Numerical Approximation of the stochastic Cahn--Hilliard equation with singular potential

We discuss the numerical approximation of the stochastic Cahn--Hilliard equation with a singular double-obstacle potential and multiplicative conservative noise. We propose a regularised fully discrete finite element approximation scheme for the problem and show that it satisfies stability estimates which are uniform with respect to the discretization parameters. We show convergence of the approximation for vanishing discretization parameters towards a regularised version of the singular stochastic Cahn--Hilliard equation by monotonicity arguments. Hence, thanks to a uniform $H^1$-estimate for the regularised problem we show that the regularised solution converges towards the pathwise unique probabilistically strong solution of the original singular stochastic Cahn--Hilliard equation. We conclude by presenting numerical simulations where we compare the regularised numerical approximation to its unregularised counterpart and illustrate the effect of the conservative noise.

Numerical approximation of bi-harmonic wave maps into spheres

We construct a structure preserving non-conforming finite element approximation scheme for the bi-harmonic wave maps into spheres equation. It satisfies a discrete energy law and preserves the non-convex sphere constraint of the continuous problem. The discrete sphere constraint is enforced at the mesh-points via a discrete Lagrange multiplier. This approach restricts the spatial approximation to the (non-conforming) linear finite elements. We show that the numerical approximation converges to the weak solution of the continuous problem in spatial dimension $d=1$. The convergence analysis in dimensions $d>1$ is complicated by the lack of a discrete product rule as well as the low regularity of the numerical approximation in the non-conforming setting. Hence, we show convergence of the numerical approximation in higher-dimensions by introducing additional stabilization terms in the numerical approximation. We present numerical experiments to demonstrate the performance of the proposed numerical approximation and to illustrate the regularizing effect of the bi-Laplacian which prevents the formation of singularities.

Numerical approximation of the stochastic Cahn-Hilliard equation with space-time white noise near the sharp interface limit

We consider the stochastic Cahn-Hilliard equation with additive space-time white noise $ε^γ\dot{W}$ in dimension $d=2,3$, where $ε>0$ is an interfacial width parameter. We study numerical approximation of the equation which combines a structure preserving implicit time-discretization scheme with a discrete approximation of the space-time white noise. We derive a strong error estimate for the considered numerical approximation which is robust with respect to the inverse of the interfacial width parameter $ε$. Furthermore, by a splitting approach, we show that for sufficiently large scaling parameter $γ$, the numerical approximation of the stochastic Cahn-Hilliard equation converges uniformly to the deterministic Hele-Shaw/Mullins-Sekerka problem in the sharp interface limit $ε\rightarrow 0$.

Numerical approximation of Dynkin games with asymmetric information

We propose an implementable, neural network-based structure preserving probabilistic numerical approximation for a generalized obstacle problem describing the value of a zero-sum differential game of optimal stopping with asymmetric information. The target solution depends on three variables: the time, the spatial (or state) variable, and a variable from a standard $(I-1)$-simplex which represents the probabilities with which the $I$ possible configurations of the game are played. The proposed numerical approximation preserves the convexity of the continuous solution as well as the lower and upper obstacle bounds. We show convergence of the fully-discrete scheme to the unique viscosity solution of the continuous problem and present a range of numerical studies to demonstrate its applicability.

Improved estimates for the sharp interface limit of the stochastic Cahn-Hilliard equation with space-time white noise

We study the sharp interface limit of the stochastic Cahn-Hilliard equation with cubic double-well potential and additive space-time white noise $ε^σ\dot{W}$ where $ε>0$ is an interfacial width parameter. We prove that, for sufficiently large scaling constant $σ>0$, the stochastic Cahn-Hilliard equation converges to the deterministic Mullins-Sekerka/Hele-Shaw problem for $ε\rightarrow 0$. The convergence is shown in suitable fractional Sobolev norms as well as in the $L^p$-norm for $p\in (2, 4]$ in spatial dimension $d=2,3$. This generalizes the existing result for the space-time white noise to dimension $d=3$ and improves the existing results for smooth noise, which were so far limited to $p\in \left(2, \frac{2d+8}{d+2}\right]$ in spatial dimension $d=2,3$. As a byproduct of the analysis of the stochastic problem with space-time white noise, we identify minimal regularity requirements on the noise which allow convergence to the sharp interface limit in the $\mathbb{H}^1$-norm and also provide improved convergence estimates for the sharp interface limit of the deterministic problem.

Stochastic partial differential equations arising in self-organized criticality

We study scaling limits of the weakly driven Zhang and the Bak-Tang-Wiesenfeld (BTW) model for self-organized criticality. We show that the weakly driven Zhang model converges to a stochastic partial differential equation (PDE) with singular-degenerate diffusion. In addition, the deterministic BTW model is shown to converge to a singular-degenerate PDE. Alternatively, the proof of the scaling limit can be understood as a convergence proof of a finite-difference discretization for singular-degenerate stochastic PDEs. This extends recent work on finite difference approximation of (deterministic) quasilinear diffusion equations to discontinuous diffusion coefficients and stochastic PDEs. In addition, we perform numerical simulations illustrating key features of the considered models and the convergence to stochastic PDEs in spatial dimension $d=1,2$.

