Anomalous hydrodynamic fluctuations in the quantum XXZ spin chain

The quantum XXZ spin-1/2 chain features non-Gaussian spin current fluctuations in the regime of easy-axis anisotropy. Using ballistic macroscopic fluctuation theory, we derive the exact probability distribution of typical spin-current fluctuations in thermal equilibrium. The obtained nested Gaussian distribution is fully characterized by its variance which we analytically relate to the spin diffusion constant and static spin susceptibility, and compare with numerical simulations. By unveiling how the same mechanism which leads to anomalous charge current fluctuations in single-file systems manifests itself in the XXZ chain, our approach establishes the universal hydrodynamic origin of the observed anomalous fluctuations.

Universality in driven systems with a multiply-degenerate umbilic point

We investigate a driven particle system, a multilane asymmetric exclusion process, where the particle number in every lane is conserved, and stationary state is fully uncorrelated. The phase space has, starting from three lanes and more, an umbilic manifold where characteristic velocities of all the modes but one coincide, thus allowing us to study a weakly hyperbolic system with arbitrarily large degeneracy. We then study space-time fluctuations in the steady state, at the umbilic manifold, which are expected to exhibit universal scaling features. We formulate an effective mode-coupling theory (MCT) for the multilane model within the umbilic subspace and test its predictions. Unlike in the bidirectional two-lane model with an umbilic point studied earlier, here we find a robust $z=3/2$ dynamical exponent for the umbilic mode. The umbilic scaling function, obtained from Monte-Carlo simulations appears to have a universal shape for a range of interaction parameters and depends only on umbilic mode degeneracy. Remarkably, the shape and dynamic exponent of the non-degenerate mode can be analytically predicted on the base of effective MCT, up to non-universal scaling factor. Our findings suggest the existence of novel universality classes with dynamical exponent $3/2$, appearing in long-lived hydrodynamic modes with equal characteristic velocities.

Anisotropic Landau-Lifshitz Model in Discrete Space-Time

We construct an integrable lattice model of classical interacting spins in discrete space-time, representing a discrete-time analogue of the lattice Landau-Lifshitz ferromagnet with uniaxial anisotropy. As an application we use this explicit discrete symplectic integration scheme to compute the spin Drude weight and diffusion constant as functions of anisotropy and chemical potential. We demonstrate qualitatively different behavior in the easy-axis and the easy-plane regimes in the non-magnetized sector. Upon approaching the isotropic point we also find an algebraic divergence of the diffusion constant, signaling a crossover to spin superdiffusion.

Universality in many-body driven systems with an umbilic point

We study stationary fluctuations of conserved slow modes in a two-lane model of hardcore particles which are expected to show universal behaviour. Specifically, we focus on the properties of fluctuations at a special umbilic point where the characteristic velocities coincide. At large space and time scales, fluctuations are described by a system of stochastic Burgers equations studied recently in [13]. Our data suggest coupling-dependent scaling functions and, even more surprisingly, coupling-dependent dynamical scaling exponents, distinct from KPZ scaling exponent typical for surface growth processes.

Hydrodynamic fluctuations of stochastic charged cellular automata

We study charge fluctuations of a family of stochastic charged cellular automata away from the deterministic single-file limit and obtain the exact typical charge probability distributions, known to be anomalous, using hydrodynamics. The cellular automata considered are examples of linearly degenerate systems where two distinct mechanisms of diffusion, namely normal and convective diffusion, coexist. Our formalism, based on macroscopic fluctuation theory, allows us to describe current fluctuations stemming from these two diffusive processes, and we expect it to be applicable to generic linearly degenerate systems. The derived probability distributions match the exact microscopic result and numerical simulations.

Quantum many-body spin ratchets

Introducing a class of SU(2) invariant quantum unitary circuits generating chiral transport, we examine the role of broken space-reflection and time-reversal symmetries on spin transport properties. Upon adjusting parameters of local unitary gates, the dynamics can be either chaotic or integrable. The latter corresponds to a generalization of the space-time discretized (Trotterized) higher-spin quantum Heisenberg chain. We demonstrate that breaking of space-reflection symmetry results in a drift in the dynamical spin susceptibility. Remarkably, we find a universal drift velocity given by a simple formula which, at zero average magnetization, depends only on the values of SU(2) Casimir invariants associated with local spins. In the integrable case, the drift velocity formula is confirmed analytically based on the exact solution of thermodynamic Bethe ansatz equations. Finally, by inspecting the large fluctuations of the time-integrated current between two halves of the system in stationary maximum-entropy states, we demonstrate violation of the Gallavotti-Cohen symmetry, implying that such states cannot be regarded as equilibrium ones. We show that the scaled cumulant generating function of the time-integrated current instead obeys a generalized fluctuation relation.

