Kondo behavior and conductance through $3d$ impurities in gold chains doped with oxygen

Combining ab initio calculations and effective models derived from them, we discuss the electronic structure of oxygen doped gold chains when one Au atom is replaced by any transition-metal atom of the $3d$ series. The effect of O doping is to bring extended Au $5d_{xz}$ and $5d_{yz}$ states to the Fermi level, which together with the Au states of zero angular momentum projection, lead to three possible channels for the screening of the magnetism of the impurity. For most 3d impurities the expected physics is similar to that of the underscreened Kondo model, with singular Fermi liquid behavior. For Fe and Co under a tetragonal crystal field introduced by leads, the system might display a non-Fermi liquid behavior. Ni and Cu impurities are described by a $S = 1$ two channel Kondo model and an SU(4) impurity Anderson model in the intermediate valence regime, respectively. In both cases, the system is a Fermi liquid, but the conductance shows some observable differences with the ordinary SU(2) Anderson model.

Kondo temperature when the Fermi level is near a step in the conduction density of states

The (111) surface of Cu, Ag and Au is characterized by a band of surface Shockley states, with constant density of states beginning slightly below the Fermi energy. These states as well as bulk states hybridize with magnetic impurities which can be placed above the surface. We calculate the characteristic low-temperature energy scale, the Kondo temperature $T_K$ of the impurity Anderson model, as the bottom of the conduction band $D_s$ crosses the Fermi energy $ε_F$. We find simple power laws $T_K \simeq |D_s-ε_F|^η$, where $η$ depends on the sign of $D_s-ε_F$, the ratio between surface and bulk hybridizations with the impurity $Δ_s/Δ_b$ and the ratio between on-site and Coulomb energy $E_d/U$ in the model.

Many-body dynamics of the decay of excitons of different charges in a quantum dot

We calculate the photoluminescence spectrum of a single semiconductor quantum dot strongly coupled to a continuum as a function of light frequency, gate voltage, and magnetic field. The spectrum is dominated by the recombination of several excitonic states which can be considered as quantum quenchs in which the many-body nature of the system is suddenly changed between initial and final states. This is associated with an Anderson orthogonality catastrophe with a power-law singularity at the threshold. We explain the main features observed experimentally in the region of stability of the trion $X^-$, the neutral exciton $X^0$ and the gate voltage induced transition between them.

Replicas of the Kondo peak due to electron-vibration interaction in molecular transport properties

The low temperature properties of single level molecular quantum dots including both, electron-electron and electron-vibration interactions, are theoretically investigated. The calculated differential conductance in the Kondo regime exhibits not only the zero bias anomaly but also side peaks located at bias voltages which coincide with multiples of the energy of vibronic mode $V \sim \hbarΩ/e$. We obtain that the evolution with temperature of the two main satellite conductance peaks follows the corresponding one of the Kondo peak when $\hbarΩ\gg k_B T_K$, being $ T_K$ the Kondo temperature, in agreement with recent transport measurements in molecular junctions. However, we find that this is no longer valid when $ \hbarΩ$ is of the order of a few times $k_B T_K$.

Scaling of conductance through quantum dots with magnetic field

Using different techniques, and Fermi-liquid relationships, we calculate the variation with applied magnetic field (up to second order) of the zero-temperature equilibrium conductance through a quantum dot described by the impurity Anderson model. We focus on the strong-coupling limit $U \gg Δ$ where $U$ is the Coulomb repulsion and $Δ$ is half the resonant-level width, and consider several values of the dot level energy $E_d$, ranging from the Kondo regime $ε_F-E_d \gg Δ$ to the intermediate-valence regime $ε_F-E_d \sim Δ$, where $ε_F$ is the Fermi energy. We have mainly used density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) and numerical renormalization group (NRG) combined with renormalized perturbation theory (RPT). Results for the dot occupancy and magnetic susceptibility from DMRG and NRG+RPT are compared with the corresponding Bethe ansatz results for $U \rightarrow \infty$, showing an excellent agreement once $E_d$ is renormalized by a constant Haldane shift. For $U < 3 Δ$ a simple perturbative approach in $U$ agrees very well with the other methods. The conductance decreases with applied magnetic field for dot occupancies $n_d \sim 1$ and increases for $n_d \sim 0.5$ or $n_d \sim 1.5$ regardless of the value of $U$. We also relate the energy scale for the magnetic-field dependence of the conductance with the width of low energy peak in the spectral density of the dot.

