Strict limit on in-plane ordered magnetic dipole moment in URu2Si2

Neutron diffraction is used to examine the polarization of weak static antiferromagnetism in high quality single crystalline URu2Si2. As previously documented, elastic Bragg-like diffraction develops for temperature T<T_{HO}= 17.5 K at q=(100) but not at wave vector transfer q=(001). The peak width indicates correlation lengths ξ_c=230(12) Å\ and ξ_a=240(15) Å. The integrated intensity of the T-dependent peaks corresponds to a sample averaged c-oriented staggered moment of μ_{c}=0.022(1) μ_B at T=1.7 K. The absence of T-dependent diffraction at q=(001) places a limit μ_{\perp}<0.0011 μ_B on an f- or d-orbital based in-plane staggered magnetic dipole moment, which is associated with multipolar orders proposed for URu_2Si_2.

Hidden orbital currents and spin gap in the heavy fermion superconductor URu$_2$Si$_2$

We have performed neutron scattering experiments on the heavy fermion superconductor URu$_2$Si$_2$ to search for the orbital currents predicted to exist in the ordered phase below {\Tn} = 17.5 K. Elastic scans in the (H, K, 0) and (H, 0, L) planes revealed no such order parameter at low temperatures. This does not completely rule out orbital current formation, because our detection limit for a ring of scattering is 0.06(1) {\ub}, which is greater than the size of the predicted moment of ~0.02 {\ub}. However, on heating, a ring of quasielastic scattering does exist in the (H, K, 0) plane centered at the (1, 0, 0) antiferromagnetic Bragg position and of incommensurate radius {$τ$} = 0.4 r.l.u.. The intensity of this ring is thermally activated below {\Tn} with a characteristic energy scale of {$Δ$} = 110 K: the coherence temperature. We believe that these incommensurate spin fluctuations compete with the AF spin fluctuations, and drive the transition to a disordered magnetic state above {\Tn}. The significance of this higher energy scale with respect to {\Tn} suggests that these fluctuations also play a crucial role in the formation of the heavy fermion state.

Structural, electronic, and magneto-optical properties of YVO$_3$

Optical and magneto-optical properties of YVO$_3$ single crystal were studied in FIR, visible, and UV regions. Two structural phase transitions at 75 K and 200 K were observed and established to be of the first and second order, respectively. The lattice has an orthorhombic $Pbnm$ symmetry both above 200 K as well as below 75 K, and is found to be dimerized monoclinic $Pb11$ in between. We identify YVO$_3$ as a Mott-Hubbard insulator with the optical gap of 1.6 eV. The electronic excitations in the visible spectrum are determined by three $d$-bands at 1.8, 2.4, and 3.3 eV, followed by the charge-transfer transitions at about 4 eV. The observed structure is in good agreement with LSDA+$U$ band structure calculations. By using ligand field considerations, we assigned these bands to the transitions to the $^4A_{2g}$, $^2E_{g} + ^2T_{1g}$, and $^2T_{2g}$ states. The strong temperature dependence of these bands is in agreement with the formation of orbital order. Despite the small net magnetic moment of 0.01 $μ_B$ per vanadium, the Kerr effect of the order of $0.01^\circ$ was observed for all three $d$-bands in the magnetically ordered phase $T_{\text{Néel}}<116 K$. A surprisingly strong enhancement of the Kerr effect was found below 75 K, reaching a maximum of $0.1^\circ$. The effect is ascribed to the non-vanishing net orbital magnetic moment.

Heavy Carriers and Non-Drude Optical Conductivity in MnSi

Optical properties of the weakly helimagnetic metal MnSi have been determined in the photon energy range from 2 meV to 4.5 eV using the combination of grazing incidence reflectance at 80 degrees (2 meV to 0.8 eV) and ellipsometry (0.8 to 4.5 eV). As the sample is cooled below 100 K the effective mass becomes strongly frequency dependent at low frequencies, while the scattering rate developes a linear frequency dependence. The complex optical conductivity can be described by the phenomenological relation σ(ω,T) \propto (Γ(T)+iω)^{-1/2} used for cuprates and ruthenates.

Evidence for weak itinerant long-range magnetic correlations in UGe2

Positive muon spin relaxation measurements performed on the ferromagnet UGe2 reveal, in addition to the well known localized 5f-electron density responsible for the bulk magnetic properties, the existence of itinerant quasi-static magnetic correlations. Their critical dynamics is well described by the conventional dipolar Heisenberg model. These correlations involve small magnetic moments.

Transition between orbital orderings in YVO3

Evidence has been found for a change in the ordered occupation of the vanadium d-orbitals at the 77K phase transition in YVO3, manifested by a change in the type of Jahn-Teller distortion. The orbital ordering above 77K is not destroyed at the magnetic ordering temperature of 116K, but is present as far as a second structural phase transition at 200K. The transition between orbital orderings is caused by an increase in octahedral tilting with decreasing temperature.