Fluctuations of stochastic charged cellular automata

We obtain the exact full counting statistics of a cellular automaton with freely propagating vacancies and charged particles that are stochastically scattered or transmitted upon collision by identifying the problem as a colored stochastic six-vertex model with one inert color. Typical charge current fluctuation at vanishing net charge follow a one-parameter distribution that interpolates between the distribution of the charged single-file class in the limit of pure reflection and a Gaussian distribution in the limit of pure transmission.

Integrable fishnet circuits and Brownian solitons

We introduce classical many-body dynamics on a one-dimensional lattice comprising local two-body maps arranged on discrete space-time mesh that serve as discretizations of Hamiltonian dynamics with arbitrarily time-varying coupling constants. Time evolution is generated by passing an auxiliary degree of freedom along the lattice, resulting in a `fishnet' circuit structure. We construct integrable circuits consisting of Yang-Baxter maps and demonstrate their general properties, using the Toda and anisotropic Landau-Lifschitz models as examples. Upon stochastically rescaling time, the dynamics is dominated by fluctuations and we observe solitons undergoing Brownian motion.

Anomalous current fluctuations from Euler hydrodynamics

We consider the hydrodynamic origin of anomalous current fluctuations in a family of stochastic charged cellular automata. Using ballistic macroscopic fluctuation theory, we study both typical and large fluctuations of the charge current and reproduce microscopic results which are available for the deterministic single-file limit of the models. Our results indicate that in general initial fluctuations propagated by Euler equations fully characterize both scales of anomalous fluctuations. For stochastic dynamics, we find an additional contribution to typical fluctuations and conjecture the functional form of the typical probability distribution, which we confirm by numerical simulations.

Efficient computation of cumulant evolution and full counting statistics: application to infinite temperature quantum spin chains

We propose a numerical method to efficiently compute quantum generating functions (QGF) for a wide class of observables in one-dimensional quantum systems at high temperature. We obtain high-accuracy estimates for the cumulants and reconstruct full counting statistics from the QGF. We demonstrate its potential on spin $S=1/2$ anisotropic Heisenberg chain, where we can reach time scales hitherto inaccessible to state-of-the-art classical and quantum simulations. Our results challenge the conjecture of the Kardar--Parisi--Zhang universality for isotropic integrable quantum spin chains.

Landau-Lifschitz magnets: exact thermodynamics and transport

The classical Landau--Lifshitz equation -- the simplest model of a ferromagnet -- provides an archetypal example for studying transport phenomena. In one-spatial dimension, integrability enables the classification of the spectrum of linear and nonlinear modes. An exact characterization of finite-temperature thermodynamics and transport has nonetheless remained elusive. We present an exact description of thermodynamic equilibrium states in terms of interacting modes. This is achieved by retrieving the classical Landau--Lifschitz model through the semiclassical limit of the integrable quantum spin-$S$ anisotropic Heisenberg chain at the level of the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz description. In the axial regime, the mode spectrum comprises solitons with unconventional statistics, whereas in the planar regime we additionally find two special types of modes of radiative and solitonic type. The obtained framework paves the way for analytical study of unconventional transport properties: as an example we study the finite-temperature spin Drude weight, finding excellent agreement with Monte Carlo simulations.

Single-file dynamics with general charge measures

We study charge fluctuations in single-file dynamics with general charge measures. The exact finite-time distribution of charge fluctuations is obtained in terms of a dressing transformation acting on the finite-time distribution of particle fluctuations. The transformation is mapped to a simple substitution rule for corresponding full-counting statistics. By taking the asymptotics of the dressing transformation we analyze typical and large scale charge fluctuations. Typical charge fluctuations in equilibrium states with vanishing mean charge are anomalous while large charge fluctuations undergo first and second order dynamical phase transitions out of equilibrium.

Universal anomalous fluctuations in charged single-file systems

Introducing a general class of one-dimensional single-file systems (meaning that particle crossings are prohibited) of interacting hardcore particles with internal degrees of freedom (called charge), we exhibit a novel type of dynamical universality reflected in anomalous statistical properties of macroscopic fluctuating observables such as charge transfer. We find that stringent dynamical constraints lead to universal anomalous statistics of cumulative charge currents manifested both on the timescale characteristic of typical fluctuations and also in the rate function describing rare events. By computing the full counting statistics of net transferred charge between two extended subsystems, we establish a number of unorthodox dynamical properties in an analytic fashion. Most prominently, typical fluctuations in equilibrium are governed by a universal distribution that markedly deviates from the expected Gaussian statistics, whereas large fluctuations are described by an exotic large-deviation rate function featuring an exceptional triple critical point. Far from equilibrium, competition between dynamical phases leads to dynamical phase transitions of first and second order and spontaneous breaking of fluctuation symmetry of the univariate charge large-deviation function. The rich phenomenology of the outlined dynamical universality is exemplified on an exactly solvable classical cellular automaton of charged hardcore particles. We determine the dynamical phase diagram in the framework of Lee-Yang's theory of phase transitions and exhibit a hyper-dimensional diagram of distinct dynamical regimes. Our findings lead us to conclude that the conventional classification of dynamical universality classes based on the algebraic dynamical exponents and asymptotic scaling functions that characterize hydrodynamic relaxation of the dynamical structure factor is incomplete and calls for refinement.