Selfconsistent hybridization expansions for static properties of the Anderson impurity model

By means of a projector-operator formalism we derive an approximation based on a self consistent hybridization expansion to study the ground state properties of the Anderson Impurity model. We applied the approximation to the general case of finite Coulomb repulsion $U$, extending previous work with the same formalism in the infinite-$U$ case. The treatment provides a very accurate calculation of the ground state energy and their related zero temperature properties in the case in which $U$ is large enough, but still finite, as compared with the rest of energy scales involved in the model. The results for the valence of the impurity are compared with exact results that we obtain from equations derived using the Bethe ansatz and with a perturbative approach. The magnetization and magnetic susceptibility is also compared with Bethe ansatz results. In order to do this comparison, we also show how to regularize the Bethe ansatz integral equations necessary to calculate the impurity valence, for arbitrary values of the parameters.

Restoring the SU(4) Kondo regime in a double quantum dot system

We calculate the spectral density and occupations of a system of two capacitively coupled quantum dots, each one connected to its own pair of conducting leads, in a regime of parameters in which the total coupling to the leads for each dot $Γ_i$ are different. The system has been used recently to perform pseudospin spectroscopy by controlling independently the voltages of the four leads. For an odd number of electrons in the system, $Γ_1=Γ_2$, equal dot levels $E_1=E_2$ and sufficiently large interdot repulsion $U_{12}$ the system lies in the SU(4) symmetric point of spin and pseudospin degeneracy in the Kondo regime. In the more realistic case $Γ_1 \neq Γ_2$, pseudospin degeneracy is broken and the symmetry is reduced to SU(2). Nevertheless we find that the essential features of the SU(4) symmetric case are recovered by appropriately tuning the level difference $δ=E_2-E_1$. The system behaves as an SU(4) Kondo one at low energies. Our results are relevant for experiments which look for signatures of SU(4) symmetry in the Kondo regime of similar systems.

Kondo physics in a Ni impurity embedded in O-doped Au chains

By means of ab initio calculations we study the effect of O-doping of Au chains containing a nanocontact represented by a Ni atom as a magnetic impurity. In contrast to pure Au chains, we find that with a minimun O-doping the $5d_{xz,yz}$ states of Au are pushed up, crossing the Fermi level. We also find that for certain O configurations, the Ni atom has two holes in the degenerate $3d_{xz,yz}$ orbitals, forming a spin $S=1$ due to a large Hund interaction. The coupling between the $5d_{xz,yz}$ Au bands and the $3d_{xz,yz}$ of Ni states leads to a possible realization of a two-channel $S=1$ Kondo effect. While this kind of Kondo effect is commonly found in bulk systems, it is rarely observed in low dimensions. The estimated Kondo scale of the system lies within the present achievable experimental resolution in transport measurements. Another possible scenario for certain atomic configurations is that one of the holes resides in a $3d_{z^2}$ orbital, leading to a two-stage Kondo effect, the second one with SU(4) symmetry.

