Particle identification in ground-based gamma-ray astronomy using convolutional neural networks

Modern detectors of cosmic gamma-rays are a special type of imaging telescopes (air Cherenkov telescopes) supplied with cameras with a relatively large number of photomultiplier-based pixels. For example, the camera of the TAIGA-IACT telescope has 560 pixels of hexagonal structure. Images in such cameras can be analysed by deep learning techniques to extract numerous physical and geometrical parameters and/or for incoming particle identification. The most powerful deep learning technique for image analysis, the so-called convolutional neural network (CNN), was implemented in this study. Two open source libraries for machine learning, PyTorch and TensorFlow, were tested as possible software platforms for particle identification in imaging air Cherenkov telescopes. Monte Carlo simulation was performed to analyse images of gamma-rays and background particles (protons) as well as estimate identification accuracy. Further steps of implementation and improvement of this technique are discussed.

Particles Flux of Ultrahigh Energy from a Galactic Plane

Arrival directions of particles were analyzed according to the arrays of extensive air showers (EAS) data. A new method of sources search and anisotropy of arrival directions particles is suggested. There was found the particles flux of ultrahigh energy from the galactic plane that exceeds the expected number of particles in the case of isotropy more than 4σand 5σ.

Arrival directions of ultrahigh energy extensive air showers (EAS) by world arrays data are analyzed. It is shown that arrival directions of ultrahigh energy EAS by Yakutsk and P. Auger data are some correlated with pulsars of Local Arm Orion of Galaxy. It is found large amplitude of first harmony of Fourier row by data Yakutsk array. The problem of cosmic rays origin is discussed.

Search for Sources of Ultrahigh Energy Cosmic Rays

The arrival directions of ultrahigh energy extensive air showers (EAS) by Yakutsk, AGASA and P. Auger data are considered. It is found that the arrival directions of EAS in the Yakutsk and AGASA data are correlated with pulsars from the side Input, and in the P. Auger data are correlated with pulsars from the Output of the Local Arm of Orion. It is shown that the majority of these pulsars have a short rotation period around their axes, than expected by the pulsar catalogue.

Search Sources of Cosmic Rays Ultrahigh Energy

The arrival directions of ultrahigh energy extensive air showers (EAS) by Yakutsk, AGASA and P. Auger data are considered. It is found that the arrival directions of EAS with a deficit muons by Yakutsk data are not isotropy. Majority of these EAS form doublets which have maximum at side anticenter of Galaxy. It is shown that some EAS by data of Yakutsk, AGASA, P.Auger correlate with pulsars. These pulsars are situated near Input and Output Local arm Galaxy Orion. The majority of these pulsars have a short period rotate around of their axes. The problem of cosmic ray origin is discussed.

For the first time, the maps of equal exposition of celestial sphere for the distribution of particles by AGASA and SUGAR array data have been constructed. The large-scale anisotropy of E>4.10^19 eV cosmic rays from the side of Input and Output of the Galaxy Local Arm by Yakutsk, AGASA and SUGAR array data has been detected. The problem of cosmic ray origin is discussed.

Seasonal Change of the Ozone Layer State over Yakutia

The ozone layer state in the stratosphere over Yakutia depending on the year time is considered. It is shown that the layer thickness is maximum in February-March (450 Dobson's units) and it is minimum in July-September (300 - 350 DU). Measurements indicate that the ozone layer thickness was significantly decreased in the 1990's. A problem of change of ozone layer state is discussed.

Extensive air showers without muon component

Extensive air showers of cosmic rays with energies above 5.10**18 eV registered by the Yakutsk array have been analyzed. The existence of showers without muon component is found. Among them we found 5 clusters and these clusters correlate with nearest pulsars. It is found that there exist 4 classes of showers. Showers with high content of muons are mainly observed at E> 4.10**19 eV and they are formed most likely by heavy nuclei.

Estimate of the Mass Composition of Ultrahigh Energy Cosmic Rays

It is proposed a new approach for estimating the composition of cosmic rays. It is found that the zenith angle distributions and muon components of EAS for energies E>10^19 eV and E>4.10^19 eV differ from each other. It is shown that the cosmic rays above E>4.10^19 eV is heavier than the cosmic rays at energy E~ 10^19 eV. According to our estimation the SUGAR array detected 8 showers above 10^20 eV. It is concluded that no sign of Greisen-Zatsepin-Kuzmin (GZK) cut off in the spectrum of cosmic rays and all cosmic rays are galactic.

Clusters of Cosmic Rays above 4.10^19 eV

Arrival directions of cosmic rays with the energy E>4.10^19 eV are analyzed on the basis of the Yakutsk and AGASA extensive air shower arrays. It is supposed that the clusters can be formed as a result of fragmentation of superheavy nuclei. The consequences of this supposition compare with experimental data. Part of clusters with E>2.10^19 eV correlate with the nearest pulsars. The new effect is found - clusters intensify a feature of cosmic rays distribution.

Cosmic Rays with Energy Above 10^{17} ev

The energy spectrum of primary cosmic rays with ultra high energies based on the Yakutsk EAS Array data is presented. For the largest events values of S600 and axis coordinates have been obtained using revised lateral distribution function. The affect of the arrival time distribution at several axis distance on estimated density for Yakutsk and AGASA is considered.

Spectrum of cosmic rays with energy above $10^{17}$ eV

There are some discrepancies in the results on energy spectrum from Yakutsk, AGASA, and HiRes experiments. In this work differential energy spectrum of primary cosmic rays based on the Yakutsk EAS Array data is presented. For the largest events values of $S_{600}$ and axes coordinates have been obtained using revised lateral distribution function. Simulation of converter's response at large distances showed no considerable underestimation of particle density. Complex shape of spectrum in region of $\E > 10^{17}$ eV is confirmed. After adjustment of parameters and additional exposition at the Yakutsk array there are three events with energy $\E > 10^{20}$ eV.

Are Clusters as Indicators of the Cosmic Ray Anisotropy ?

The clusters (doublets) in ultrahigh energy cosmic rays are considered based on Yakutsk and AGASA extensive air shower array data. The problem of cluster origin is discussed. It is found that arrival directions of the clusters can point to a cosmic ray anisotropy. As a result of analysis of clusters, the conclusion on composition and origin of ultrahigh energy cosmic rays has been made.

The spectrum features of UHECRs below and surrounding GZK

The energy spectrum of UHECRs is discussed on the basis of the Yakutsk array database analysis. In the region E=0.1 to 30 EeV the showers are detected under trigger-500, while at energies above 30 EeV the whole acceptance area for trigger-1000 is used in order to utilize all the data available in the region of GZK cutoff.

Deficit of Ultrahigh Energy Extensive Air Showers

Arrival directions of extensive air showers by using world data are considered. It is shown that distributions of showers in zenith angle at E>10^{19}eV and E>4.10^{19}eV differ from each other. On this basis the conclusions are made: the estimation of the energy of inclined showers at E>4.10^{19}eV at Yakutsk and AGASA arrays is incorrect; the cosmic ray spectrum is not break up and most likely continued up to E=10^{20}eV and higher. It is found that ultrahigh energy cosmic rays are, probably, superheavy nuclei.