Convergent numerical approximation of the stochastic total variation flow

We study the stochastic total variation flow (STVF) equation with linear multiplicative noise. By considering a limit of a sequence of regularized stochastic gradient flows with respect to a regularization parameter $\varepsilon$ we obtain the existence of a unique variational solution of the STVF equation which satisfies a stochastic variational inequality. We propose an energy preserving fully discrete finite element approximation for the regularized gradient flow equation and show that the numerical solution converges to the solution of the unregularized STVF equation. We perform numerical experiments to demonstrate the practicability of the proposed numerical approximation. This paper contains a mistake: in the proof of Lemma 4.4 the last inequality is not valid. Meanwhile, this mistake has been fixed in [6] for a slightly modified numerical approximation in spatial dimension $d=1$. For $d\geq 1$ the validity of the estimate in Lemma 4.4 is still open but the convergence of the numerical approximation can be shown by a different approach, see [5].

Convergent numerical approximation of the stochastic total variation flow with linear multiplicative noise: the higher dimensional case

We consider fully discrete finite element approximation of the stochastic total variation flow equation (STVF) with linear multiplicative noise which was previously proposed in \cite{our_paper}. Due to lack of a discrete counterpart of stronger a priori estimates in higher spatial dimensions the original convergence analysis of the numerical scheme was limited to one spatial dimension, cf. \cite{stvf_erratum}. In this paper we generalize the convergence proof to higher dimensions.

Correction to: Convergent numerical approximation of the stochastic total variation flow

We correct two errors in our paper [4]. First error concerns the definition of the SVI solution, where a boundary term which arises due to the Dirichlet boundary condition, was not included. The second error concerns the discrete estimate [4, Lemma 4.4], which involves the discrete Laplace operator. We provide an alternative proof of the estimate in spatial dimension $d=1$ by using a mass lumped version of the discrete Laplacian. Hence, after a minor modification of the fully discrete numerical scheme the convergence in $d=1$ follows along the lines of the original proof. The convergence proof of the time semi-discrete scheme, which relies on the continuous counterpart of the estimate [4, Lemma 4.4], remains valid in higher spatial dimension. The convergence of the fully discrete finite element scheme from [4] in any spatial dimension is shown in [3] by using a different approach.

A posteriori estimates for the stochastic total variation flow

We derive a posteriori error estimates for a fully discrete time-implicit finite element approximation of the stochastic total variaton flow (STVF) with additive space time noise. The estimates are first derived for an implementable fully discrete approximation of a regularized stochastic total variation flow. We then show that the derived a posteriori estimates remain valid for the unregularized flow up to a perturbation term that can be controlled by the regularization parameter. Based on the derived a posteriori estimates we propose a pathwise algorithm for the adaptive space-time refinement and perform numerical simulation for the regularized STVF to demonstrate the behavior of the proposed algorithm.

Numerical approximation of probabilistically weak and strong solutions of the stochastic total variation flow

We propose a fully practical numerical scheme for the simulation of the stochastic total variation flow (STFV). The approximation is based on a stable time-implicit finite element space-time approximation of a regularized STVF equation. The approximation also involves a finite dimensional discretization of the noise that makes the scheme fully implementable on physical hardware. We show that the proposed numerical scheme converges to a solution that is defined in the sense of stochastic variational inequalities (SVIs). As a by product of our convergence analysis we provide a generalization of the concept of probabilistically weak solutions of stochastic partial differential equation (SPDEs) to the setting of SVIs. We also prove convergence of the numerical scheme to a probabilistically strong solution in probability if pathwise uniqueness holds. We perform numerical simulations to illustrate the behavior of the proposed numerical scheme {as well as its non-conforming variant} in the context of image denoising.

Robust a posteriori estimates for the stochastic Cahn-Hilliard equation

We derive a posteriori error estimates for a fully discrete finite element approximation of the stochastic Cahn-Hilliard equation. The a posteriori bound is obtained by a splitting of the equation into a linear stochastic partial differential equation (SPDE) and a nonlinear random partial differential equation (RPDE). The resulting estimate is robust with respect to the interfacial width parameter and is computable since it involves the discrete principal eigenvalue of a linearized (stochastic) Cahn-Hilliard operator. Furthermore, the estimate is robust with respect to topological changes as well as the intensity of the stochastic noise. We provide numerical simulations to demonstrate the practicability of the proposed adaptive algorithm.

Numerical approximation of singular-degenerate parabolic stochastic PDEs

We study a general class of singular degenerate parabolic stochastic partial differential equations (SPDEs) which include, in particular, the stochastic porous medium equations and the stochastic fast diffusion equation. We propose a fully discrete numerical approximation of the considered SPDEs based on the very weak formulation. By exploiting the monotonicity properties of the proposed formulation we prove the convergence of the numerical approximation towards the unique solution. Furthermore, we construct an implementable finite element scheme for the spatial discretization of the very weak formulation and provide numerical simulations to demonstrate the practicability of the proposed discretization.

Numerical approximation of the value of a stochastic differential game with asymmetric information

We consider a convexity constrained Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman-type obstacle problem for the value function of a zero-sum differential game with asymmetric information. We propose a convexity-preserving probabilistic numerical scheme for the approximation of the value function which is discrete w.r.t. the time and convexity variables, and show that the scheme converges to the unique viscosity solution of the considered problem. Furthermore, we generalize the semi-discrete scheme to obtain an implementable fully discrete numerical approximation of the value function and present numerical experiments to demonstrate the properties of the proposed numerical scheme.
