Study of the Fast X-Ray Transient XTE J1901+014 Based on INTEGRAL, RXTE and ROSAT Data

The source XTE J1901+014 discovered by the RXTE observatory during an intense outburst of hard radiation and classified as a fast X-ray transient is studied. The source's spectral characteristics in the quiescent state have been investigated for the first time both in the soft X-ray energy range (0.6-20 keV) based on ROSAT and RXTE data and in the hard energy range (>20 keV) based on INTEGRAL data. A timing analysis of the source's properties has revealed weak nonperiodic bursts of activity on time scales of several tens of seconds and two intense ($\sim$0.5-1 Crab) outbursts more than several hundred seconds in duration. Certain assumptions about the nature of the object under study are made.

INTEGRAL and RXTE observations of the fast X-ray transient XTEJ1901+014

We present results of spectral and timing analysis of the fast X-ray transient XTE J1901+014 based on data of the RXTE and INTEGRAL observatories. With the INTEGRAL/ISGRI the source was detected at a significance level of 20$σ$ with the persistent flux of $\sim$2.7 mCrab in a 17-100 keV energy band in 2003-2004 (during long observations of the Sagittarius arm region). We added the RXTE/PCA (3-20 keV) data obtained in 1998 to the INTEGRAL/ISGRI data to build the broadband spectrum of the source in a quiescent state. It was found that the spectrum can be well approximated by a simple powerlaw with a photon index of $\sim$2.15. From timing analysis we found short time scale aperiodic variations which can be connected with instabilities in the accretion flow.

Spectral analysis of X-ray pulsars with the INTEGRAL observatory

We studied spectra for 34 accretion-powered X-ray and one millisecond pulsars that were within the field of view of the INTEGRAL observatory over two years (December 2002 - January 2005) of its in-orbit operation and that were detected by its instruments at a statistically significant level (>8 sigma in the energy range 18-60 keV). There are seven recently discovered objects of this class among the pulsars studied: 2RXP J130159.6-635806, IGR/AX J16320-4751, IGR J16358-4726, AX J163904-4642, IGR J16465-4507, SAX/IGR J18027-2017 and AX J1841.0-0535. We analyze the evolution of spectral parameters as a function of the intensity of the sources and compare these with the results of previous studies.

V0332+53 in the outburst of 2004--2005: luminosity dependence of the cyclotron line and pulse profile

We present results of observations of the transient X-ray pulsar V0332+53 performed during a very powerful outburst in Dec, 2004 -- Feb, 2005 with the INTEGRAL and RXTE observatories in a wide (3-100 keV) energy band. A cyclotron resonance scattering line at an energy of ~26 keV has been detected in the source spectrum together with its two higher harmonics at ~50 and ~73 keV, respectively. We show that the energy of the line is not constant but linearly changes with the source luminosity. Strong pulse profile variations, especially near the cyclotron line, are revealed for different levels of the source intensity. We discuss the obtained results in terms of the theoretical models of X-ray pulsars.

Observations of the X-ray Burster MX 0836-42 by the INTEGRAL and RXTE Orbiting Observatories

We present the results of our study of the emission from the transient burster MX 0836-42 using its observations by the INTEGRAL and RXTE X-ray and gamma-ray observatories in the period 2003-2004. The source's broadband X-ray spectrum in the energy range 3-120 keV has been obtained and investigated for the first time. We have detected 39 X-ray bursts from this source. Their analysis shows that the maximum 3-20 keV flux varies significantly from burst to burst, F ~ (0.5-1.5)x10^{-8} erg cm^{-2} s^{-1}. Using the flux at the maximum of the brightest detected burst, we determined an upper limit for the distance to the source, D ~ 8 kpc.

Hard Spectra of X-Ray Pulsars from INTEGRAL Data

We have also obtained hard X-ray (> 20 keV) spectra for the accretion-powered pulsars A 0114+650, RX J0146.9+6121, AX J1820.5-1434, AX J1841.0-0535 and the millisecond pulsar XTE J1807-294 for the first time. We analyze the evolution of spectral parameters as a function of the intensity of the sources and compare these with the results of previous studies.

Long-Term INTEGRAL and RXTE Observations of the X-Ray Pulsar LMC X-4

We analyze the observations of the X-ray pulsar LMC X-4 performed by the INTEGRAL observatory and the All-Sky Monitor (ASM) of the RXTE observatory over a wide energy range. The observed hard X-ray flux from the source is shown to change by more than a factor of 50 (from ~70 mCrab in the high state to ~1.3 mCrab in the low state) on the time scale of the accretion-disk precession period, whose mean value for 1996-2004 was determined with a high accuracy, Pprec=30.275+/-0.004 days. In the low state, a flare about 10 h in duration was detected from the source; the flux from the source increased by more than a factor of 4 during this flare. The shape of the pulsar's broadband spectrum is essentially invariable with its intensity; no statistically significant features associated with the possible resonance cyclotron absorption line were found in the spectrum of the source.

Observations of the Transient X-ray Pulsar KS 1947+300 by the INTEGRAL and RXTE Observatories

We analyze the observations of the X-ray pulsar KS 1947+300 performed by the INTEGRAL and RXTE observatories over a wide (3-100 keV) X-ray energy range. The shape of the pulse profile was found to depend on the luminosity of the source. Based on the model of a magnetized neutron star, we study the characteristics of the pulsar using the change in its spin-up rate. We estimated the magnetic field strength of the pulsar and the distance to the binary.

