Observation of Dicke Superradiance for Two Artificial Atoms in a Cavity with High Decay Rate

An individual excited two level system decays to its ground state by emitting a single photon in a process known as spontaneous emission. In accordance with quantum theory the probability of detecting the emitted photon decreases exponentially with the time passed since the excitation of the two level system. In 1954 Dicke first considered the more subtle situation in which two emitters decay in close proximity to each other. He argued that the emission dynamics of a single two level system is altered by the presence of a second one, even if it is in its ground state. Here, we present a close to ideal realization of Dicke's original two-spin Gedankenexperiment, using a system of two individually controllable superconducting qubits weakly coupled to a microwave cavity with a fast decay rate. The two-emitter case of superradiance is explicitly demonstrated both in time-resolved measurements of the emitted power and by fully reconstructing the density matrix of the emitted field in the photon number basis.

Geometric phases in superconducting qubits beyond the two-level-approximation

Geometric phases, which accompany the evolution of a quantum system and depend only on its trajectory in state space, are commonly studied in two-level systems. Here, however, we study the adiabatic geometric phase in a weakly anharmonic and strongly driven multi-level system, realised as a superconducting transmon-type circuit. We measure the contribution of the second excited state to the two-level geometric phase and find good agreement with theory treating higher energy levels perturbatively. By changing the evolution time, we confirm the independence of the geometric phase of time and explore the validity of the adiabatic approximation at the transition to the non-adiabatic regime.

Ultrastrong coupling regime of cavity QED with phase-biased flux qubits

We theoretically study a circuit QED architecture based on a superconducting flux qubit directly coupled to the center conductor of a coplanar waveguide transmission-line resonator. As already shown experimentally [Abdumalikov et al. Phys. Rev. B 78, 180502 (2008)], the strong coupling regime of cavity QED can readily be achieved by optimizing the local inductance of the resonator in the vicinity of the qubit. In addition to yielding stronger coupling with respect to other proposals for flux qubit based circuit QED, this approach leads to a qubit-resonator coupling strength g which does not scale as the area of the qubit but is proportional to the total inductance shared between the resonator and the qubit. Strong coupling can thus be attained while still minimizing sensitivity to flux noise. Finally, we show that by taking advantage of the the large kinetic inductance of a Josephson junction in the center conductor of the resonator can lead to coupling energies of several tens of percent of the resonator frequency, reaching the ultrastrong coupling regime of cavity QED where the rotating-wave approximation breaks down. This should allow an on-chip implementation of the E x B Jahn-Teller model.

Is relaxation correlated in superconducting qubits?

We consider coupled quantum two-state systems (qubits) exposed to a global relaxation process. The global relaxation refers to the assumption that qubits are coupled to the same quantum bath with approximately equal strengths, appropriate for long-wavelength environmental fluctuations. We show that interactions do not spoil the picture of Dicke's subradiant and superradiant states where quantum interference effects lead to striking deviations from the independent relaxation picture. Remarkably, the system possess a stable entangled state and a state decaying faster than single qubit excitations. We propose a scheme how these effects can be experimentally accessed in superconducting flux qubits and, possibly, used in constructing long-lived entangled states.

Nonlocal electrodynamics of long ultra-narrow Josephson junctions: Experiment and theory

We experimentally and theoretically investigate electromagnetic cavity modes in ultra-narrow Al-AlO$_x$-Al and Nb-AlO$_x$-Nb long Josephson junctions. Experiments show that the voltage spacing between the Fiske steps on the current-voltage characteristics of sub-$μ$m wide and several hundred $μ$m long Al-AlO$_x$-Al and Nb-AlO$_x$-Nb Josephson junctions increases when decreasing the width of a junction. This effect is explained by stray magnetic fields, which become important for narrow junctions. Theoretical estimates of the Fiske step voltage based on a nonlocal wave propagation equation are in good agreement with our experimental data. Using the nonlocal model, we determine the size and mass of a Josephson vortex by means of a variational approach, and relate vortex size to the experimentally measured critical magnetic field of the junction.
