Cold-Atom Buoy: A Differential Magnetic Sensing Technique in Cold Quadrupole Traps

We present a differential technique for vector magnetic sensing based on a cold-atom cloud in a magnetic quadrupole trap. An external homogeneous magnetic field displaces the trap center in a direction and magnitude proportional to the field. By reversing the quadrupole polarity between experimental shots and comparing the resulting cloud positions, we extract a differential displacement signal that is free from common-mode effects such as gravity and weak magnetic-field inhomogeneities. The signal is directionally proportional to the external field and requires only absorption imaging, without spectroscopic interrogation. Assuming micron-scale position resolution, the technique enables field resolution at the milli-Gauss level. It offers a practical tool for field compensation in magnetically sensitive experimental stages, bridging operational regimes from Earth-level fields to atomic magnetometry. A straightforward extension to full three-dimensional sensing is possible with only a minimal addition to standard cold-atom infrastructure.

Demonstration of strong coupling of a subradiant atom array to a cavity vacuum

By considering linear scattering of laser-driven cold atoms inside an undriven high-finesse optical resonator, we experimentally demonstrate effects unique to a strongly coupled vacuum field. Arranging the atoms in an incommensurate lattice with respect to the radiation wavelength, the Bragg scattering into the cavity can be suppressed by destructive interference: the atomic array is subradiant to the cavity mode under transverse illumination. We show however, that strong collective coupling leads to a drastic modification of the excitation spectrum, as evidenced by well-resolved vacuum Rabi splitting in the intensity of the fluctuations. Furthermore, we demonstrate a significant polarization rotation in the linear scattering off the subradiant array via Raman scattering induced by the strongly coupled vacuum field.

Superquantization rule for multistability in driven-dissipative quantum systems

We present a superquantization rule which indicates the possible robust stationary states of a generic driven-dissipative quantum system. Multistability in a driven cavity mode interacting with a qudit is revealed in this way within a simple intuitive picture. The accuracy of the superquantization approach is confirmed by numerical simulations of the underlying quantum model. In the case when the qudit is composed of several two-level emitters coupled homogeneously to the cavity, we demonstrate the robustness of the superquantized steady states to single-emitter decay.

Is the photon-blockade breakdown a quantum effect? A neoclassical story

The photon-blockade breakdown bistability can be intuitively explained invoking the energy spectrum of the interacting qubit-mode system. Yet, the neoclassical solution of the driven-dissipative Jaynes-Cummings model has been shown to capture several key aspects of the phenomenon. In this paper, we set out to compare a fully quantum solution with the neo- and semi-classical solutions. Although the neoclassical theory is founded on the assumption of a pure partial state for the qubit, it is not simply the $γ\to 0$ limit of the semiclassical theory; the semi- vs. neo-classical duality being a case of non-commutativity of limits. Furthermore, we show that the neoclassical predictions still hold in case of a small qubit decay. Tracing the bistable behavior for different detunings, we show that it is robust over a significant range of $Δ$ values. We demonstrate that the aptitude of the neoclassical description is founded on the high quantum purity of the bright state of the photon-blockade breakdown bistability, which sharply differentiates this phenomenology from conventional optical bistability. It is thereby demonstrated that driven-dissipative dynamics can produce closely separable pure steady states in an interacting bipartite.

Collection efficiency of optical photons generated from microwave excitations of a Bose-Einstein condensate

Stimulated Raman scattering of atoms with $Λ$-configuration of levels is a promising tool for transducing microwave photons to optical photons. We consider an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate whose large phase-space density highly amplifies the coupling to the microwave field. Due momentum transfer to the condensate, stimulated photon scattering can occur outside of the phase-matched direction, which can be used to separate the converted photons from the strong Raman readout pulse. Conversely, in the phase-matched direction, superradiant scattering due to bosonic enhancement leads to increased efficiency of the microwave to optical conversion. We determine the optimal conditions for the emitted optical photons to be collected into the guided modes of optical fibers.
