Decoherence Dynamics in Low-Dimensional Cold Atom Interferometers

We report on a study of the dynamics of decoherence of a matter-wave interferometer, consisting of a pair of low-dimensional cold atom condensates at finite temperature. We identify two distinct regimes in the time dependence of the coherence factor of the interferometer: quantum and classical. Explicit analytical results are obtained in both regimes. In particular, in the two-dimensional (2D) case in the classical (long time) regime, we find that the dynamics of decoherence is universal, exhibiting a power-law decay with an exponent, proportional to the ratio of the temperature to the Kosterlitz-Thouless temperature of a single 2D condensate. In the one-dimensional (1D) case in the classical regime we find a universal nonanalytic time dependence of decoherence, which is a consequence of the nonhydrodynamic nature of damping in 1D liquids.

A striped supersolid phase and the search for deconfined quantum criticality in hard-core bosons on the triangular lattice

Using large-scale quantum Monte Carlo simulations we study bosons hopping on a triangular lattice with nearest (V) and next-nearest (V') neighbor repulsive interactions. In the limit where V=0 but V' is large, we find an example of an unusual period-three striped supersolid state that is stable at 1/2-filling. We discuss the relationship of this state to others on the rich ground-state phase diagram, which include a previously-discovered nearest-neighbor supersolid, a uniform superfluid, as well as several Mott insulating phases. We study several superfluid- and supersolid-to-Mott phase transitions, including one proposed by a recent phenomenological dual vortex field theory as a candidate for an exotic deconfined quantum critical point. We find no examples of unconventional quantum criticality among any of the interesting phase transitions in the model.

Boundary conditions for spin diffusion

We develop a general scheme of deriving boundary conditions for spin-charge coupled transport in disordered systems with spin-orbit interactions. To illustrate the application of the method, we explicitly derive boundary conditions for spin diffusion in the Rashba model. Due to the surface spin precession, the boundary conditions are non-trivial and contain terms, which couple different components of the spin density. We argue that boundary conditions and the corresponding electric-field-induced spin accumulation generally depend on the nature of the boundary and therefore the spin Hall effect in a spin-orbit coupled system can be viewed as a non-universal edge phenomenon.

Vortex-Peierls States in Optical Lattices

We show that vortices, induced in cold atom superfluids in optical lattices, may order in a novel vortex-Peierls ground state. In such a state vortices do not form a simple lattice but arrange themselves in clusters, within which the vortices are partially delocalized, tunneling between classically degenerate configurations. We demonstrate that this exotic quantum many-body state is selected by an order-from-disorder mechanism for a special combination of the vortex filling and lattice geometry that has a macroscopic number of classically degenerate ground states.

Supersolid Order from Disorder: Hard-Core Bosons on the Triangular Lattice

We study the interplay of Mott localization, geometric frustration, and superfluidity for hard-core bosons with nearest-neighbor repulsion on the triangular lattice. For this model at half-filling, we demonstrate that superfluidity survives for arbitrarily large repulsion, and that diagonal solid order emerges in the strongly correlated regime from an order-by-disorder mechanism. This is thus an unusual example of a stable supersolid phase of hard-core lattice bosons at a commensurate filling.

Superfluid-Insulator Transitions on the Triangular Lattice

We report on a phenomenological study of superfluid to Mott insulator transitions of bosons on the triangular lattice, focusing primarily on the interplay between Mott localization and geometrical charge frustration at 1/2-filling. A general dual vortex field theory is developed for arbitrary rational filling factors f, based on the appropriate projective symmetry group. At the simple non-frustrated density f=1/3, we uncover an example of a deconfined quantum critical point very similar to that found on the half-filled square lattice. Turning to f=1/2, the behavior is quite different. Here, we find that the low-energy action describing the Mott transition has an emergent nonabelian SU(2)\times U(1) symmetry, not present at the microscopic level. This large nonabelian symmetry is directly related to the frustration-induced quasi-degeneracy between many charge-ordered states not related by microscopic symmetries. Through this ``pseudospin'' SU(2)symmetry, the charged excitations in the insulator close to the Mott transition develop a skyrmion-like character. This leads to an understanding of the recently discovered supersolid phase of the triangular lattice XXZ model (cond-mat/0505258, cond-mat/0505257, cond-mat/0505298) as a ``partially melted'' Mott insulator. The latter picture naturally explains a number of puzzling numerical observations of the properties of this supersolid. Moreover, we predict that the nearby quantum phase transition from this supersolid to the Mott insulator is in the recently-discovered non-compact CP^1 critical universality class (PRB 70, 075104 (2004)). A description of a broad range of other Mott and supersolid states, and a diverse set of quantum critical points between them, is also provided.

