Black hole initial data by numerical integration of the parabolic-hyperbolic form of the constraints

The parabolic-hyperbolic form of the constraints is integrated numerically. The applied numerical stencil is $4^{th}$ order accurate (in the spatial directions) while 'time'-integration is made by using the method of lines with a $4^{th}$ order accurate Runge-Kutta scheme. The proper implementation of the applied numerical method is verified by convergence tests and monitoring the relative and absolute errors determined by comparing numerical and analytically known solutions of the constraints involving boosted and spinning vacuum single black hole configurations. The main part of our investigations is, however, centered on construction of initial data for distorted black holes which, in certain cases, have non-negligible gravitational wave content. Remarkably the applied new method is unprecedented in that it allows to construct initial data for highly boosted and spinning black holes, essentially for the full physical allowed ranges of these parameters. In addition, the use of the evolutionary form of the constraints is free from applying any sort of boundary conditions in the strong field regime.

Gravitational collapse involving electric charge in the decoupling limit of the dilatonic Gauss--Bonnet gravity

The paper discusses a collapse of a self-interacting electrically charged scalar field in the decoupling limit of the dilatonic Gauss-Bonnet gravity. The emerging spacetimes were either non-singular or singular and containing black holes of a Schwarzschild type. A size of the region, in which the gravitational dynamics was observed was controlled by an absolute value of the Gauss-Bonnet coupling. Dependencies of characteristics of the forming black holes on the dilatonic and Gauss-Bonnet parameters turned out to be similar in the case of black hole masses and radii as well as their time of formation in terms of retarded time. In the cases of masses and radii minima were observed, while in the remaining case a maximum existed. The electric charge of the emerging black holes possessed a maximum when measured versus the dilatonic coupling constant and was strictly decreasing with the Gauss-Bonnet coupling. All the characteristics changed monotonically with the field self-interaction strengths. The times of formation and charges of black holes decreased, while masses and radii increased with the self-interaction strengths of the dynamical fields. Values of the energy density, radial pressure, pressure anisotropy and the collapsing scalar fields were the biggest along the null hypersurface of propagation of the initial peaks of the scalar fields. For big values of the Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant, an increase in their values was also observed in the vicinity of the central singularity within the whole range of advanced time. Non-zero values of the dilaton field outside the black hole event horizon may indicate a formation of a hairy black hole. The local temperature calculated along the apparent horizon was increasing for late times of the evolution, that is in non-dynamical spacetime regions, and exhibited extrema in areas, where the dynamics of the gravity-matter system was observed.

Gravitational dynamics in the Higgs-dark matter sector toy model: the field theoretic perspective

The objective of the paper was to examine gravitational evolutions in the Higgs--dark matter sector toy model. The real part of the Higgs doublet was modelled by a neutral scalar. Two dark matter candidates introduced were the dark photon and a charged complex scalar. Non-minimal couplings of both scalars to gravity were included. The coupling channels between the ordinary and dark matter sectors were kinetic mixing between the electromagnetic and dark $U(1)$ fields and the Higgs portal coupling among the scalars. The structures of emerging singular spacetimes were either of Schwarzschild or Reissner-Nordström types. The non-minimal scalar--gravity couplings led to an appearance of timelike portions of apparent horizons where they transform from spacelike to null. The features of dynamical black holes were described as functions of the model parameters. The black holes formed later and their radii and masses were smaller as the mass parameter of the complex scalar increased. The dependencies on the coupling of the Higgs field to gravity exhibited extrema, which were a maximum for the time of the black holes formation and minima in the cases of their radii and masses. A set of quantities associated with an observer moving with the evolving matter was proposed. The energy density, radial pressure and pressure anisotropy within dynamical spacetimes get bigger as the singularity is approached. The increase is more considerable in the Reissner-Nordström spacetimes. The apparent horizon local temperature changes monotonically in the minimally coupled case and non-monotonically when non-minimal scalar--gravity couplings are involved.

Two interacting scalars system in curved spacetime -- vacuum stability from the curved spacetime Effective Field Theory (cEFT) perspective

In this article we investigated the influence of the gravity induced higher dimensional operators on the issue of vacuum stability in a model containing two interacting scalar fields. As a framework we used the curved spacetime Effective Field Theory (cEFT) applied to the aforementioned system in which one of the scalars is heavy. After integrating out the heavy scalar we used the standard Euclidean approach to the obtained cEFT. Apart from analyzing the influence of standard operators like the non-minimal coupling to gravity and the dimension six contribution to the scalar field potential, we also investigated the rarely discussed dimension six contribution to the kinetic term and the new gravity induced contribution to the scalar quartic self-interaction.