Magnetic Field Dependence of the Transverse Plasmon in SmLa_0.8Sr_0.2CuO_4

The magnetic field and temperature dependence of the transverse and longitudinal plasmons in SmLa_0.8Sr_0.2CuO_{4-δ} have been measured for frequencies 5 < nu < 30 cm^{-1} and magnetic fields 0 < B < 7 T. A transition between a vortex glass and a vortex liquid regime, which revealed different field dependencies of the resonance frequencies, could be clearly observed. The positions and the spectral weights of the plasmons were successfully described using the multilayer model (Phys. Rev. B 64, 024530, 2001), which takes the compressibility of the electronic liquid into account. The compressibility is shown to remain constant in the broad range of field and temperature, which strongly supports the applicability of the model. The absolute value of the compressibility is close to that of a two-dimensional noninteracting electron gas.

29-Si NMR and Hidden Order in URu2Si2

We present new 29-Si NMR spectra in URu2Si2 for varying temperature T, and external field H. On lowering T, the systematics of the low-field lineshape and width reveal an extra component (lambda) to the linewidth below T_N ~ 17 K not observed previously. We find that lambda is magnetic-field independent and dominates the low-field lineshape for all orientations of H with respect to the tetragonal c axis. The behavior of lambda indicates a direct relationship between the 29-Si spin and the transition at T_N, but it is inconsistent with a coupling of the nuclei to static antiferromagnetic order/disorder of the U-spin magnetization. This leads us to conjecture that lambda is due to a coupling of 29-Si to the system's hidden-order parameter. A possible coupling mechanism involving charge degrees of freedom and indirect nuclear spin/spin interactions is proposed. We also propose further experiments to test for the existence of this coupling mechanism.

Observation of the Transverse Optical Plasmon in SmLa0.8Sr0.2CuO4-d

We present microwave and infrared measurements on SmLa0.8Sr0.2CuO4-d, which are direct evidence for the existence of a transverse optical plasma mode, observed as a peak in the c-axis optical conductivity. This mode appears as a consequence of the existence of two different intrinsic Josephson couplings between the CuO2 layers, one with a Sm2O2 block layer, and the other one with a (La,Sr)O block layer. From the frequencies and the intensities of the collective modes we determine the value of the compressibility of the two dimensional electron fluid in the copper oxygen planes.

Magnetic state in URu2Si2, UPd2Al3 and UNi2Al3 probed by point contacts

The antiferromagnetic (AFM) state has been investigated in the three heavy-fermion compounds URu2Si2, UPd2Al3, and UNi2Al3 by measuring dV/dI(V) curves of point contacts at different temperatures (1.5-20 K) and magnetic fields (0-28 T). The zero-bias maximum in dV/dI(V) for URu2Si2 points to a partially gapped Fermi-surface related to the itinerant nature of the AFM state contrary to UPd2Al3 where analogous features have not been found. The AFM state in UNi2Al3 has more similarities with URu2Si2. For URu2Si2, the same critical field of about 40 T along the easy c axis is found for all features in dV/dI(V) corresponding to the Neel temperature, the gap in the electronic density of states, and presumably the ordered moments.

Muon localization site in U(Pt,Pd)3

The angular and temperature (10-250 K) variation of the Knight shift of single-crystalline U(Pt0.95Pd0.05)3 has been measured in transverse field (B=0.6 T) mSR experiments. By analysing the temperature variation of the Knight shift with a modified Curie-Weiss expression the muon localization site in this hexagonal material is determined at (0,0,0).

Evidence for a two component magnetic response in UPt3

The magnetic response of the heavy fermion superconductor UPt_3 has been investigated on a microscopic scale by muon Knight shift studies. Two distinct and isotropic Knight shifts have been found for the field in the basal plane. While the volume fractions associated with the two Knight shifts are approximately equal at low and high temperatures, they show a dramatic and opposite temperature dependence around T_N. Our results are independent on the precise muon localization site. We conclude that UPt_3 is characterized by a two component magnetic response.

Disorder-to-order transition in the magnetic and electronic properties of URh_2Ge_2

We present a study of annealing effects on the physical properties of tetragonal single--crystalline URh_2Ge_2. This system, which in as-grown form was recently established as the first metallic 3D random-bond heavy-fermion spin glass, is transformed by an annealing treatment into a long-range antiferromagnetically (AFM) ordered heavy-fermion compound. The transport properties, which in the as-grown material were dominated by the structural disorder, exhibit in the annealed material signs of typical metallic behavior along the crystallographic a axis. From our study URh_2Ge_2 emerges as exemplary material highlighting the role and relevance of structural disorder for the properties of strongly correlated electron systems. We discuss the link between the magnetic and electronic behavior and how they are affected by the structural disorder.

