The Tunka-133 EAS Chrenkov array - status, first results and plans

The new EAS Cherenkov array Tunka-133 with about 1 km**2 geometric acceptance area is installed in the Tunka Valley (50 km from Lake Baikal). The array willpermit a detailed study of cosmic ray energy spectrum and mass composition in the energy range of 10**15 - 10**18 eV with uniform method. The array consistsof 19 clusters, each composed of 7 optical detectors with 20 cm PMTs. Since November 2008, the first 12 clusters are in operation, commissioning of the whole array is planned for September 2009 (At the time of submission of this paperto electronic arXiv(February 2010) the completed Tunka-133 array is already taking data). We describe the array construction and DAQ, preliminary results and plans for the future development: deployment of radio-antennas and muon detectors network.

Impact of high-energy hadron interactions on the atmospheric neutrino flux predictions

We study the influence of hadron interaction features on the high-energy atmospheric neutrino spectrum. The 1D calculation is performed with use of the known high-energy hadronic models, SIBYLL 2.1, QGSJET-II, Kimel and Mokhov, for the parameterizations of primary cosmic ray spectra issued from the measurement data. The results are compared with the Frejus data and AMANDA-II measurements as well as with other calculations. Sizable difference of the neutrino fluxes (up to the factor of 1.8 at 1 TeV) that are obtained with the SIBYLL and QGSJET-II appears to be rather unexpected keeping in mind the hadron and muon flux calculations in the same energy region.

High-energy cosmic ray fluxes in the Earth atmosphere: calculations vs experiments

A new calculation of the atmospheric fluxes of cosmic-ray hadrons and muons in the energy range 10-10^5 GeV has been performed for the set of hadron production models, EPOS 1.6, QGSJET II-03, SIBYLL 2.1, and others that are of interest to cosmic ray physicists. The fluxes of secondary cosmic rays at several levels in the atmosphere are computed using directly data of the ATIC-2, GAMMA experiments, and the model proposed recently by Zatsepin and Sokolskaya as well as the parameterization of the primary cosmic ray spectrum by Gaisser and Honda. The calculated energy spectra of the hadrons and muon flux as a function of zenith angle are compared with measurements as well as other calculations. The effect of uncertainties both in the primary cosmic ray flux and hadronic model predictions on the spectra of atmospheric hadrons and muons is considered.

Calculation of the atmospheric muon flux motivated by the ATIC-2 experiment

We calculate the cosmic ray muon flux at ground level using directly the primary cosmic ray spectrum and composition measured in the ATIC-2 balloon experiment. In order to extend the calculations to high energies, up to 100 TeV, we use the data of the GAMMA experiment as well as Zatsepin and Sokolskaya model. This model, supported by the ATIC-2 data, comprises contributions to the cosmic ray flux of three classes of astrophysical sources - the shocks from exploding stars, nova and supernova of different types. The muon flux computation is based on the method for solution of atmospheric hadron cascade equations in which rising total inelastic cross-sections of hadron-nuclear interactions as well as non-power-law character of the primary cosmic ray spectrum are taken into account. The calculated muon spectrum agrees well with measurements of L3+Cosmic and BESS-TeV, CAPRICE, Frejus, MACRO, LVD as well as other experiments.

Energy loss of muons and taus through inelastic scattering on nuclei

A hybrid model is used to describe the energy loss of very high-energy taus and muons in matter due to inelastic scattering on nuclei. The model involves soft and semihard photonuclear interactions as well as the deep inelastic scattering including the weak neutral current processes. For the lepton scattering on nuclei all important nuclear effects, the shadowing, anti-shadowing, EMC and the nucleon binding, were taken into account. Approximating formulas for the muon and tau energy loss portion by the inelastic scattering on nuclei in water are given for wide energy range up to $10^9$ GeV.

"Subthreshold" $e^+e^-$ pairs production on photon colliders

In this paper we consider the process of "subthreshold" electron-positron pairs creation in the region of laser conversion. The total number of positrons and their distribution are obtained. This phenomena is offered for use as a good test to examine nonlinear effects of quantum electrodynamics on TESLA.
