quantum Markov chains for $0\leq t<1$, whereas at $t=1$ they are the invertible BS quantum Markov chains, a class that can be strictly larger. We also determine parameter-monotonicity regimes and the intersections with the $(α,z)$ family. We prove strengthened data-processing and reconstruction estimates; we compare the three conditional orientations; we establish continuity bounds under positive lower-eigenvalue assumptions together with complementary discontinuity results; and we give a capacity-per-unit-cost interpretation.

Information Geometry of the Geodesic Quantum $f$-Divergences

We study the differential, statistical, and geometrical consequences generated by the geodesic quantum $f$-divergences introduced in [14], which are constructed by interpolating the relative modular operator and the commutant Radon-Nikodym derivative using a geodesic with parameter $t\in [0,1]$. For an invertible state $ρ$ and an operator convex function $f$, we compute the Hessian and obtain an explicit formula for the induced monotone quantum information metric $g_{ρ,t}^{(f)}$. Furthermore, we also compare these metrics with the Petz-Hasegawa metric and find the meaning of the interpolation parameter $t$ in this new geometry. We next show that the interpolation of relative modular operators $Γ_t$ in the reference purification of a state $σ$ defines a canonical finite binary experiment $(p_t,q_t)$, and introduce a log-likelihood cumulant function $Ψ_{ρ,σ}(t,s)$, recovering the Nussbaum-Szkoła distributions at $t=0$ and the Matsumoto construction at $t=1$. Finally, using Busemann functions, we endow this statistical framework with a geometric meaning in the cone of positive operators.

Static features from mixing in short- and long-range Lindbladians: Markov property and correlations

The classification of mixed-state phases requires criteria beyond two-point correlation functions, such as the decay of the mutual information (MI) and the conditional mutual information (CMI), with the latter encapsulated in the notion of Markov length. Here we show how such static properties of the fixed point of a Lindbladian follow from natural dynamical features of its generators: rapid mixing and frustration-freeness. We focus on systems with long-range interactions, and prove (i) that local Lindbladians satisfying (global) rapid mixing and frustration-freeness have fixed-points whose CMI decays with the shielding distance, and (ii) that (local) rapid mixing together with primitivity and regularity implies global decay of MI. For long-range interactions decaying with a power law with rate $α$, both quantities decay polynomially rather than exponentially, in contrast to the finite- and short-range regimes where exponential decay (a finite Markov length) is expected within a phase. We further show that Gibbs states of long-range, non-commuting Hamiltonians satisfy a local Markov property at any temperatures, extending the recent results (Chen--Rouzé, 2025) for short-range systems to the long-range regime relevant to a variety of experimental platforms. As a numerical example, we study the long-range Ising model both with and without a transverse field. We find regimes in which the polynomial decay of the CMI holds, in accordance with the bounds proven.

Efficient and simple Gibbs state preparation of the 2D toric code via duality to classical Ising chains

We introduce the notion of polynomial-depth duality transformations, which relates two sets of operator algebras through a conjugation by a poly-depth quantum circuit, and make use of this to construct efficient Gibbs samplers for a variety of interesting quantum Hamiltonians as they are poly-depth dual to classical Hamiltonians. This is for example the case for the 2D toric code, which is demonstrated to be poly-depth dual to two decoupled classical Ising spin chains for any system size, and we give evidence that such dualities hold for a wide class of stabilizer Hamiltonians. Additionally, we extend the above notion of duality to Lindbladians in order to show that mixing times and other quantities such as the spectral gap or the modified logarithmic Sobolev inequality are preserved under duality.

Modified logarithmic Sobolev inequalities for Abelian quantum double models

We establish rapid mixing for Davies Markov semigroups associated with 2D Abelian quantum double models at any positive temperature. A condition of Dobrushin-Shlosman (DS) type holds at any temperature, and we show that the latter implies a modified logarithmic Sobolev inequality for the Davies Lindbladian. A key step in the argument is to verify a strong martingale condition for the local conditional expectations of the Davies semigroup in the regime of validity of the DS condition.

Stability of thermal equilibrium in long-range quantum systems

Experimental realizations of spin models are irremediably prone to errors, which can propagate through the system corrupting experimental signals. We study how such errors affect the measurement of local observables in systems with long-range interactions, where perturbations can spread more rapidly. Specifically, we focus on the stability of thermal equilibrium and investigate its relation to the correlation structure of the system, both analytically and numerically. As a main result, we prove that the stability of local expectation values follows from the decay of correlations on the Gibbs state and the Lieb-Robinson bound, and hence that stability always holds at high temperature. We also provide numerical evidence that this stability extends to an even larger regime of interacting long-range systems. Our results support the robustness of analog simulation platforms for long-range models, and provide further evidence that computing physical quantities of interest can be significantly easier than performing arbitrary quantum computations.

