Dual Fear Mechanisms Shaping Stochastic Population Dynamics under the Allee Effect

Traditional population models that include predator-prey interactions attribute demographic changes directly to predation-related effects. However, predator-induced fear in prey has increasingly been recognised as an important factor shaping population dynamics. In this study, we propose a cubic population model in which fear acts through two distinct functional channels for a single-species population exhibiting the Allee effect. In this model, fear reduces the intrinsic growth rate through a multiplicative suppression mechanism while also playing an integrated role in modulating the growth and interaction dynamics by rescaling the saturation structure of the Holling type III interaction term. The stochastic extension of the model is described by a Langevin formalism containing correlated additive and multiplicative Gaussian noise, and the steady state probability distribution (SSPD) is analytically obtained using the corresponding Fokker-Planck equation. The analytical solution is validated by numerical simulations. The SSPD reveals both noise-induced transitions and fear-controlled regime changes between low- and high-density states, with the two-channel effect of fear producing structural competition and non-monotonic changes in the distribution. These are analysed through phenomenological bifurcation (P-bifurcation) diagrams and three-dimensional distribution surfaces. Additionally, statistical properties, parameter sensitivity, and escape dynamics are investigated through normalised moments, Fisher information, and mean first-passage time (MFPT) calculations. Notably, our model treats fear as an independent control parameter and provides a natural explanation for several conflicting empirical findings in the literature on fear-mediated population dynamics, while also offering an analytical basis for conservation biology and ecosystem management.

The steady state distribution for diffusion in a logarithmic-harmonic potential with stochastic resetting

The steady state distribution of the position of a Brownian particle diffusing in logarithmic-harmonic potential with stochastic resetting is obtained analytically. We show that there are two critical conditions that determine the behavior of the stationary distribution function (SDF). We also investigate how the steady state distribution, which occurs due to the nature of the logarithmic-harmonic potential in the absence of reset, changes in the presence of the reset mechanism.

Deterministic and Stochastic Research of Cubic Population Model with Harvesting

A detailed examination of the effect of harvesting on a population has been carried out by extending the standard cubic deterministic model by considering a population under Allee effect with a quadratic function representing harvesting. Weak and strong Allee effect transitions, carrying capacity, and Allee threshold change according to harvesting is first discussed in the deterministic model. A Fokker Planck equation has been obtained starting from a Langevin equation subject to correlated Gaussian white noise with zero mean, and an Approximate Fokker Planck Equation has been obtained from a Langevin equation subject to correlated Gaussian colored noise with zero mean. This allowed to calculate the stationary probability distributions of populations, and thus to discuss the effects of linear and nonlinear (Holling type-II) harvesting for populations under Allee effect and subject to white and colored noises respectively.

Effect of Harvest on MTE Calculated by Single Step Process for Stochastic Population Model Under Allee Effect

In this study, first we expand the cubic population model under Allee effect with a quadratic harvest function that represents harvest effect. Then, using four reaction equations representing the micro-interactions within the population under the influence of demographic noise and harvest, we obtain the mean field equations containing the effect of the harvest from the solution of the master equation. In this way, a relationship is established between the micro and macro parameters of the population. As a result, we calculate Mean Time to Extinction (MTE) by using WKB approximation for single step processes and observe the effect of harvesting.

Stable and unstable roots of ion temperature gradient driven mode using curvature modified plasma dispersion functions

Basic, local kinetic theory of ion temperature gradient driven (ITG) mode, with adiabatic electrons is reconsidered. Standard unstable, purely oscillating as well as damped solutions of the local dispersion relation are obtained using a bracketing technique that uses the argument principle. This method requires computing the plasma dielectric function and its derivatives, which are implemented here using modified plasma dispersion functions with curvature and their derivatives, and allows bracketing/following the zeros of the plasma dielectric function which corresponds to different roots of the ITG dispersion relation. We provide an open source implementation of the derivatives of modified plasma dispersion functions with curvature, which are used in this formulation. Studying the local ITG dispersion, we find that near the threshold of instability the unstable branch is rather asymmetric with oscillating solutions towards lower wave numbers (i.e. drift waves), and damped solutions toward higher wave numbers. This suggests a process akin to inverse cascade by coupling to the oscillating branch towards lower wave numbers may play a role in the nonlinear evolution of the ITG, near the instability threshold. Also, using the algorithm, the linear wave diffusion is estimated for the marginally stable ITG mode.