Magnetism in heavy-fermion U(Pt,Pd)3 studied by mSR

We report mSR experiments carried out on a series of heavy-electron pseudobinary compounds U(Pt1-xPdx)3 (x<=0.05). For x<=0.005 the zero-field muon depolarisation is described by the Kubo-Toyabe function. However the temperature variation of the Kubo-Toyabe relaxation rate does not show any sign of the small-moment antiferromagnetic phase with TN~6 K (signalled by neutron diffraction), in contrast to previous reports. The failure to detect the small ordered moment suggests it has a fluctuating (> 10 MHz) nature, which is consistent with the interpretation of NMR data. For 0.01<=x<=0.05 the muon depolarisation in the ordered state is described by two terms of equal amplitude: an exponentially damped spontaneous oscillation and a Lorentzian Kubo-Toyabe function. These terms are associated with antiferromagnetic order with substantial moments. The Knight-shift measured in a magnetic field of 0.6 T on single-crystalline U(Pt0.95Pd0.05)3 in the paramagnetic state shows two signals for B perpendicular to c, while only one signal is observed for B||c. The observation of two signals for B perpendicular to c, while there is only one muon localisation site (0,0,0), points to the presence of two spatially distinct regions of different magnetic response.

NMR Detection of Temperature-Dependent Magnetic Inhomogeneities in URu2Si2

We present 29Si-NMR relaxation and spectral data in URu2Si2. Our echo-decay experiments detect slowly fluctuating magnetic field gradients. In addition, we find that the echo-decay shape (time dependence) varies with temperature T and its rate behaves critically near the Neel temperature TN, indicating a correlation between the gradient fluctuations and the transition to small-moment order. T-dependent broadening contributions become visible below 100 Kelvin and saturate somewhat above TN, remaining saturated at lower temperatures. Together, the line width and shift suggest partial lattice distortions below TN. We propose an intrinsic minority phase below $T_{\rm N}$ and compare our results with one of the current theoretical models.

Similarity of slow stripe fluctations between Sr-doped cuprates and oxygen-doped nickelates

Stripe fluctuations in La2NiO4.17 have been studied by 139La NMR using the field and temperature dependence of the linewidth and relaxation rates. In the formation process of the stripes the NMR line intensity is maximal below 230K, starts to diminish around 140K, disappears around 50K and recovers at 4K. These results are shown to be consistent with, but completely complementary to neutron measurements, and to be generic for oxygen doped nickelates and underdoped cuprates.

Systematics of c-axis Phonons in the Thallium and Bismuth Based Cuprate Superconductors

We present grazing incidence reflectivity measurements in the far infrared region at temperatures above and below Tc for a series of thallium (Tl2Ba2CuO6, Tl2Ba2CaCu2O8) and bismuth (Bi2Sr2CuO6, Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8, and Bi(2-x)Pb(x)Sr2CaCu2O8) based cuprate superconductors. From the spectra, which are dominated by the c-axis phonons, longitudinal frequencies (LO) are directly obtained. The reflectivity curves are well fitted by a series of Lorentz oscillators. In this way the transverse (TO) phonon frequencies were accurately determined. On the basis of the comparative study of the Bi and Tl based cuprates with different number of CuO2 layers per unit cell, we suggest modifications of the assignment of the main oxygen modes. We compare the LO frequencies in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 and Tl2Ba2Ca2Cu3O10 obtained from intrinsic Josephson junction characteristics with our measurements, and explain the discrepancy in LO frequencies obtained by the two different methods.

Superconductivity in heavy-fermion U(Pt,Pd)3 and its interplay with magnetism

The effect of Pd doping on the superconducting phase diagram of the unconventional superconductor UPt3 has been measured by (magneto)resistance, specific heat, thermal expansion and magnetostriction. Experiments on single- and polycrystalline U(Pt1-xPdx)3 for x<= 0.006 show that the superconducting transition temperatures of the A phase, Tc+, and of the B phase, Tc-, both decrease, while the splitting DTc increases at a rate of 0.30(2)K/at.%Pd. We find that DTc(x) correlates with an increase of the weak magnetic moment m(x) upon Pd doping. This provides further evidence for Ginzburg-Landau scenarios with magnetism as the symmetry breaking field, i.e. the 2D E representation and the 1D odd parity model. Only for small splittings DTc is proportional to m^2(Tc+) (DTc<= 0.05 K) as predicted. The results at larger splittings call for Ginzburg-Landau expansions beyond 4th order. The tetracritical point in the B-T plane persists till at least x= 0.002 for B perpendicular to c, while it is rapidly suppressed for B||c. Upon alloying the A and B phases gain stability at the expense of the C phase.