Top-down approach to the curved spacetime effective feld theory (cEFT) -- theory and examples

The effective field theory (EFT) turns out to be an instrument of an immense value in all aspects of modern particle physics being theory, phenomenology or experiment. In the paper I will show how to extend the systematic top down approach to construction of the EFT proposed by Hitoshi Murayama (LBL, Berkeley) and separately by John Ellis (King's Coll. London) groups to the curved spacetime. To this end, I will take advantage of the heat kernel method so far extensively used in obtaining the one-loop effective action in curved spacetime. After an introduction of the formalism I will discuss its application to the problem of an influence of gravity on the stability of the Higgs effective potential.

Black hole factory: a review of double-null formalism

In this review paper, we comprehensively summarize numerical applications of double-null formalism for studying dynamics within the theory of gravity. By using the double-null coordinates, we can investigate dynamical black holes and gravitational phenomena within spherical symmetry, including gravitational collapse, formation of horizons and singularities, as well as evaporations. This formalism can be extended to generic situations, where we can change dimensions, topologies, the gravity sector, as well as the matter sector. We also discuss its possible implications for black hole physics and particle astrophysics. This strong numerical tool will have lots of future applications for various research areas including general relativity, string theory, and various approaches to quantum gravity.

Curved spacetime effective field theory (cEFT) -- construction with the heat kernel method

In the presented paper we tackle the problem of the effective field theory in curved spacetime (cEFT) construction. To this end, we propose to use the heat kernel method. After introducing the general formalism based on the well established formulas known from the application of the heat kernel method to deriving the one-loop effective action in curved spacetime, we tested it on selected problems. The discussed examples were chosen to serve as a check of validity of the derived formulas by comparing the obtained results to the known flat spacetime calculations. On the other hand, they allowed us to obtain new results concerning the influence of the gravity induced operators on the effective field theory without unnecessary calculational complications.

Dark matter cosmic string in the gravitational field of a black hole

We examined analytically and proposed a numerical model of an Abelian Higgs dark matter vortex in the spacetime of a stationary axisymmetric Kerr black hole. In analytical calculations the dark matter sector was modeled by an addition of a U (1)-gauge field coupled to the visible sector. The backreaction analysis revealed that the impact of the dark vortex presence is far more complicated than causing only a deficit angle. The vortex causes an ergosphere shift and the event horizon velocity is also influenced by its presence. These phenomena are more significant than in the case of a visible vortex sector. The area of the event horizon of a black hole is diminished and this decline is larger in comparison to the Kerr black hole with an Abelian Higgs vortex case. After analyzing the gravitational properties for the general setup, we focused on the subset of models that are motivated by particle physics. We retained the Abelian Higgs model as a description of the dark matter sector (this sector contained a heavy dark photon and an additional complex scalar) and added a real scalar representing the real component of the Higgs doublet in the unitary gauge, as well as an additional U (1)-gauge field representing an ordinary electromagnetic field. Moreover, we considered two coupling channels between the visible and dark sectors, which were the kinetic mixing between the gauge fields and a quartic coupling between the scalar fields. After solving the equations of motion for the matter fields numerically we analyzed properties of the cosmic string in the dark matter sector and its influence on the visible sector fields that are directly coupled to it. We found out that the presence of the cosmic string induced spatial variation in the vacuum expectation value of the Higgs field and a nonzero electromagnetic field around the black hole.

Darkflation -- one scalar to rule them all?

The problem of explaining both inflationary and dark matter physics in the framework of a minimal extension of the Standard Model was investigated. To this end, the Standard Model completed by a real scalar singlet playing a role of the dark matter candidate has been considered. We assumed both the dark matter field and the Higgs doublet to be nonminimally coupled to gravity. Using quantum field theory in curved spacetime we derived an effective action for the inflationary period and analyzed its consequences. In this approach, after integrating out both dark matter and Standard Model sectors we obtained the effective action expressed purely in terms of the gravitational field. We paid special attention to determination, by explicit calculations, of the form of coefficients controlling the higher-order in curvature gravitational terms. Their connection to the Standard Model coupling constants has been discussed.

