Blow-up at finite time for the generalized SQG equations in the Sobolev well-posedness regime

We prove finite-time singularity formation for the forced generalized surface quasi-geostrophic equation in the singular velocity regime $γ\in(0,1)$, where $γ=0$ corresponds to SQG. For every such $γ$, we construct a smooth, compactly supported initial datum and a time-dependent force $F$ for which the corresponding solution $θ$ is classical on $[0,1)$ with finite energy for all times, but loses Sobolev regularity at $t=1$. More precisely, there exists \[ κ_0>2+γ+\frac{γ^2(1-γ)}{25(4+γ)}, \] such that the force satisfies $F\in L^1([0,1];H^κ(\mathbb{R}^2))$ for every $κ\in[2+γ,κ_0]$, whereas \[ \lim_{T\nearrow1}\int_0^T\|θ(\cdot,t)\|_{H^κ}\,dt=\infty \] for every exponent in the same interval. At the same time, the solution remains uniformly bounded in $H^{κ_1}$ throughout its lifespan for any \[κ_1\in\left[0,2+γ-\frac{γ(1-γ)}{2(4+γ)}\right].\] Then, the singularity occurs within the Sobolev well-posedness regime and cannot be attributed to insufficient regularity of the force or the initial conditions. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first finite-time blow-up result for classical finite-energy solutions of the generalized SQG equations in a well-posedness regime.

A sharp stability criterion for Euler equations via sparseness

We introduce sparse versions of function spaces that are relevant to characterize the solutions of Euler equations without concentration. The standard Sobolev space $H^{-1}$ is given a sparse structure that allows to measure the degree of compactness of embeddings into $H^{-1}$ and provides new quantitative general criteria for $H^{-1}$-stability. Indices of sparseness are defined, and function spaces whose indices have prescribed decay are constructed, resulting in an improvement of the classical $H^{-1}$-stability results: sparse stability. The analysis relies on the introduction of sparse Riesz-Morrey-Tadmor spaces, that are characterized via maximal operators and new sparse domination theorems, together with extrapolation techniques. Our methods also yield improvements on recent results on the conservation of energy of physically realizable solutions of $2$D-Euler.

Spaces of Besov-Sobolev type and a problem on nonlinear approximation

We study fractional variants of the quasi-norms introduced by Brezis, Van Schaftingen, and Yung in the study of the Sobolev space $\dot W^{1,p}$. The resulting spaces are identified as a special class of real interpolation spaces of Sobolev-Slobodecki\uı spaces. We establish the equivalence between Fourier analytic definitions and definitions via difference operators acting on measurable functions. We prove various new results on embeddings and non-embeddings, and give applications to harmonic and caloric extensions. For suitable wavelet bases we obtain a characterization of the approximation spaces for best $n$-term approximation from a wavelet basis via smoothness conditions on the function; this extends a classical result by DeVore, Jawerth and Popov.

Sparse Brudnyi and John-Nirenberg Spaces

A generalization of the theory of Y. Brudnyi \cite{yuri}, and A. and Y. Brudnyi \cite{BB20a}, \cite{BB20b}, is presented. Our construction connects Brudnyi's theory, which relies on local polynomial approximation, with new results on sparse domination. In particular, we find an analogue of the maximal theorem for the fractional maximal function, solving a problem proposed by Kruglyak--Kuznetsov. Our spaces shed light on the structure of the John--Nirenberg spaces. We show that $SJN_{p}$ (sparse John--Nirenberg space) coincides with $L^{p},1<p<\infty.$ This characterization yields the John--Nirenberg inequality by extrapolation and is useful in the theory of commutators.

On the $A_\infty$ condition for elliptic operators in 1-sided NTA domains satisfying the capacity density condition

Let $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^{n+1}$, $n\ge 2$, be a 1-sided non-tangentially accessible domain (i.e., quantitatively open and path-connected) satisfiying the capacity density condition. Let $L_0 u=-\mathrm{div}(A_0 \nabla u)$, $Lu=-\mathrm{div}(A\nabla u)$ be two real uniformly elliptic operators in $Ω$, with $ω_{L_0}, ω_L$ the associated elliptic measures. We establish the equivalence between the following properties: (i) $ω_L \in A_{\infty}(ω_{L_0})$, (ii) $L$ is $L^p(ω_{L_0})$-solvable for some $p\in (1,\infty)$, (iii) bounded null solutions of $L$ satisfy Carleson measure estimates with respect to $ω_{L_0}$, (iv) the conical square function is controlled by the non-tangential maximal function in $L^q(ω_{L_0})$ for some (or for all) $q\in (0,\infty)$ for any null solution of $L$, and (v) $L$ is $\mathrm{BMO}(ω_{L_0})$-solvable. Moreover, in each of the properties (ii)-(v) it is enough to consider the class of solutions $u(X)=ω_L^X(S)$ with arbitrary Borel sets $S\subset\partialΩ$. Also, we characterize the absolute continuity of $ω_{L_0}$ with respect to $ω_L$ in terms of some qualitative local $L^2(ω_{L_0})$ estimates for the truncated conical square function for any bounded null solution of $L$. This is also equivalent to the finiteness $ω_{L_0}$-a.e. of the truncated conical square function for any bounded null solution of $L$. As applications, we show that $ω_{L_0}\llω_L$ if the disagreement of the coefficients satisfies some qualitative quadratic estimate in truncated cones for $ω_{L_0}$-a.e. vertex. Finally, when $L_0$ is either the transpose of $L$ or its symmetric part, we obtain the corresponding absolute continuity when the antisymmetric part of the coefficients has some controlled oscillation in truncated cones for $ω_{L_0}$-a.e. vertex.
