Rabi model as a quantum coherent heat engine: From quantum biology to superconducting circuits

We propose a multilevel quantum heat engine with a working medium described by a generalized Rabi model which consists of a two-level system coupled to a single mode bosonic field. The model is constructed to be a continuum limit of a quantum biological description of light harvesting complexes so that it can amplify quantum coherence by a mechanism which is a quantum analog of classical Huygen's clocks. The engine operates in quantum Otto cycle where the working medium is coupled to classical heat baths in the isochoric processes of the four stroke cycle; while either the coupling strength or the resonance frequency is changed in the adiabatic stages. We found that such an engine can produce work with an efficiency close to Carnot bound when it operates at low temperatures and in the ultrastrong coupling regime. Interplay of quantum coherence and quantum correlations on the engine performance is discussed in terms of second order coherence, quantum mutual information and logarithmic negativity of entanglement. We point out that the proposed quantum Otto engine can be implemented experimentally with the modern circuit quantum electrodynamic systems where flux qubits can be coupled ultrastrongly to superconducting transmission line resonators.

Non-Hermitian quantum dynamics and entanglement of coupled nonlinear resonators

We consider a generalization of recently proposed non-Hermitian model for resonant cavities coupled by a chiral mirror by taking into account number non-conservation and nonlinear interactions. We analyze non-Hermitian quantum dynamics of populations and entanglement of the cavity modes. We find that an interplay of initial coherence and non-Hermitian coupling leads to a counterintuitive population transfer. While an initially coherent cavity mode is depleted, the other empty cavity can be populated more or less than the initially filled one. Moreover, presence of nonlinearity yields population collapse and revival as well as bipartite entanglement of the cavity modes. In addition to coupled cavities, we point out that similar models can be found in $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetric Bose-Hubbard dimers of Bose-Einstein condensates or in coupled soliton-plasmon waveguides. We specifically illustrate quantum dynamics of populations and entanglement in a heuristic model that we propose for a soliton-plasmon system with soliton amplitude dependent asymmetric interaction. Degree of asymmetry, nonlinearity and coherence are examined to control plasmon excitations and soliton-plasmon entanglement. Relations to $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetric lasers and Jahn-Teller systems are pointed out.

Quantum correlated heat engine with nonlinear spin-spin interactions

We propose a four level quantum heat engine in Otto cycle with a working substance of two spins subject to an external magnetic field and coupled to each other by a one-axis twisting spin squeezing nonlinear interaction. We calculate the positive work and the efficiency of the engine for different parameter regimes. In particular, we investigate the effects of quantum correlations at the end of the two isochoric processes of the Otto cycle, as measured by the entanglement of formation and quantum discord, on the work extraction and efficiency. The regimes where the quantum correlations could enhance the efficiency and work extraction are characterized.

Z2 Topological insulator of ultra cold atoms in bichromatic optical lattices

We investigate the effect of a strong bichromatic deformation to the $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ topological insulator in a fermionic ultracold atomic system proposed by B. Béri and N. R. Cooper, Phys.Rev.Lett. {\bf 107}, 145301 (2011). Large insulating gap of this system allows for examination of strong perturbations. We consider bichromatic perturbation along all axes on a triangular optical lattice. We find that $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ topological character of the system is robust up to a certain depth of the deformation. The lowest band can become topologically trivial while the lowest two bands are always protected.

A tight binding model for quantum spin Hall effect on triangular optical lattice

We propose a tight binding model for the quantum spin Hall system on triangular optical lattice and we determined the edge state spectrum which contains gap traversing states as the hallmark of $\mathds{Z}_{2}$ topological insulator. The advantage of this system is the possibility of implementing it in the fermionic ultracold atomic system whose nearly free electron limit is proposed by B. Béri and N. R. Cooper, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 107}, 145301 (2011).

Reversal and tunability of the surface plasmon enhanced optical forces on a nanorod pair in the presence of a dielectric interlayer

We investigate numerically the modification of surface-plasmon assisted optical force on a gold nanorod pair by incorporating dielectric interlayer. The frequency dependent electromagnetic forces are obtained through full-vectorial solution of Maxwell equations with a finite element solver. We obtain the common and relative electromagnetic force experienced by the nanorods with dielectric interlayers of different permittivity or thickness. In particular, we demonstrate that the use of a liquid crystal interlayer can be utilized as a dynamic tuning mechanism for the reversal of the direction of the relative force.

Dissipative Nonlinear Josephson Junction of Optical Soliton and Surface Plasmon

We examine the dynamics of a dissipative photonic Josephson junction formed by the weak coupling of an optical soliton in a nonlinear dielectric waveguide and a co-propagating surface plasmon along a parallel metal surface with a linear dielectric spacer. We employ a heuristic model with a coupling function that depends on the soliton amplitude, and consider two phenomenological dissipation mechanisms separately: angular velocity dissipation and population imbalance dissipation. In the former dissipation mechanism, the system exhibits phase-slip phenomenon where the odd-πphase modes decay into even-πphase modes. The latter damping mechanism sculptures the phase-space significantly by introducing complex features, among which Hopf type bifurcations are notable. We show that some of the bifurcation points expand to stable limit cycles for certain regimes of the model parameters.