Static configurations and evolution of higher dimensional brane-dilaton black hole system

Static configurations and a dynamical evolution of the system composed of a higher-dimensional spherically symmetric dilaton black hole and the Dirac-Goto-Nambu brane were investigated. The studies were conducted for three values of the dilaton coupling constant, describing the uncoupled case, the low-energy limit of the string theory and dimensionally reduced Klein-Kaluza theories. When the black hole is nonextremal, two types of static configurations are observed, a brane which intersects the black hole horizon and a brane not having any common points with the accompanying black hole. As the number of spacetime dimensions increases, the brane bend in the vicinity of the black hole disappears closer to its horizon. Dynamical evolution of the system results in an expulsion of the black hole from the brane. It proceeds faster for bigger values of the bulk spacetime dimension and thicker branes. The value of the dilatonic coupling constant does not influence neither the static configurations nor the dynamical behavior of the examined nonextremal system. In the extremal dilaton black hole case one obtains expulsion of the brane which is independent on the spacetime dimensionality and the value of the coupling constant. Dynamical studies of the configurations in the extremal case reveal that the course of evolution of the system is similar to the nonextremal one, except for a slightly earlier expulsion of the black hole from the brane.

Gravity and the stability of the Higgs sector

We pursued the question of the influence of a strong gravitational field on the structure of the Higgs effective potential in the gauge-less top-Higgs sector of the Standard Model with an additional scalar singlet. To this end, we calculated the one-loop corrected effective potential in an arbitrary curved spacetime. We have found that the gravity induced terms in the effective potential may influence its behavior in both small and large field regions. This result indicated the necessity of a more careful investigation of the effect of high curvature in the problems concerning the stability of the Higgs effective potential in the full Standard Model.

Stability of the effective potential of the gauge-less top-Higgs model in curved spacetime

We investigate stability of the Higgs effective potential in curved spacetime. To this end, we consider the gauge-less top-Higgs sector with an additional scalar field. Explicit form of the terms proportional to the squares of the Ricci scalar, the Ricci tensor and the Riemann tensor that arise at the one-loop level in the effective action has been determined. We have investigated the influence of these terms on the stability of the scalar effective potential. The result depends on background geometry. In general, the potential becomes modified both in the region of the electroweak minimum and in the region of large field strength.

Dark sector impact on gravitational collapse of an electrically charged scalar field

Dark matter and dark energy are dominating components of the Universe. Their presence affects the course and results of processes, which are driven by the gravitational interaction. The objective of the paper was to examine the influence of the dark sector on the gravitational collapse of an electrically charged scalar field. A phantom scalar field was used as a model of dark energy in the system. Dark matter was modeled by a complex scalar field with a quartic potential, charged under a U(1)-gauge field. The dark components were coupled to the electrically charged scalar field via the exponential coupling and the gauge field-Maxwell field kinetic mixing, respectively. Complete non-linear simulations of the investigated process were performed. They were conducted from regular initial data to the end state, which was the matter dispersal or a singularity formation in a spacetime. During the collapse in the presence of dark energy dynamical wormholes and naked singularities were formed in emerging spacetimes. The wormhole throats were stabilized by the violation of the null energy condition, which occurred due to a significant increase of a value of the phantom scalar field function in its vicinity. The square of mass parameter of the dark matter scalar field potential controlled the formation of a Cauchy horizon or wormhole throats in the spacetime. The joint impact of dark energy and dark matter on the examined process indicated that the former decides what type of an object forms, while the latter controls the amount of time needed for the object to form. Additionally, the dark sector suppresses the natural tendency of an electrically charged scalar field to form a dynamical Reissner-Nordström spacetime during the gravitational collapse.

Abelian-Higgs hair on stationary axisymmetric black hole in Einstein-Maxwell-axion-dilaton gravity

We studied, both analytically and numerically, an Abelian Higgs vortex in the spacetime of stationary axisymmetric black hole being the solution of the low-energy limit of the heterotic string theory, acted as hair on the black hole background. Taking into account the gravitational backreaction of the vortex we show that its influence is far more subtle than causing only a conical defect. As a consequence of its existence, we found that the ergosphere was shifted as well as event horizon angular velocity was affected by its presence. Numerical simulations reveal the strong dependence of the vortex behaviour on the black hole charge and mass of the Higgs boson. For large masses of the Higgs boson and large value of the charge, black hole is always pierced by an Abelian Higgs vortex, while small values of the charge and Higgs boson mass lead to the expulsion of Higgs field.

Fate of Yang-Mills black hole in early Universe

According to the Big Bang Theory as we go back in time the Universe becomes progressively hotter and denser. This leads us to believe that the early Universe was filled with hot plasma of elementary particles. Among many questions concerning this phase of history of the Universe there are questions of existence and fate of magnetic monopoles and primordial black holes. Static solution of Einstein-Yang-Mills system may be used as a toy model for such a black hole. Using methods of field theory we will show that its existence and regularity depend crucially on the presence of fermions around it.