Dynamical criticality of magnetization transfer in integrable spin chains

Recent studies have found that fluctuations of magnetization transfer in integrable spin chains violate the central limit property. Here we revisit the problem of anomalous counting statistics in the Landau-Lifshitz field theory by specializing to two distinct anomalous regimes featuring a dynamical critical point. By performing optimized numerical simulations using an integrable space-time discretization we extract the algebraic growth exponents of time-dependent cumulants which attain their threshold values. The distinctly non-Gaussian statistics of magnetization transfer in the easy-axis regime is found to converge towards the universal distribution of charged single-file systems. At the isotropic point we infer a weakly non-Gaussian distribution, corroborating the view that superdiffusive spin transport in integrable spin chains does not belong to any known dynamical universality class.

Exact anomalous current fluctuations in a deterministic interacting model

We analytically compute the full counting statistics of charge transfer in a classical automaton of interacting charged particles. Deriving a closed-form expression for the moment generating function with respect to a stationary equilibrium state, we employ asymptotic analysis to infer the structure of charge current fluctuations for a continuous range of timescales. The solution exhibits several unorthodox features. Most prominently, on the timescale of typical fluctuations the probability distribution of the integrated charge current in a stationary ensemble without bias is distinctly non-Gaussian despite diffusive behavior of dynamical charge susceptibility. While inducing a charge imbalance is enough to recover Gaussian fluctuations, we find that higher cumulants grow indefinitely in time with different exponents, implying singular scaled cumulants. We associate this phenomenon with the lack of a regularity condition on moment generating functions and the onset of a dynamical critical point. In effect, the scaled cumulant generating function does not, irrespectively of charge bias, represent a faithful generating function of the scaled cumulants, yet the associated Legendre dual yields the correct large-deviation rate function. Our findings hint at novel types of dynamical universality classes in deterministic many-body systems.

Absence of Normal Fluctuations in an Integrable Magnet

We investigate dynamical fluctuations of transferred magnetization in the one-dimensional lattice Landau--Lifshitz magnet with uniaxial anisotropy, representing an emblematic model of interacting spins. We demonstrate that the structure of fluctuations in thermal equilibrium depends radically on the characteristic dynamical scale. In the ballistic regime, typical fluctuations are found to follow a normal distribution and scaled cumulants are finite. In stark contrast, on the diffusive and superdiffusive timescales, relevant respectively for the easy-axis and isotropic magnet at vanishing total magnetization, typical fluctuations are no longer Gaussian and, remarkably, scaled cumulants are divergent. The observed anomalous features disappear upon breaking integrability, suggesting that the absence of normal fluctuations is intimately tied to the presence of soliton modes. In a nonequilibrium setting of the isotropic magnet with weakly polarized step-profile initial state we find a slow drift of dynamical exponent from the superdiffusive towards the diffusive value.

Undular diffusion in nonlinear sigma models

We discuss general features of charge transport in non-relativistic classical field theories invariant under non-abelian unitary Lie groups by examining the full structure of two-point dynamical correlation functions in grand-canonical ensembles at finite charge densities (polarized ensembles). Upon explicit breaking of non-abelian symmetry, two distinct transport laws characterized by dynamical exponent $z=2$ arise. While in the unbroken symmetry sector the Cartan fields exhibit normal diffusion, the transversal sectors governed by the nonlinear analogues of Goldstone modes disclose an unconventional law of diffusion characterized by a complex diffusion constant and undulating patterns in the spatiotemporal correlation profiles. In the limit of strong polarization, one retrieves the imaginary-time diffusion for uncoupled linear Goldstone modes, whereas for weak polarizations the imaginary component of the diffusion constant becomes small. In models of higher rank symmetry, we prove absence of dynamical correlations among distinct transversal sectors.

Spectral energy analysis of bulk three-dimensional active nematic turbulence

We perform energy spectrum analysis of the active turbulence in 3D bulk active nematic using continuum numerical modelling. Specifically, we calculate the spectra of two main energy contributions---kinetic energy and nematic elastic energy---and combine this with the geometrical analysis of the nematic order and flow fields, based on direct defect tracking and calculation of autocorrelations. We show that the active nematic elastic energy is concentrated at scales corresponding to the effective defect-to-defect separation, scaling with activity as $\simζ^{0.5}$, whereas the kinetic energy is largest at somewhat larger scales of typically several 100 nematic correlation lengths. Nematic biaxiallity is shown to have no role in active turbulence at most of length scales, but can affect the nematic elastic energy by an order of magnitude at scales of active defect core size. The effect of an external aligning field on the 3D active turbulence is explored, showing a transition from an effective active turbulent to an aligned regime. The work is aimed to provide a contribution towards understanding active turbulence in general three-dimensions, from the perspective of main energy-relevant mechanisms at different length scales of the system.
