Hydrogen isotope mixing entropy in ammonia clusters

Measured evaporation branching ratios of partially deuterated isotopologues of protonated ammonia clusters (NH$_3$)$_N$ H$^+$ ($N \geq 8$) show ratios that depend only on the clusters' deuterium mole fraction. This demonstrates randomly distributed protium and deuterium in the molecules and can be used to determine free energy differences in the product cluster. The entropy thus determined is exclusively the deuterium-protium mixing entropy. The relative dissociation energies of the four isotopologues are determined and with the support of quantum chemistry calculations, their absolute values are estimated.

IR Spectroscopic Studies of Gas-Phase Peptides

Proteins are vital biological molecules found in every living organism, and their function is determined by what shape they fold into. Peptides are essentially subsets of proteins, and therefore ideal as model systems for protein folding. The structure of a molecule is closely related to its vibrational absorption spectrum, which lies in the infrared (IR) range. However, in vivo IR spectroscopy is hindered by interference from the surrounding water. Therefore, peptides are preferably studied isolated from solution, in the gas phase. This chapter summarizes the recent IR spectroscopy studies of gas-phase peptides. The collected works show that IR spectroscopy combined with quantum chemical calculations is a powerful tool for deducing the molecular structure. Moreover the wealth of experimental spectra makes possible the evaluation of different quantum chemical models, which can be applied to the larger proteins.

Asymmetric Influence of the Amplitude-Dependent Tune Shift on the Transverse Mode-Coupling Instability

At the 3 GeV ring of the MAX IV Laboratory, a fourth generation ring-based synchrotron light source, an asymmetric influence of the sign of the amplitude-dependent tune shift (ADTS) on the transverse mode-coupling instability (TMCI) has been observed. Measurements of the instability, in dedicated single-bunch experiments at low chromaticity, revealed a significant dependence of the dynamics of the instability above threshold on the sign of the ADTS. While for a negative sign of the ADTS the crossing of the instability does not lead to a loss of beam current, a positive sign results in the loss of 40% or more of the beam current at the threshold. In order to investigate the observed asymmetry, systematic measurement of beam dynamics above the threshold have been conducted in combination with particle tracking simulations with mbtrack2 and theoretical calculations of the Landau damping due to the ADTS. The findings point towards an influence of the Landau damping in combination with the low synchrotron frequency, which indicates that this effect could become relevant in future low-emittance electron storage rings.

Single-photon hot electron ionization of C$_{70}$

Gas phase C$_{70}$ molecules have been ionized with single photons of energies between 16 eV and 70 eV and the electron spectra measured with velocity map imaging in coincidence with the ions. The doubly ionized and unfragmented species was present at photon energies of 22 eV and up, and triply charged ions from 55 eV. The low kinetic energy parts of the spectra are explained with thermal emission of transient hot electrons. Deviations at high photon energies are used to determine a value for the initial electron equilibration time. We propose a generally applicable mechanism, named Resonance Ionization Shadowing, for the creation of hot electrons by absorption of above-threshold energy photons.