Theory of Spin-Charge Coupled Transport in a Two-Dimensional Electron Gas with Rashba Spin-Orbit Interactions

We use microscopic linear response theory to derive a set of equations that provide a complete description of coupled spin and charge diffusive transport in a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) with the Rashba spin-orbit (SO) interaction. These equations capture a number of interrelated effects including spin accumulation and diffusion, Dyakonov-Perel spin relaxation, magnetoelectric, and spin-galvanic effects. They can be used under very general circumstances to model transport experiments in 2DEG systems that involve either electrical or optical spin injection. We comment on the relationship between these equations and the exact spin and charge density operator equations of motion. As an example of the application of our equations, we consider a simple electrical spin injection experiment and show that a voltage will develop between two ferromagnetic contacts if a spin-polarized current is injected into a 2DEG, that depends on the relative magnetization orientation of the contacts. This voltage is present even when the separation between the contacts is larger than the spin diffusion length.

Spin Relaxation in a Two-Dimensional Electron Gas in a Perpendicular Magnetic Field

We consider the problem of spin relaxation in a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) in a perpendicular magnetic field. We assume that the spin relaxation is induced by the Rashba spin-orbit (SO) interaction, which appears due to the inversion asymmetry of the confining potential. Our solution is based on a microscopic evaluation of the spin density response function of the 2DEG with impurities and SO interaction. We derive explicit expressions for the transverse and longitudinal spin relaxation rates. Our analysis shows, in particular, that the spin relaxation rates exhibit {\it magnetoquantum oscillations}, which are analogous to the Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations of the electrical resistivity. These oscillations can be observed, for example, in time-resolved optical experiments.

Anomalous Hall Effect in Ferromagnetic Semiconductors in the Hopping Transport Regime

We present a theory of the Anomalous Hall Effect (AHE) in ferromagnetic (Ga,Mn)As in the regime when conduction is due to phonon-assisted hopping of holes between localized states in the impurity band. We show that the microscopic origin of the anomalous Hall conductivity in this system can be attributed to a phase that a hole gains when hopping around closed-loop paths in the presence of spin-orbit interactions and background magnetization of the localized Mn moments. Mapping the problem to a random resistor network, we derive an analytic expression for the macroscopic anomalous Hall conductivity $σ_{xy}^{AH}$. We show that $σ_{xy}^{AH}$ is proportional to the first derivative of the density of states $\varrho(ε)$ and thus can be expected to change sign as a function of impurity band filling. We also show that $σ_{xy}^{AH}$ depends on temperature as the longitudinal conductivity $σ_{xx}$ within logarithmic accuracy.

Lattice Pseudospin Model for $ν=1$ Quantum Hall Bilayers

We present a new theoretical approach to the study of $ν=1$ quantum Hall bilayer that is based on a systematic mapping of the microscopic Hamiltonian to an anisotropic SU(4) spin model on a lattice. To study the properties of this model we generalize the Heisenberg model Schwinger boson mean field theory (SBMFT) of Arovas and Auerbach to spin models with anisotropy. We calculate the temperature dependence of experimentally observable quantities, including the spin magnetization, and the differential interlayer capacitance. Our theory represents a substantial improvement over the conventional Hartree-Fock picture which neglects quantum and thermal fluctuations, and has advantages over long-wavelength effective models that fail to capture important microscopic physics at all realistic layer separations. The formalism we develop can be generalized to treat quantum Hall bilayers at filling factor $ν=2$.

$ν=2$ Bilayer Quantum Hall System in Tilted Magnetic Field

We report on a theoretical study of $ν=2$ bilayer quantum Hall systems with a magnetic field that has a component parallel to the layers. As in the $ν=1$ case, interlayer phase coherence is closely coupled to electron correlations and the Aharonov-Bohm phases introduced by a parallel magnetic field can have a strong influence on the ground state of the system. We find that response of a $ν=2$ system to a parallel field is more subtle than that of a $ν=1$ system because of the interplay between spin and layer degrees of freedom. There is no commensurate-incommensurate transition as the parallel field is increased. Instead, we find a new phase transition which can occur in fixed parallel field as the interlayer bias potential is varied. The transition is driven by the competition between canted antiferromagnetic order and interlayer phase coherence in the presence of the parallel field. We predict a strong singularity in the differential capacitance of the bilayer which can be used to detect the phase transition.

Theory of Ferromagnetism in Doped Excitonic Condensates

Nesting in a semimetal can lead to an excitonic insulator state with spontaneous coherence between conduction and valence bands and a gap for charged excitations. In this paper we present a theory of the ferromagnetic state that occurs when the density of electrons in the conduction band and holes in the valence band differ. We find an unexpectedly rich doping-field phase diagram and an unusual collective excitation spectrum that includes two gapless collective modes. We predict regions of doping and external field in which phase-separated condensates of electrons and holes with parallel spins and opposing spins coexist.

Correlations in Transmission of Light through a Disordered Amplifying Medium

The angular and frequency correlation functions of the transmission coefficient for light propagation through a strongly scattering amplifying medium are considered. It is found that just as in the case of an elastic scattering medium the correlation function consists of three terms. However, the structure of the terms is rather different. Angular correlation has a power-law decay and exhibits oscillations. There is no "memory effect" as in the case of an elastic medium. Interaction between diffusion modes is strongly enhanced near the lasing threshold. Frequency correlation scale decreases close to the lasing threshold. We also consider time correlations of the transmission in the case of nonstationary inhomogeneities. We find short- and long-range time correlations. The scale of the short-range correlation decreases, while the long-range correlation scale becomes infinite near the threshold.
