Kneading the Lorenz attractor

A Lorenz map $f:[0,1]\to[0,1]$ is a piecewise continuous map, modeled after an idealized version of the Lorenz attractor. In this paper we settle the following question - how much of the dynamics of the Lorenz attractor can be modeled by such one-dimensional model? In this paper we will prove there exist open regions in the parameter space of the Lorenz system where one can canonically reduce the dynamics of the Lorenz attractor into those of a symmetric Lorenz map $F_β$ with a constant slope $β\in(1,2]$. As we will show, not only the map $F_β$ encodes many of the essential features of the Lorenz attractor, it also governs many of its bifurcations. As such, our results correlate closely with the results of numerical studies, and possibly explain the bifurcation phenomena observed in the Lorenz attractor.

The emergence of chaos in population game dynamics induced by comparisons

Precise description of population game dynamics introduced by revision protocols - an economic model describing the agent's propensity to switch to a better-performing strategy - is of importance in economics and social sciences in general. In this setting innovation or imitation of others is the force which drives the evolution of the economic system. As the continuous-time game dynamics is relatively well understood, the same cannot be said about revision driven dynamics in the discrete time. We investigate the behavior of agents in a $2\times 2$ anti-coordination game with symmetric random matching and a unique mixed Nash equilibrium. In continuous time the Nash equilibrium is attracting and induces a global evolutionary stable state. We show that in the discrete time one can construct (either innovative or imitative) revision protocol and choose a level of the time step, under which the game dynamics is Li-Yorke chaotic, inducing complex and unpredictable behavior of the system, precluding stable predictions of equilibrium. Moreover, we reveal that this unpredictability is encoded into any imitative revision protocol. Furthermore, we show that for any such game there exists a perturbed pairwise proportional imitation protocol introducing chaotic behavior of the agents for sufficiently large time step.

Renormalization in Lorenz maps -- completely invariant sets and periodic orbits

The paper deals with dynamics of expanding Lorenz maps, which appear in a natural way as Poincarè maps in geometric models of well-known Lorenz attractor. Using both analytical and symbolic approaches, we study connections between periodic points, completely invariant sets and renormalizations. We show that some renormalizations may be connected with completely invariant sets while some others don't. We provide an algorithm to detect the renormalizations that can be recovered from completely invariant sets. Furthermore, we discuss the importance of distinguish one-side and double-side preimage. This way we provide a better insight into the structure of renormalizations in Lorenz maps. These relations remained unnoticed in the literature, therefore we are correcting some gaps existing in the literature, improving and completing to some extent the description of possible dynamics in this important field of study.
