Complex magnetic properties of EuAgAs single crystals

EuAgAs is an antiferromagnetic topological material exhibiting intriguing magnetic behavior. We investigate its structural, magnetic, and local electronic properties using X ray diffraction, Mössbauer spectroscopy, dc magnetization, ac susceptibility, and heat capacity measurements. The results confirm antiferromagnetic ordering below $T_\text{N}$ and reveal pronounced magnetic anisotropy and several field induced metamagnetic transitions. We construct the magnetic phase diagram of EuAgAs, identifying several distinct magnetic regions. The field and temperature dependent behavior observed suggests a noncollinear magnetic structure in the low field regime. The sequence of field induced transitions resembles that observed in centrosymmetric rare earth compounds hosting skyrmion phases, suggesting that competing magnetic interactions may play an important role in stabilizing the observed magnetic states.

Synthesis of europium-based crystals containing As or P by a flux method: attempts to grow EuAgP single crystals

Europium-based materials are highly attractive due to their diverse range of physical properties. In these studies, we aimed to synthesize single crystals of the potentially topological semimetallic compound EuAgP, which up to this day has only been obtained in polycrystalline form. The flux method was employed for the syntheses, using fluxes such as: Bi, Sn, Pb, and In, in their various ratios. The purpose of using Bi flux was to try synthesizing an analog of EuAgAs single crystals, by fully substituting arsenic with phosphorus. The obtained crystals were characterized by x-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. Despite many unsuccessful attempts to synthesize EuAgP single crystals, the study provides valuable insights into how different fluxes and their ratios influence the final synthesis product. It also underscores the complexity of designing analogs between arsenides and phosphides.

Ambient and high pressure studies of structural, electronic and magnetic properties of EuZn$_2$P$_2$ single crystal

A thorough study of EuZn$_2$P$_2$ single crystals, which were grown from Sn flux, was performed using both bulk (heat capacity, ac susceptibility, dc magnetization, electrical resistivitivity, magnetoresistance) and microscopic (Mössbauer spectroscopy) techniques. Electrical resistance and magnetic susceptibility were measured also under high pressure conditions (up to 19 GPa and 9.5 GPa, respectively). Further insight into electronic properties and phonons is provided by ab initio calculations. The results indicate that EuZn$_2$P$_2$ is an antiferromagnet with strong Eu-Eu exchange coupling of ferromagnetic type within the basal plane and weaker antiferromagnetic interaction along the c axis. The Eu magnetic moments are tilted from the basal plane. Hydrostatic pressure strongly affects both magnetic (increase of the Néel temperature) and electronic (suppression of the band gap and semi metallic behavior) properties, indicating a strong interplay of structure with magnetic and electronic degrees of freedom.

Direct Optical Probing of the Magnetic Properties of the Layered Antiferromagnet CrPS$_4$

Unusual magnetic properties of Van der Waals type antiferromagnetic semiconductors make them highly attractive for spintronics and optoelectronics. A link between the magnetic and optical properties of those materials, required for practical applications, has not been, however, established so far. Here, we report on a combined experimental and theoretical study of magnetic, optical, and structural properties of bulk CrPS$_{4}$ samples. We find that the magnetic-field-dependent circular polarization degree of the photoluminescence is a direct measure of the net magnetization of CrPS$_{4}$. Complementary, Raman scattering measured as a function of magnetic field and temperature enables the determination of the magnetic susceptibility curve of the material. Our experimental results are backed by Our experimental results are supported by density functional theory calculations that take as input the lattice parameters determined from temperature-dependent X-ray diffraction measurements. This allows us to explain the impact of spin ordering on the spectral position of Raman transitions in CrPS$_4$, as well as anomalous temperature shifts of selected of them. The presented method for all-optical determination of the magnetic properties is highly promising for studies of spin ordering and magnetic phase transitions in single- or a few-layer samples of magnetic layered materials, for which a poor signal-to-noise ratio precludes any reliable neutron scattering or magnetometry measurements.

Mössbauer Spectroscopic and XRD Studies of two eta-Fe2Al5 Intermetallics

Two intermetallic FeAl compounds with Al content of 70.68 and 72.17 at.pct were studied using Mössbauer spectroscopy (5 to 296 K) and X-ray diffraction (15 to 300 K). The compounds were found to crystallize in the orthorhombic Cmcm space group (eta-phase). The collected data revealed that dynamics of the Fe atoms (harmonic in entire temperature range) is significantly different that Al atoms. For the latter strong anharmonicity was evidenced. Moreover, it was found that partial filling of the different Al sites leads to occurrence of low and high symmetry coordination of Fe atoms, which was reflected in occurrence of two distinct doublets in Mössbauer spectra. All spectral parameters of the doublets as well as the Debye temperature, force constant, kinetic and potential energies of vibrations were determined. Those results revealed significant differences between both alloys, likely originating from approaching the stability boundary of the eta-phase for Fe-Al 72.17 at.pct alloy.

Crystal structures of Fe-gluconate

Fe-gluconate, Fe(C_6H_11O_7_2xH_2O is a well-known material widely used for iron supplementation. On the other hand, it is used in food industry as a coloring agent, in cosmetic industry for skin and nail conditioning and metallurgy. Despite of wide range of applications its physical properties were not studied extensively. In this study, Fe-gluconate with three different amount of water viz. x=2 (fully hydrated, 0 < x < 2 (intermediate) and x=0 (dry) was investigated by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Mössbauer spectroscopic (MS) methods. The former in the temperature range of 20-300 K, and the latter at 295 K. Based on the XRD measurements crystallographic structures were determined: monoclinic (space group I2) for the hydrated sample and triclinic (space group P1) for the dry sample. The partially hydrated sample was two-phased. Unit cells parameters for both structures show strong, very complex and non-monotonic temperature dependences. Mössbauer spectroscopic measurements gave evidence that iron in all samples exist in form of Fe(II) and Fe(III) ions. The amount of the latter equals to ca.30% in the hydrated sample and to ca.20% in the dry one.

Mössbauer Spectroscopic Study of Amorphous Fe-Gluconate

Amorphous Fe-gluconate was studied by means of the X-ray diffraction and Mössbauer spectroscopy. Spectra measured in the temperature range between 78 and 295 K were analysed in terms of three doublets using a thin absorber approximation method. Two of the doublets were associated with the major Fe(II) phase (72%) and one with the minor Fe(III) phase (28%). Based on the obtained results the following quantities characteristic of lattice dynamical properties were determined: Debye temperature from the temperature dependence of the center shift and that of the spectral area (recoil-free factor), force constant, change of the kinetic and potential energies of vibrations. The lattice vibrations of Fe ions present in both ferrous and ferric phases are not perfectly harmonic, yet on average they are. Similarities and differences to the crystalline Fe-gluconate are also reported.
