Uncertainty-Reality Complementarity and Entropic Uncertainty Relations

Reality of quantum observables, a feature of long-standing interest within foundations of quantum mechanics, has recently been quantified and deeply studied by means of entropic measures [Phys. Rev. A 97, 022107 (2018)]. However, there is no state-independent "reality trade-off" between noncommuting observables, as in certain systems all observables are real [Europhys. Lett. 112, 40005 (2015)]. We show that the entropic uncertainty relation in the presence of quantum memory [Nature Phys. 6, 659 (2010)] perfectly supplements the discussed notion of reality, rendering trade-offs between reality and quantum uncertainty. State-independent complementarity inequalities involving entropic measures of both, uncertainty and reality, for two observables are presented.

Stabilizable Gaussian states

The unavoidable interaction of quantum systems with their environment usually results in the loss of desired quantum resources. Suitably chosen system Hamiltonians, however, can, to some extent, counteract such detrimental decay, giving rise to the set of stabilizable states. Here, we discuss the possibility to stabilize Gaussian states in continuous-variable systems. We identify necessary and sufficient conditions for such stabilizability and elaborate these on two benchmark examples, a single, damped mode and two locally damped modes. The obtained stabilizability conditions, which are formulated in terms of the states' covariance matrices, are, more generally, also applicable to non-Gaussian states, where they may similarly help to, e.g., discuss entanglement preservation and/or detection up to the second moments.

Uncertainty Relations for coarse-grained measurements: an overview

Uncertainty relations involving complementary observables are one of the cornerstones of quantum mechanics. Aside from their fundamental significance, they play an important role in practical applications, such as detection of quantum correlations and security requirements in quantum cryptography. In continuous variable systems, the spectra of the relevant observables form a continnuum and this necessitates the coarse graining of measurements. However, these coarse-grained observables do not necessarily obey the same uncertainty relations as the original ones, a fact that can lead to false results when considering applications. That is, one cannot naively replace the original observables in the uncertainty relation for the coarse-grained observables and expect consistent results. As such, a number of uncertainty relations that are specifically designed for coarse-grained observables have been developed. In recognition of the 90$^{th}$ anniversary of the seminal Heisenberg uncertainty relation, celebrated last year, and all the subsequent work since then, here we give a review of the state of the art of coarse-grained uncertainty relations in continuous variable quantum systems, as well as their applications to fundamental quantum physics and quantum information tasks. Our review is meant to be balanced in its content, since both theoretical considerations and experimental perspectives are put on an equal footing.

Gauge invariant information concerning quantum channels

Motivated by the gate set tomography we study quantum channels from the perspective of information which is invariant with respect to the gauge realized through similarity of matrices representing channel superoperators. We thus use the complex spectrum of the superoperator to provide necessary conditions relevant for complete positivity of qubit channels and to express various metrics such as average gate fidelity.

Testing for entanglement with periodic coarse-graining

Continuous variables systems find valuable applications in quantum information processing. To deal with an infinite-dimensional Hilbert space, one in general has to handle large numbers of discretized measurements in tasks such as entanglement detection. Here we employ the continuous transverse spatial variables of photon pairs to experimentally demonstrate novel entanglement criteria based on a periodic structure of coarse-grained measurements. The periodization of the measurements allows for an efficient evaluation of entanglement using spatial masks acting as mode analyzers over the entire transverse field distribution of the photons and without the need to reconstruct the probability densities of the conjugate continuous variables. Our experimental results demonstrate the utility of the derived criteria with a success rate in entanglement detection of $\sim60\%$ relative to $7344$ studied cases.

Mutual Unbiasedness in Coarse-grained Continuous Variables

The notion of mutual unbiasedness for coarse-grained measurements of quantum continuous variable systems is considered. It is shown that while the procedure of "standard" coarse graining breaks the mutual unbiasedness between conjugate variables, this desired feature can be theoretically established and experimentally observed in periodic coarse graining. We illustrate our results in an optics experiment implementing Fraunhofer diffraction through a periodic diffraction grating, finding excellent agreement with the derived theory. Our results are an important step in developing a formal connection between discrete and continuous variable quantum mechanics.

Majorization uncertainty relations for mixed quantum states

Majorization uncertainty relations are generalized for an arbitrary mixed quantum state $ρ$ of a finite size $N$. In particular, a lower bound for the sum of two entropies characterizing probability distributions corresponding to measurements with respect to arbitrary two orthogonal bases is derived in terms of the spectrum of $ρ$ and the entries of a unitary matrix $U$ relating both bases. The obtained results can also be formulated for two measurements performed on a single subsystem of a bipartite system described by a pure state, and consequently expressed as uncertainty relation for the sum of conditional entropies.

Error regions in quantum state tomography: computational complexity caused by geometry of quantum states

The outcomes of quantum mechanical experiments are inherently random. It is therefore necessary to develop stringent methods for quantifying the degree of statistical uncertainty about the results of quantum experiments. For the particularly relevant task of quantum state estimation, it has been shown that a significant reduction in uncertainty can be achieved by taking the positivity of quantum states into account. However -- the large number of partial results and heuristics notwithstanding -- no efficient general algorithm is known that produces an optimal uncertainty region from experimental data and the prior constraint of positivity. Here, we make this problem precise and show that the general case is NP-hard. Our result leaves room for the existence of efficient approximate solutions, and therefore does not yet imply that the practical task of quantum uncertainty quantification is intractable. However, it does show that there exists a non-trivial trade-off between optimality and computational efficiency for error regions. We prove two versions of the result: One for frequentist and one for Bayesian statistics.

