Phase synchronization of fish schools through spatial gaps

We investigate how sensory coupling mediates phase coherence between spatially separated, confined active systems. Using two fish schools separated by a water-filled transparent gap, we isolate vision as the primary interaction channel. Under boundary confinement, each school's center-of-mass heading exhibits noisy bistable dynamics, spontaneously switching between two antiparallel directions along the partition wall. Turning events in one school bias the orientation of the other, driving distance-dependent phase synchronization. We model this behavior using two coupled stochastic bistable oscillators whose exact solution quantitatively reproduces the empirical results. Our work establishes a precise connection between nonequilibrium active systems and coupled stochastic oscillators, offering insight into boundary-spanning information transfer in living collectives.

Bike3S: A Tool for Bike Sharing Systems Simulation

Vehicle sharing systems are becoming increasingly popular. The effectiveness of such systems depends, among other factors, on different strategic and operational management decisions and policies, like the dimension of the fleet or the distribution of vehicles. It is of foremost importance to be able to anticipate and evaluate the potential effects of such strategies before they can be successfully deployed. In this paper we present Bike3S, a simulator for a station-based bike sharing system. The simulator performs semi-realistic simulations of the operation of a bike sharing system and allows for evaluating and testing different management decisions and strategies. In particular, the simulator has been designed to test different station capacities, station distributions, and balancing strategies. The simulator carries out microscopic agent-based simulations, where users of different types can be defined that act according to their individual goals and objectives which influences the overall dynamics of the whole system.

Virial inequalities for steady states in relativistic galactic dynamics

It is well known that steady states of the Vlasov-Poisson system, a widely used model in non-relativistic galactic dynamics, have negative energy. In this paper we derive the analogous property for two relativistic generalizations of the Vlasov-Poisson system: The Nordström-Vlasov system and the Einstein-Vlasov system. In the first case we show that the energy of steady states is bounded by their total rest mass; in the second case, where we also assume spherical symmetry, we prove an inequality which involves not only the energy and the rest mass, but also the central redshift. In both cases the proof makes use of integral inequalities satisfied by time depedent solutions and which are derived using the vector fields multipliers method.

Dispersive behavior in Galactic Dynamics

The purpose of this paper is to study the relations between different concepts of dispersive solution for the Vlasov-Poisson system in the gravitational case. Moreover we give necessary conditions for the existence of partially and totally dispersive solutions and a sufficient condition for the occurence of statistical dispersion. These conditions take the form of inequalities involving the energy, the mass and the momentum of the solution. Examples of dispersive and non-dispersive solutions--steady states, periodic solutions and virialized solutions--are also considered.