Broadband Observations of the Transient X-ray Pulsar SAX J2103.5+4545

We investigated the optical, X-ray, and gamma-ray variability of the pulsar SAX J2103.5+4545. Our timing and spectral analyses of the X-ray and gamma-ray emissions from the source using RXTE and INTEGRAL data show that the shape of its spectrum in the energy range 3 -- 100 keV is virtually independent of its intensity and the orbital phase. Based on XMM-Newton data, we accurately (5 arcsec) localized the object and determined the optical counterpart in the binary. We placed upper limits on the variability of the latter in the R band and the H-alpha line on time scales of the orbital and pulse periods, respectively.

Hard X-ray view of the past activity of Sgr A* in a natural Compton mirror

We report the association of the recently discovered hard X-ray source IGR J17475-2822 with the giant molecular cloud Sgr B2 in the Galactic Center region. The broad band (3-200 keV) spectrum of the source constructed from data of different observatories strongly supports the idea that the X-ray emission of Sgr B2 is Compton scattered and reprocessed radiation emitted in the past by the Sgr A* source. We conclude that 300-400 years ago Sgr A* was a low luminosity (L ~ 1.5e39 erg/s at 2-200 keV) AGN with a characteristic hard X-ray spectrum (photon index Gamma ~ 1.8). We estimate the mass and iron abundance of the Sgr B2 scattering gas at 2e6 Msun (r/10pc)^2 and 1.9 solar, respectively (where r is the radius of the cloud).

Observations of the X-ray Pulsar GX 301-2 with the ART-P Telescope of the Granat Observatory

The variability of the X-ray flux from the pulsar GX 301-2 is analyzed by using data from the ART-P telescope of the Granat Observatory. The intensity variations with time scales of several thousand seconds are studied at various orbital phases. The high-state flux from the source exceeds its low-state flux by as much as a factor of 10. The hardness and spectrum of the source are shown to change greatly with its intensity. These intensity variations are most likely caused by substantial inhomogeneities in the stellar wind from the companion star.

Two Years of Observations of the X-ray Pulsar SMC X-1 with the ART-P Telescope onboard the Granat Observatory

We present the observations of the pulsar SMC X-1 with the ART-P telescope onboard the Granat observatory. We investigate the variability of the flux from the source on time scales of several tens of days. The intensity variation of the pulsar are shown to be consistent with the presence of a periodicity in the system with a characteristic time scale of $\sim61$ days. The precession of an inclined accretion disk, as indirectly confirmed by the absence of low-state pulsations, may be responsible for the observed variability. The spectrum of the source is well described by a power-law energy dependence of the photon flux density with a slope of $\sim1.5$ and an exponential cutoff at energies above $\sim14-18$ keV. We estimated the inclinations between the planes of the orbit and the accretion disk and the magnetic field of the neutron star.

INTEGRAL/IBIS survey of the Sagittarius Arm Tangent region: A source catalog

Analysis of 18-120 keV images of the Sagittarius Arm Tangent region (SATR) obtained by IBIS telescope onboard INTEGTRAL observatory during the spring of 2003 is performed. In the 18-60 keV energy range, 28 sources have been detected with a flux level above 1.4 mCrab. Of these sources, 16 were identified earlier as galactic X-ray binary systems, 3 as extragalactic objects, 2 as pulsars inside supernova remnants, and 7 has unknown nature. The analysis revealed the presence of three previously unknown sources. Fourteen sources show significant flux in the 60-120 keV energy range

RXTE observations of X-ray transients IGRJ17091-3624 and IGRJ18539+072

We present results of analysis of observations of two transient sources IGR J17091-3624 and IGR J18539+0727 in April 2003 with RXTE observatory. Obtained energy spectra of sources, and also power spectra of their flux variations give us a possibility to classify them as X-ray binary systems in low/hard spectral state. Parameters of power spectrum of IGR J18539+0727 indicates that this source is a black hole candidate.

Review of X-Ray Bursters in the Galactic Center Region

Results of observations of X-ray bursters in the Galactic Center region carried out with the RXTE observatory and the ART-P telescope on board GRANAT are presented. Eight X-ray bursters (A1742-294, SLX1744-299/300, GX3+1, GX354-0, SLX1732-304, 4U1724-307, KS1731-260) were revealed in this region during five series of observations which were performed with the ART-P telescope in 1990-1992 and more than 100 type I X-ray bursts from these sources were observed. For each of the sources we investigated in detail the recurrence times between bursts, the bursts time profiles and their dependence on the bursts flux, the spectral evolution of sources emission in the persistent state and during the bursts. Two bursters (SLX1732-304, 4U1724-307) located in the globular clusters Terzan 1 and 2, were investigated using the RXTE data as well.

X-ray Bursts from the Source A1742-294 in the Galactic-Center Region

We present results of observations of the X-ray burster A1742-294 near the Galactic center with the ART-P telescope onboard the Granat observatory. The shape of its persistent spectra was well described by the model of bremsstrahlung from optically thin plasma, and it had remained essentially unchanged over $\sim2.5$ years of observations. We show that the mean interval between X-ray bursts from the source is several times shorter than assumed previously, and that the burst profile itself depends on the flux during the burst. We analyze in detail the strong X-ray burst detected from this source on October 18, 1990, and trace the evolution of its luminosity and radiation temperature.