One-parameter Fisher-Rényi complexity: Notion and hydrogenic applications

In this work the one-parameter Fisher-Rényi measure of complexity for general $d$-dimensional probability distributions is introduced and its main analytic properties are discussed. Then, this quantity is determined for the hydrogenic systems in terms of the quantum numbers of the quantum states and the nuclear charge.

Exploring complete positivity in hierarchy equations of motion

We derive a purely algebraic framework for the identification of hierarchy equations of motion that induce completely positive dynamics and demonstrate the applicability of our approach with several examples. We find bounds on the violation of complete positivity for microscopically derived hierarchy equations of motion and construct well-behaved phenomenological models with strongly non-Markovian revivals of quantum coherence.

Nonlinear Schrödinger equation from generalized exact uncertainty principle

Inspired by the generalized uncertainty principle (GUP), which adds gravitational effects to the standard description of quantum uncertainty, we extend the exact uncertainty principle (EUP) approach by Hall and Reginatto [J. Phys. A: Math. Gen. (2002) 35 3289], and obtain a (quasi)nonlinear Schrödinger equation. This quantum evolution equation of unusual form, enjoys several desired properties like separation of non-interacting subsystems or planewave solutions for free particles. Starting with the harmonic oscillator example, we show that every solution of this equation respects the gravitationally-induced minimal position uncertainty proportional to the Planck length. Quite surprisingly, our result successfully merges the core of classical physics with non-relativistic quantum mechanics in its extremal form. We predict that the commonly accepted phenomenon, namely a modification of a free-particle dispersion relation due to quantum gravity might not occur in reality.

Monotone measures of statistical complexity

We introduce and discuss the notion of monotonicity for the complexity measures of general probability distributions, patterned after the resource theory of quantum entanglement. Then, we explore whether this property is satisfied by the three main intrinsic measures of complexity (Cramer-Rao, Fisher-Shannon, LMC) and some of their generalizations.

Uncertainty relations for characteristic functions

We present the uncertainty relation for the characteristic functions (ChUR) of the quantum mechanical position and momentum probability distributions. This inequality is more general than the Heisenberg Uncertainty Relation, and is saturated in two extremal cases for wavefunctions described by periodic Dirac combs. We further discuss a broad spectrum of applications of the ChUR, in particular, we constrain quantum optical measurements involving general detection apertures and provide the uncertainty relation that is relevant for Loop Quantum Cosmology. A method to measure the characteristic function directly using an auxiliary qubit is also briefly discussed.

Contrast in Multipath Interference and Quantum Coherence

We develop a rigorous connection between statistical properties of an interference pattern and the coherence properties of the underlying quantum state. With explicit examples, we demonstrate that even for inaccurate reconstructions of interference patterns properly defined statistical moments permit a reliable characterization of quantum coherence.

Certainty relations, mutual entanglement and non-displacable manifolds

We derive explicit bounds for the average entropy characterizing measurements of a pure quantum state of size $N$ in $L$ orthogonal bases. Lower bounds lead to novel entropic uncertainty relations, while upper bounds allow us to formulate universal certainty relations. For $L=2$ the maximal average entropy saturates at $\log N$ as there exists a mutually coherent state, but certainty relations are shown to be nontrivial for $L \ge 3$ measurements. In the case of a prime power dimension, $N=p^k$, and the number of measurements $L=N+1$, the upper bound for the average entropy becomes minimal for a collection of mutually unbiased bases. Analogous approach is used to study entanglement with respect to $L$ different splittings of a composite system, linked by bi-partite quantum gates. We show that for any two-qubit unitary gate $U\in \mathcal{U}(4)$ there exist states being mutually separable or mutually entangled with respect to both splittings (related by $U$) of the composite system. The latter statement follows from the fact that the real projective space $\mathbb{R}P^{3}\subset\mathbb{C}P^{3}$ is non-displacable. For $L=3$ splittings the maximal sum of $L$ entanglement entropies is conjectured to achieve its minimum for a collection of three mutually entangled bases, formed by two mutually entangling gates.

Majorization approach to entropic uncertainty relations for coarse-grained observables

We improve the entropic uncertainty relations for position and momentum coarse-grained measurements. We derive the continuous, coarse-grained counterparts of the discrete uncertainty relations based on the concept of majorization. The obtained entropic inequalities involve two Rényi entropies of the same order, and thus go beyond the standard scenario with conjugated parameters. In a special case describing the sum of two Shannon entropies the majorization-based bounds significantly outperform the currently known results in the regime of larger coarse graining, and might thus be useful for entanglement detection in continuous variables.

Occam's Razor Cuts Away the Maximum Entropy Principle

I show that the maximum entropy principle can be replaced by a more natural assumption, that there exists a phenomenological function of entropy consistent with the microscopic model. The requirement of existence provides then a unique construction of the related probability density. I conclude the letter with an axiomatic formulation of the notion of entropy, which is suitable for exploration of the non-equilibrium phenomena.

Strong Majorization Entropic Uncertainty Relations

We analyze entropic uncertainty relations in a finite dimensional Hilbert space and derive several strong bounds for the sum of two entropies obtained in projective measurements with respect to any two orthogonal bases. We improve the recent bounds by Coles and Piani, which are known to be stronger than the well known result of Maassen and Uffink. Furthermore, we find a novel bound based on majorization techniques, which also happens to be stronger than the recent results involving largest singular values of submatrices of the unitary matrix connecting both bases. The first set of new bounds give better results for unitary matrices close to the Fourier matrix, while the second one provides a significant improvement in the opposite sectors. Some results derived admit generalization to arbitrary mixed states, so that corresponding bounds are increased by the von Neumann entropy of the measured state. The majorization approach is finally extended to the case of several measurements.