Modified logarithmic Sobolev inequalities for CSS codes

We consider the class of Davies quantum semigroups modelling thermalization for translation-invariant Calderbank-Shor-Steane (CSS) codes in D dimensions. We prove that conditions of Dobrushin-Shlosman-type on the quantum Gibbs state imply a modified logarithmic Sobolev inequality with a constant that is uniform in the system's size. This is accomplished by generalizing parts of the classical results on thermalization by Stroock, Zegarlinski, Martinelli, and Olivieri to the CSS quantum setting. The results in particular imply the rapid thermalization at any positive temperature of the toric code in 2D and the star part of the toric code in 3D, implying a rapid loss of stored quantum information for these models.

Conditional Independence of 1D Gibbs States with Applications to Efficient Learning

We show that spin chains in thermal equilibrium have a correlation structure in which individual regions are strongly correlated at most with their near vicinity. We quantify this with alternative notions of the conditional mutual information, defined through the so-called Belavkin-Staszewski relative entropy. We prove that these measures decay superexponentially at every positive temperature, under the assumption that the spin chain Hamiltonian is translation-invariant. Using a recovery map associated with these measures, we sequentially construct tensor network approximations in terms of marginals of small (sublogarithmic) size. As a main application, we show that classical representations of the states can be learned efficiently from local measurements with a polynomial sample complexity. We also prove an approximate factorization condition for the purity of the entire Gibbs state, which implies that it can be efficiently estimated to a small multiplicative error from a small number of local measurements. The results extend from strictly local to exponentially-decaying interactions above a threshold temperature, albeit only with exponential decay rates. As a technical step of independent interest, we show an upper bound to the decay of the Belavkin-Staszewski relative entropy upon the application of a conditional expectation.

Continuity bounds for quantum entropies arising from a fundamental entropic inequality

We establish a tight upper bound for the difference in von Neumann entropies between two quantum states, $ρ_1$ and $ρ_2$. This bound is expressed in terms of the von Neumann entropies of the mutually orthogonal states derived from the Jordan-Hahn decomposition of the difference operator $(ρ_1 - ρ_2)$. This yields a novel entropic inequality that implies the well-known Audenaert-Fannes (AF) inequality. In fact, it also leads to a refinement of the AF inequality. We employ this inequality to obtain a uniform continuity bound for the quantum conditional entropy of two states whose marginals on the conditioning system coincide. We additionally use it to derive a continuity bound for the quantum relative entropy in both variables. Interestingly, the fundamental entropic inequality is also valid in infinite dimensions.

Belavkin-Staszewski Quantum Markov Chains

It is well-known that the conditional mutual information of a quantum state is zero if, and only if, the quantum state is a quantum Markov chain. Replacing the Umegaki relative entropy in the definition of the conditional mutual information by the Belavkin-Staszewski (BS) relative entropy, we obtain the BS-conditional mutual information, and we call the states with zero BS-conditional mutual information Belavkin-Staszewski quantum Markov chains. In this article, we establish a correspondence which relates quantum Markov chains and BS-quantum Markov chains. This correspondence allows us to find a recovery map for the BS-entropy in the spirit of the Petz recovery map. Furthermore, we show that, over the set of BS-quantum Markov chains, this correspondence constitutes an entanglement-breaking map. Moreover, we prove a structural decomposition of the Belavkin-Staszewski quantum Markov chains and also study states for which the BS-conditional mutual information is only approximately zero. We subsequently extend the aforementioned correspondence, structural decomposition and recovery map to arbitrary pairs of states and conditional expectations. As an application of the correspondence, we find the first family of states with non-vanishing conditional mutual information for which it decays superexponentially fast with the size of the middle system.

From decay of correlations to locality and stability of the Gibbs state

We show that whenever the Gibbs state of a quantum spin system satisfies decay of correlations, then it is stable, in the sense that local perturbations affect the Gibbs state only locally, and it satisfies local indistinguishability, i.e. it exhibits local insensitivity to system size. These implications hold in any dimension, require only locality of the Hamiltonian, and are based on Lieb-Robinson bounds and on a detailed analysis of the locality properties of the quantum belief propagation for Gibbs states. To demonstrate the versatility of our approach, we explicitly apply our results to several physically relevant models in which the decay of correlations is either known to hold or is proved by us. These include Gibbs states of one-dimensional spin chains with polynomially decaying interactions at any temperature, and high-temperature Gibbs states of quantum spin systems with finite-range interactions in any dimension. We also prove exponential decay of correlations above a threshold temperature for Gibbs states of one-dimensional finite spin chains with translation-invariant and exponentially decaying interactions, and then apply our general results.

Quasi-optimal sampling from Gibbs states via non-commutative optimal transport metrics

We study the problem of sampling from and preparing quantum Gibbs states of local commuting Hamiltonians on hypercubic lattices of arbitrary dimension. We prove that any such Gibbs state which satisfies a clustering condition that we coin decay of matrix-valued quantum conditional mutual information (MCMI) can be quasi-optimally prepared on a quantum computer. We do this by controlling the mixing time of the corresponding Davies evolution in a normalized quantum Wasserstein distance of order one. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that such a non-commutative transport metric has been used in the study of quantum dynamics, and the first time quasi-rapid mixing is implied by solely an explicit clustering condition. Our result is based on a weak approximate tensorization and a weak modified logarithmic Sobolev inequality for such systems, as well as a new general weak transport cost inequality. If we furthermore assume a constraint on the local gap of the thermalizing dynamics, we obtain rapid mixing in trace distance for interactions beyond the range of two, thereby extending the state-of-the-art results that only cover the nearest neighbor case. We conclude by showing that systems that admit effective local Hamiltonians, like quantum CSS codes at high temperature, satisfy this MCMI decay and can thus be efficiently prepared and sampled from.

