Instability of the engineered dark state in two-band fermions under number-conserving dissipative dynamics

Correlated quantum many-body states can be created and controlled by the dissipative protocols. Among these, particle number-conserving protocols are particularly appealing due to their ability to stabilize topologically nontrivial phases. Is there any fundamental limitation to their performance? We address this question by examining a general class of models involving a two-band fermion system subjected to dissipation designed to transfer fermions from the upper band to the lower band. By construction, these models have a guaranteed steady state - a dark state - with a completely filled lower band and an empty upper band. In the limit of weak dissipation, we derive equations governing the long-wavelength and long-time dynamics of the fermion densities and analyze them numerically. These equations belong to the Fisher-Kolmogorov-Petrovsky-Piskunov reaction-diffusion universality class. Our analysis reveals that the engineered dark state is generically unstable, giving way to a new steady state with a finite density of particles in the upper band. We also estimate the minimum system sizes required to observe this instability in finite systems. Our results suggest that number-conserving dissipative protocols may not be a reliable universal tool for stabilizing dark states.

Diffusive modes of two-band fermions under number-conserving dissipative dynamics

Driven-dissipative protocols are proposed to control and create nontrivial quantum many-body correlated states. Protocols conserving the number of particles stand apart. As well-known, in quantum systems with the unitary dynamics the particle number conservation and random scattering yield diffusive behavior of two-particle excitations (diffusons and cooperons). Existence of diffusive modes in the particle-number-conserving dissipative dynamics is not well studied yet. We explicitly demonstrate the existence of diffusons in a paradigmatic model of a two-band system, with dissipative dynamics aiming to empty one fermion band and to populate the other one. The studied model is generalization of the model introduced in F. Tonielli, J. C. Budich, A. Altland, and S. Diehl, Phys. Rev. Lett. 124, 240404 (2020). We find how the diffusion coefficient depends on details of a model and the rate of dissipation. We discuss how the existence of diffusive modes complicates engineering of macroscopic many-body correlated states.

Broadened Yu-Shiba-Rusinov states in dirty superconducting films and heterostructures

The interplay of a potential and magnetic disorder in superconductors remains an active field of research for decades. Within the framework of the Usadel equation, we study the local density of states near a solitary classical magnetic impurity in a dirty superconducting film. We find that a potential disorder results in broadening of the delta-function in the local density of states at the Yu-Shiba-Rusinov (YSR) energy. This broadening is proportional to the square root of a normal-state spreading resistance of the film. We demonstrate that mesoscopic fluctuations caused by a potential disorder affect crucially a profile of the local density of states in the vicinity of the YSR energy. In addition, we demonstrate that a scanning-tunneling-microscopy tip can mask an YSR feature in the local density of states. Also, we study the local density of states near a chain of magnetic impurities situated in the normal region of a dirty superconductor/normal-metal junction. We find a resonance in the local density of states near the YSR energy. The energy scale of the resonant peak is controlled by the square root of the film resistance per square in the normal state.

The effect of anomalous elasticity on the bubbles in van der Waals heterostructures

It is shown that the anomalous elasticity of membranes affects the profile and thermodynamics of a bubble in van der Waals heterostructures. Our theory generalizes the non-linear plate theory as well as membrane theory of the pressurised blister test to incorporate the power-law scale dependence of the bending rigidity and Young's modulus of a two-dimensional crystalline membrane. This scale dependence caused by long-ranged interaction of relevant thermal fluctuations (flexural phonons), is responsible for the anomalous Hooke's law observed recently in graphene. It is shown that this anomalous elasticity affects dependence of the maximal height of the bubble on its radius and temperature. We identify the characteristic temperature above which the anomalous elasticity is important. It is suggested that for graphene-based van der Waals heterostructures the predicted anomalous regime is experimentally accessible at the room temperature.