Impact of capacitance and tunneling asymmetries on Coulomb blockade edges and Kondo peaks in non-equilibrium transport through molecular quantum dots

We investigate theorerically the non-equilibrium transport through a molecular quantum dot as a function of gate and bias voltage, taking into account the typical situation in molecular electronics. In this respect, our study includes asymmetries both in the capacitances and tunneling rates to the source and drain electrodes, as well as an infinitely large charging energy on the molecule. Our calculations are based on the out-of-equilibrium Non-Crossing-Approximation (NCA), which is a reliable technique in the regime under consideration. We find that Coulomb blockade edges and Kondo peaks display strong renormalization in their width and intensity as a function of these asymmetries, and that basic expectations from Coulomb blockade theory must be taken with care in general, expecially when Kondo physics is at play. In order to help comparison of theory to experiments, we also propose a simple phenomenological model which reproduces semi-quantitatively the Coulomb blockade edges that were numerically computed from the NCA in all regimes of parameters.

Valence fluctuations in a lattice of magnetic molecules: application to iron(II) phtalocyanine molecules on Au(111)

We study theoretically a square lattice of the organometallic Kondo adsorbate iron(II) phtalocyanine (FePc) deposited on top of Au(111), motivated by recent scanning tunneling microscopy experiments. We describe the system by means of an effective Hubbard-Anderson model, where each molecule has degenerate effective $d-$orbitals with $xz$ and $yz$ symmetry, which we solve for arbitrary occupation and arbitrary on-site repulsion $U$. To that end, we introduce a generalized slave-boson mean-field approximation (SBMFA) which correctly describes both the non-interacting limit (NIL) $U=0$ and the strongly-interacting limit $U \rightarrow \infty$, where our formalism reproduces the correct value of the Kondo temperature for an isolated FePc molecule. Our results indicate that while the isolated molecule can be described by an SU(4) Anderson model in the Kondo regime, the case of the square lattice corresponds to the intermediate-valence regime, with a total occupation of nearly 1.65 holes in the FePc molecular orbitals. Our results have important implications for the physical interpretation of the experiment.

Comment on "Conductance scaling in Kondo-correlated quantum dots: Role of level asymmetry and charging energy"

In a recent work [L. Merker, S. Kirchner, E. Munoz, and T. A. Costi, Phys. Rev. B 87, 165132 (2013)], the authors compared results of numerical renormalization group and a perturbative approach for the dependence on temperature T and magnetic field B of the conductance through a quantum dot described by the impurity Anderson model, for small T and B. We show that the equation used to extract the dependence on B from NRG results is incorrect out of the particle-hole symmetric case. As a consequence, in the Kondo regime, the correct NRG results have a weaker dependence on B and the disagreement between both approaches increase.

Non-Fermi liquid behaviour in non-equilibrium transport through Co doped Au chains connected to four-fold symmetric leads

We calculate the differential conductance as a function of temperature and bias voltage, $G(T,V)$, through Au monoatomic chains with a substitutional Co atom as a magnetic impurity, connected to a four-fold symmetric lead. The system was recently proposed as a possible scenario for observation of the overscreened Kondo physics. Stretching the chain, the system could be tuned through a quantum critical point (QCP) with three different regimes, overscreened, underscreened and non Kondo phases. We present calculations of the impurity spectral function by using the numerical renormalization group (NRG) for the three different regimes characterizing the QCP. Non trivial behaviour of the spectral function is reported near the QCP. Comparison with results using the non crossing approximation (NCA), shows that the latter is reliable in the overscreened regime, when the anisotropy is larger than the Kondo temperature. For these parameters, which correspond to realistic previous estimates, $G(T,V)$ calculated within NCA exhibits clear signatures of the non-Fermi liquid behaviour within the overscreened regime.