Unified framework for continuity of sandwiched Rényi divergences

In this work, we prove uniform continuity bounds for entropic quantities related to the sandwiched Rényi divergences such as the sandwiched Rényi conditional entropy. We follow three different approaches: The first one is the "almost additive approach", which exploits the sub-/ superadditivity and joint concavity/ convexity of the exponential of the divergence. In our second approach, termed the "operator space approach", we express the entropic measures as norms and utilize their properties for establishing the bounds. These norms draw inspiration from interpolation space norms. We not only demonstrate the norm properties solely relying on matrix analysis tools but also extend their applicability to a context that holds relevance in resource theories. By this, we extend the strategies of Marwah and Dupuis as well as Beigi and Goodarzi employed in the sandwiched Rényi conditional entropy context. Finally, we merge the approaches into a mixed approach that has some advantageous properties and then discuss in which regimes each bound performs best. Our results improve over the previous best continuity bounds or sometimes even give the first continuity bounds available. In a separate contribution, we use the ALAFF method, developed in a previous article by some of the authors, to study the stability of approximate quantum Markov chains.

Strong decay of correlations for Gibbs states in any dimension

Quantum systems in thermal equilibrium are described using Gibbs states. The correlations in such states determine how difficult it is to describe or simulate them. In this article, we show that if the Gibbs state of a quantum system satisfies that each of its marginals admits a local effective Hamiltonian with short-range interactions, then it satisfies a mixing condition, that is, for any regions $A$, $C$ the distance of the reduced state $ρ_{AC}$ on these regions to the product of its marginals, $$\| ρ_{AC} ρ_A^{-1} \otimes ρ_C^{-1} - 1_{AC}\|\, ,$$ decays exponentially with the distance between regions $A$ and $C$. This mixing condition is stronger than other commonly studied measures of correlation. In particular, it implies the exponential decay of the mutual information between distant regions. The mixing condition has been used, for example, to prove positive log-Sobolev constants. On the way, we prove that the the condition regarding local effective Hamiltonian is satisfied if the Hamiltonian of the system is commuting and also commutes with every marginal of the Gibbs state. The proof of these results employs a variety of tools such as Araki's expansionals, quantum belief propagation and cluster expansions.

General Continuity Bounds for Quantum Relative Entropies

In this article, we generalize a proof technique by Alicki, Fannes and Winter and introduce a method to prove continuity bounds for entropic quantities derived from different quantum relative entropies. For the Umegaki relative entropy, we mostly recover known almost optimal bounds, whereas, for the Belavkin-Staszewski relative entropy, our bounds are new. Finally, we use these continuity bounds to derive a new entropic uncertainty relation.

Continuity of quantum entropic quantities via almost convexity

Based on the proofs of the continuity of the conditional entropy by Alicki, Fannes, and Winter, we introduce in this work the almost locally affine (ALAFF) method. This method allows us to prove a great variety of continuity bounds for the derived entropic quantities. First, we apply the ALAFF method to the Umegaki relative entropy. This way, we recover known almost tight bounds, but also some new continuity bounds for the relative entropy. Subsequently, we apply our method to the Belavkin-Staszewski relative entropy (BS-entropy). This yields novel explicit bounds in particular for the BS-conditional entropy, the BS-mutual and BS-conditional mutual information. On the way, we prove almost concavity for the Umegaki relative entropy and the BS-entropy, which might be of independent interest. We conclude by showing some applications of these continuity bounds in various contexts within quantum information theory.

Exponential decay of mutual information for Gibbs states of local Hamiltonians

The thermal equilibrium properties of physical systems can be described using Gibbs states. It is therefore of great interest to know when such states allow for an easy description. In particular, this is the case if correlations between distant regions are small. In this work, we consider 1D quantum spin systems with local, finite-range, translation-invariant interactions at any temperature. In this setting, we show that Gibbs states satisfy uniform exponential decay of correlations and, moreover, the mutual information between two regions decays exponentially with their distance, irrespective of the temperature. In order to prove the latter, we show that exponential decay of correlations of the infinite-chain thermal states, exponential uniform clustering and exponential decay of the mutual information are equivalent for 1D quantum spin systems with local, finite-range interactions at any temperature. In particular, Araki's seminal results yields that the three conditions hold in the translation-invariant case. The methods we use are based on the Belavkin-Staszewski relative entropy and on techniques developed by Araki. Moreover, we find that the Gibbs states of the systems we consider are superexponentially close to saturating the data-processing inequality for the Belavkin-Staszewski relative entropy.
