Lidar-monitoring of atmospheric fluctuations for millimeter-wave astronomical observations

Ground-based millimeter-wave astronomical observations suffer from strong contamination by the emission of inhomogeneous water vapor in the Earth's atmosphere. This emission reduces the observing efficiency and data quality even from a high-altitude, dry location such as the Atacama plateau in Chile. We propose to continuously monitor atmospheric water vapor with a co-pointing dedicated Raman lidar system. We show, with numerical simulations and proof-of-concept observations, how a synergistic use of atmospheric lidar data has the potential to substantially improve the quality of astronomical data sets.

A theoretical approach to density-split clustering

We present an analytical model for density-split correlation functions, that probe galaxy clustering in different density environments. Specifically, we focus on the cross-correlation between density-split regions and the tracer density field. We show that these correlation functions can be expressed in terms of the two-point probability density function (PDF) of the density field. We derive analytical predictions using three levels of approximation for the two-point PDF: a bivariate Gaussian distribution, a bivariate shifted log-normal distribution, and a prediction based on the Large Deviation Theory (LDT) framework. For count-in-cell densities, obtained through spherical top-hat smoothing, one can leverage spherical collapse dynamics and LDT to predict the density two-point PDF in the large-separation regime relative to the smoothing radius. We validate our model against dark matter N-body simulations in real space, incorporating Poisson shot noise and galaxy bias. Our results show that the LDT prediction outperforms the log-normal approximation, and agrees with simulations on large scales within the cosmic variance of a typical DESI DR1 sample, despite relying on only one degree of freedom.

Baryon acoustic oscillations from the complete SDSS-III Ly$α$-quasar cross-correlation function at $z=2.4$

We present a measurement of baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) in the cross-correlation of quasars with the Ly$α$-forest flux-transmission at a mean redshift $z=2.40$. The measurement uses the complete SDSS-III data sample: 168,889 forests and 234,367 quasars from the SDSS Data Release DR12. In addition to the statistical improvement on our previous study using DR11, we have implemented numerous improvements at the analysis level allowing a more accurate measurement of this cross-correlation. We also developed the first simulations of the cross-correlation allowing us to test different aspects of our data analysis and to search for potential systematic errors in the determination of the BAO peak position. We measure the two ratios $D_{H}(z=2.40)/r_{d} = 9.01 \pm 0.36$ and $D_{M}(z=2.40)/r_{d} = 35.7 \pm 1.7$, where the errors include marginalization over the non-linear velocity of quasars and the metal - quasar cross-correlation contribution, among other effects. These results are within $1.8σ$ of the prediction of the flat-$Λ$CDM model describing the observed CMB anisotropies. We combine this study with the Ly$α$-forest auto-correlation function [2017A&A...603A..12B], yielding $D_{H}(z=2.40)/r_{d} = 8.94 \pm 0.22$ and $D_{M}(z=2.40)/r_{d} = 36.6 \pm 1.2$, within $2.3σ$ of the same flat-$Λ$CDM model.