Transfer of spin squeezing and particle entanglement between atoms and photons in coupled cavities via two-photon exchange

We examine transfer of particle entanglement and spin squeezing between atomic and photonic subsystems in optical cavities coupled by two-photon exchange. Each cavity contains a single atom, interacting with cavity photons with a two-photon cascade transition. Particle entanglement is characterized by evaluating optimal spin squeezing inequalities, for the cases of initially separable and entangled two-photon states. It is found that particle entanglement is first generated among the photons in separate cavities and then transferred to the atoms. The underlying mechanism is recognized as an inter-cavity two-axis twisting spin squeezing interaction, induced by two-photon exchange, and its optimal combination with the intra-cavity atom-photon coupling. Relative effect of non-local two-photon exchange and local atom-photon interactions of cavity photons on the spin squeezing and entanglement transfer is pointed out.

Dynamical analysis of a weakly coupled nonlinear dielectric waveguide -- surface-plasmon model as a new type of Josephson Junction

We propose that a weakly-coupled nonlinear dielectric waveguide -- surface-plasmon system can be formulated as a new type of Josephson junction. Such a system can be realized along a metal - dielectric interface where the dielectric medium hosts a nonlinear waveguide (e.g. fiber) for soliton propagation. We demonstrate that the system is in close analogy to the bosonic Josephson-Junction (BJJ) of atomic condensates at very low temperatures, yet exhibits different dynamical features. In particular, the inherently dynamic coupling parameter between soliton and surface-plasmon generates self-trapped oscillatory states at nonzero fractional populations with zero and $π$ time averaged phase difference. The salient features of the dynamics are presented in the phase space.

Effects of Zero Mode and Thin Spectrum on the Life Time of Atomic Bose Einstein Condensates

Reviewing the ideas developed in, the ground state life time of a finite size atomic Bose Einstein condensate is studied for coherent, squeezed coherent and thermal coherent ground states. Ground state evolution of coherent and squeezed coherent states in a double well potential is studied. Effects of thin spectrum on Bose-Einstein condensates is discussed and quasiparticle excitation lifetimes are calculated. It is shown that the effect of the states we use on the free energy vanishes in the thermodynamic limit. Possible extension to a double well potential and effect of a second broken symmetry is also discussed.

Spin squeezing and entanglement in spinor-1 condensates

We analyze quantum correlation properties of a spinor-1 (f=1) Bose Einstein condensate using the Gell-Mann realization of SU(3) symmetry. We show that previously discussed phenomena of condensate fragmentation and spin-mixing can be explained in terms of the hypercharge symmetry. The ground state of a spinor-1 condensate is found to be fragmented for ferromagnetic interactions. The notion of two bosonic mode squeezing is generalized to the two spin (U-V) squeezing within the SU(3) formalism. Spin squeezing in the isospin subspace (T) is found and numerically investigated. We also provide new results for the stationary states of spinor-1 condensates.

Motional rotating wave approximation for harmonically trapped particles

We present a family of generalized unitary transformations that simplifies the Hamiltonian for a harmonically trapped two level atom (or ion) interacting with a plane wave laser field. Novel near resonant single as well as double vibrational phonon dynamical regimes are found. The validity condition of the often used motional rotating wave approximation (MRWA) is examined both numerically and analytically. Large errors are found within typical regimes of MRWA with respect to the motional degrees of freedom. The effects of MRWA in trapped ion systems are shown to be opposite to that of the rotating wave approximation (RWA) in the usual Jaynes-Cummings model. Our study points to a more restrictive condition on particle localization (Lamb-Dicke) parameter for the validity of MRWA in the single phonon dynamical regime. It also sheds new light on quantum information storage and processing with trapped atoms.

Propagation of Raman-matched laser pulses through a Bose-Einstein condensate

We investigate the role of non-uniform spatial density profiles of trapped atomic Bose-Einstein condensates in the propagation of Raman-matched laser pulses under conditions for electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). We find that the sharp edged axial density profile of an interacting condensate (due to a balance between external trap and repulsive atomic interaction) is advantageous for obtaining ultra slow averaged group velocities. Our results are in good quantitative agreement with a recent experiment report [Nature {\bf 397}, 594 (1999)].

Statistics of Raman-Active Excitations via Masurement of Stokes-Anti-Stokes Correlations

A general fundamental relation connecting the correlation of Stokes and anti-Stokes modes to the quantum statistical behavior of vibration and pump modes in Raman-active materials is derived. We show that under certain conditions this relation can be used to determine the equilibrium number variance of phonons.Time and temperature ranges for which such conditions can be satisfied are studied and found to be available in todays' experimental standards. Furthermore, we examine the results in the presence of multi-mode pump as well as for the coupling of pump to the many vibration modes and discuss their validity in these cases.