Nonequilibrium self-energies, Ng approach and heat current of a nanodevice for small bias voltage and temperature

Using non-equilibrium renormalized perturbation theory to second order in the renormalized Coulomb repulsion, we calculate the lesser $Σ^<$ and and greater $Σ^>$ self-energies of the impurity Anderson model, which describes the current through a quantum dot, in the general asymmetric case. While in general a numerical integration is required to evaluate the perturbative result, we derive an analytical approximation for small frequency $ω$, bias voltage $V$ and temperature $T$ which is exact to total second order in these quantities. The approximation is valid when the corresponding energies $\hbar ω$, $eV$ and $k_B T$ are small compared to $k_B T_K$, where $T_K$ is the Kondo temperature. The result of the numerical integration is compared with the analytical one and with Ng approximation, in which $Σ^<$ and $Σ^>$ are assumed proportional to the retarded self-energy $Σ^r$ times an average Fermi function. While it fails at $T=0$ for $\hbar|ω| \lesssim eV$ we find that the Ng approximation is excellent for $k_B T > eV/2$ and improves for asymmetric coupling to the leads. Even at $T=0$, the effect of the Ng approximation on the total occupation at the dot is very small. The dependence on $ω$ and $V$ are discussed in comparison with a Ward identity that is fulfilled by the three approaches. We also calculate the heat currents between the dot and any of the leads at finite bias voltage. One of the heat currents changes sign with the applied bias voltage at finite temperature.

Transport through side-coupled multilevel double quantum dots in the Kondo regime

We analyze the transport properties of a double quantum dot device in the side-coupled configuration. A small quantum dot (QD), having a single relevant electronic level, is coupled to source and drain electrodes. A larger QD, whose multilevel nature is considered, is tunnel-coupled to the small QD. A Fermi liquid analysis shows that the low temperature conductance of the device is determined by the total electronic occupation of the double QD. When the small dot is in the Kondo regime, an even number of electrons in the large dot leads to a conductance that reaches the unitary limit, while for an odd number of electrons a two stage Kondo effect is observed and the conductance is strongly suppressed. The Kondo temperature of the second stage Kondo effect is strongly affected by the multilevel structure of the large QD. For increasing level spacing, a crossover from a large Kondo temperature regime to a small Kondo temperature regime is obtained when the level spacing becomes of the order of the large Kondo temperature.

Effects of homogenous broadening on the Rabi splitting in micropillar cavities with strong light-matter interaction

We solve the low-energy part of the spectrum of a model that describes a cavity mode strongly coupled to an exciton, and both modes coupled to continua of bosonic excitations which give rise to homogeneous broadenig. The spectral density of the cavity modes in the low-energy manifold agrees with measured photoluminiscense spectra. We suggest fitting these spectra with a sum of two asymmetric Lorentzians.

Interpretation of experimental results on Kondo systems with crystal field

We present a simple approach to calculate the thermodynamic properties of single Kondo impurities including orbital degeneracy and crystal field effects (CFE) by extending a previous proposal by K. D. Schotte and U. Schotte [Physics Lett. A 55, 38 (1975)]. Comparison with exact solutions for the specific heat of a quartet ground state split into two doublets shows deviations below $10\%$ in absence of CFE and a quantitative agreement for moderate or large CFE. As an application, we fit the measured specific heat of the compounds CeCu$_2$Ge$_2$, CePd$_{3}$Si$_{0.3}$, CePdAl, CePt, Yb$_2$Pd$_2$Sn and YbCo$_2$Zn$_{20}$. The agreement between theory and experiment is very good or excellent depending on the compound, except at very low temperatures due to the presence of magnetic correlations (not accounted in the model).

Orbital Kondo spectroscopy in a double quantum dot system

We calculate the nonequilibrium conductance of a system of two capacitively coupled quantum dots, each one connected to its own pair of conducting leads. The system has been used recently to perform pseudospin spectroscopy by controlling independently the voltages of the four leads. The pseudospin is defined by the orbital occupation of one or the other dot. Starting from the SU(4) symmetric point of spin and pseudospin degeneracy in the Kondo regime, for an odd number of electrons in the system, we show how the conductance through each dot varies as the symmetry is reduced to SU(2) by a pseudo-Zeeman splitting, and as bias voltages are applied to any of the dots. We analize the expected behavior of the system in general, and predict characteristic fingerprint features of the SU(4) to SU(2) crossover that have not been observed so far.
