Supersymmetry in an interacting Majorana model on the kagome lattice

We construct a supersymmetric model of interacting Majorana fermions on the kagome lattice. In the infinite-coupling limit, the model exhibits an extensively degenerate ground state manifold separated in two topological sectors, in addition to two parity supersectors. An exact solution for thin-torus geometries allows us to analytically construct the entire zero-energy ground state manifold. Upon inclusion of hopping terms with energy scale $g$, the supersymmetry is spontaneously broken with the ground state energy density scaling as $g^4$. We also briefly discuss the non-interacting limit of the model, which exhibits a zero-energy flat band and Majorana Chern bands.

Family of Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev models motivated by experimental considerations

Several condensed-matter platforms have been proposed recently to realize the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model in their low-energy limit. In these proposed realizations, the characteristic SYK behavior is expected to occur under certain assumptions about the underlying physical system that (i) render all bilinear terms small compared to four-fermion interactions and (ii) ensure that the coupling constants are approximately all-to-all and independent random variables. In this work we explore, both analytically and numerically, the family of models that arises when we relax these assumptions in ways motivated by real physical systems. By relaxing (i) and allowing large bilinear terms, we obtain a novel, exactly-solvable cousin of the SYK model. It exhibits two distinct phases separated by a quantum phase transition characterized by a power-law, $\sim |ω|^{-1/3}$ scaling of the low-energy spectral density, despite being a non-interacting model. By relaxing (ii), we obtain close relatives of the SYK model which exhibit interesting behaviors, including a chaotic non-Fermi liquid phase with continuously varying fermion scaling dimension, and a phase transition to a disordered Fermi liquid as a function of interaction range and disorder length scale.

Spin ice thin films: Large-N theory and Monte Carlo simulations

We explore the physics of highly frustrated magnets in confined geometries, focusing on the Coulomb phase of pyrochlore spin ices. As a specific example, we investigate thin films of nearest-neighbor spin ice, using a combination of analytic large-N techniques and Monte Carlo simulations. In the simplest film geometry, with surfaces perpendicular to the [001] crystallographic direction, we observe pinch points in the spin-spin correlations characteristic of a two-dimensional Coulomb phase. We then consider the consequences of crystal symmetry breaking on the surfaces of the film through the inclusion of orphan bonds. We find that when these bonds are ferromagnetic, the Coulomb phase is destroyed by the presence of fluctuating surface magnetic charges, leading to a classical Z_2 spin liquid. Building on this understanding, we discuss other film geometries with surfaces perpendicular to the [110] or the [111] direction. We generically predict the appearance of surface magnetic charges and discuss their implications for the physics of such films, including the possibility of an unusual Z_3 classical spin liquid. Finally, we comment on open questions and promising avenues for future research.

Electric field control of emergent electrodynamics in quantum spin ice

We study the coupling between conventional (Maxwell) and emergent electrodynamics in quantum spin ice, a 3+1-dimensional $U(1)$ quantum spin liquid. We find that a uniform electric field can be used to tune the properties of both the ground state and excitations of the spin liquid. In particular, it induces emergent birefringence, rendering the speed of the emergent light anisotropic and polarization-dependent. A sufficiently strong electric field triggers a quantum phase transition into new $U(1)$ quantum spin liquid phases which trap emergent electric $π$-fluxes. The flux patterns of these new phases depend on the direction of the electric field. Strikingly, some of the canonical pinch points in the spin structure factor, characteristic of classical spin ice, emerge near the phase transition, while they are absent in the quantum spin liquid phases. Estimating the electric field strength required, we find that this transition is potentially accessible experimentally. Finally, we propose a minimal mechanism by which an oscillating electric field can generate emergent radiation inside a quantum spin ice material with non-Kramers spin doublets.

Shape dependence of two-cylinder Renyi entropies for free bosons on a lattice

Universal scaling terms occurring in Renyi entanglement entropies have the potential to bring new understanding to quantum critical points in free and interacting systems. Quantitative comparisons between analytical continuum theories and numerical calculations on lattice models play a crucial role in advancing such studies. In this paper, we exactly calculate the universal two-cylinder shape dependence of entanglement entropies for free bosons on finite-size square lattices, and compare to approximate functions derived in the continuum using several different ansatzes. Although none of these ansatzes are exact in the thermodynamic limit, we find that numerical fits are in good agreement with continuum functions derived using the AdS/CFT correspondence, an extensive mutual information model, and a quantum Lifshitz model. We use fits of our lattice data to these functions to calculate universal scalars defined in the thin-cylinder limit, and compare to values previously obtained for the free boson field theory in the continuum.

Dynamical and anharmonic effects on the electron-phonon coupling and the zero-point renormalization of the electronic structure

The renormalization of the band structure at zero temperature due to electron-phonon coupling is investigated in diamond, BN, LiF and MgO crystals. We implement a dynamical scheme to compute the frequency-dependent self-energy and the resulting quasiparticle electronic structure. Our calculations reveal the presence of a satellite band below the Fermi level of LiF and MgO. We show that the renormalization factor (Z), which is neglected in the adiabatic approximation, can reduce the zero-point renormalization (ZPR) by as much as 40%. Anharmonic effects in the renormalized eigenvalues at finite atomic displacements are explored with the frozen-phonon method. We use a non-perturbative expression for the ZPR, going beyond the Allen-Heine-Cardona theory. Our results indicate that high-order electron-phonon coupling terms contribute significantly to the zero-point renormalization for certain materials.
