Orbital antiferromagnetic currents in a frustrated fermionic ladder

We consider a spinless $t$-$t'$ ionic Hubbard chain at 1/2 filling and large hopping ratio $t'/t$. In this limit the model adequately maps onto a weakly coupled triangular ladder with a potential interchain bias. The low-energy properties of the system are formed due to the interplay of geometrical frustration, correlations and charge imbalance. We derive the effective field-theoretical model to study universal properties of the model in the scaling limit. We show that at full dynamical frustration the ground state of the ladder represents a repulsive version of the Luther-Emery liquid with dominant orbital antiferromagnetic correlations exhibiting the slowest power-law decay in the ground state. Pairing correlations also display algebraic order but are subdominant. At an incomplete dynamical frustration a finite commensurability gap is dynamically generated, and the fluctuating OAF transforms to a long-range ordered state with a spontaneously broken time reversal symmetry. The mass gap in the spectrum of relative density fluctuations gets suppressed upon increasing the potential bias.

Phase diagram of an interacting staggered Su-Schrieffer-Heeger two-chain ladder close to a quantum critical point

We study the ground-state phase diagram of an interacting staggered Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) ladder in the vicinity of the Gaussian quantum critical point. The corresponding effective field theory is a double-frequency sine-Gordon (DSG) model which involves two perturbations at the Gaussian fixed point: the deviation from criticality and Umklapp scattering processes. A topological distinction between thermodynamically equivalent phases becomes only feasible when nonlocal fermionic fields, parity and string order parameter, are included into consideration. We prove that a noninteracting fermionic staggered SSH ladder is exactly equivalent to a O(2)-symmetric model of two decoupled Kitaev-Majorana chains, or two 1D p-wave superconductors. Close to the Gaussian fixed point the SSH ladder maps to an Ashkin-Teller like system when interactions are included. Thus, the topological order in the SSH ladder is related to broken-symmetry phases of the associated quantum spin-chain degrees of freedom. The obtained phase diagram includes a Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid state which, due to Umklapp processes, can become unstable against either spontaneous dimerization or the onset of a charge-density wave (CDW). In these gapped phases elementary bulk excitations are quantum kinks carrying the charge QF = 1/2. For sufficiently strong, long-range interactions, the phase diagram of the model exhibits a bifurcation of the Gaussian critical point into two outgoing Ising criticalities. The latter sandwich a mixed phase in which dimerization coexists with a site-diagonal CDW. In this phase elementary bulk excitations are represented by two types of topological solitons carrying different fermionic charges, which continuously interpolate between 0 and 1. This phase has also mixed topological properties with coexisting parity and string order parameters.

Ground state phases and quantum criticalities of one-dimensional Peierls model with spin-dependent sign-alternating potentials

We consider a one-dimensional commensurate Peierls insulator in the presence of spin-dependent sign-alternating potentials. In a continuum description, the latter supply the fermions with spin-dependent "relativistic" masses $m_{\uparrow,\downarrow}$. The ground-state phase diagram describes three gapped phases: the CDW and SDW-like band insulator phases sandwiched by a "mixed" phase in which the CDW and SDW superstructures coexist with a nonzero spontaneous dimerization (SD). The critical lines separating the massive phases belong to the Ising universality class. The Ising criticality is accompanied by the Kohn anomaly in the renormalized phonon spectrum. We derive a Ginzburg criterion which specifies a narrow region around the critical point where quantum fluctuations play a dominant role, rendering the adiabatic (or mean-field) approximation inapplicable. A full account of quantum effects is achieved in the anti-adiabatic limit where the effective low-energy theory represents a massive version the N=4 Gross-Neveu model. Using Abelian bosonization we demonstrate that the description of the SD phase, including its critical boundaries, is well approximated by a sum of two effective double-frequency sine-Gordon (DSG) models subject to self-consistency conditions that couple the charge and spin sectors. Using the well-known critical properties of the DSG model we obtain the singular parts of the dimerization order parameter and staggered charge and spin susceptibilities near the Ising critical lines. We show that, in the anti-adiabatic limit, on the line $m_{\downarrow} = 0$ there exists of a Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless critical point separating a Luttinger-liquid gapless phase from the spontaneously dimerized one. We also discuss topological excitations of the model carrying fractional charge and spin. \pacs{71.10.Pm; 71.27.+a; 71.45.Lr; 75.40.Kb}

Zero energy Majorana modes in spin ladders and a possible realization of the Kitaev model

We show that in double-chain Mott insulators (ladders), disordered alternating ionic potentials may locally destroy coherence of magnetic excitations and lead to the appearance of spontaneously dimerized islands inside the Haldane spin-liquid phase. We argue that a boundary between the dimerized and Haldane phases of a spin-1/2 ladder supports a localized zero-energy Majorana fermion mode. Based on these findings we suggest a realization of a generalized Kitaev model where Majorana fermions can propagate in more than one dimension.

Fractional charge excitations in fermionic ladders

The system of interacting spinless fermions hopping on a two-leg ladder in the presence of an external magnetic field is shown to possess a long range order: the bond density wave or the staggered flux phase. In both cases the elementary excitations are $Z_2$ kinks and carry one half the charge of an electron.

Ordered phases of XXZ-symmetric spin-1/2 zigzag ladder

Using bosonization approach, we derive an effective low-energy theory for XXZ-symmetric spin-1/2 zigzag ladders and discuss its phase diagram by a variational approach. A spin nematic phase emerges in a wide part of the phase diagram, either critical or massive. Possible crossovers between the spontaneously dimerized and spin nematic phases are discussed, and the topological excitations in all phases identified.

Coulomb Blockade Regime of a Single-Wall Nanotube

A model of carbon nanotube at half filling is studied. The Coulomb interaction is assumed to be unscreened. It is shown that this allows to develop the adiabatic approximation which leads to considerable simplifications in calculations of the excitation spectrum. We give a detailed analysis of the spectrum and the phase diagram at half filling and discuss effects of small doping. At small doping several phases develop strong superconducting fluctuations corresponding to various types of pairing.

Spinons in more than one dimension: Resonance Valence Bond state stabilized by frustration

For two spatially anisotropic, SU(2)-invariant models of frustrated magnets in arbitrary space dimension we present a non-perturbative proof of the existence of neutral spin-1/2 excitations (spinons). In one model the frustration is static and based on fine tuning of the coupling constants, whereas in the other it is dynamic and does not require adjusting of the model parameters. For both models we derive a low-energy effective action which does not contain any constraints. Though our models admit the standard gauge theory treatment, we follow an alternative approach based on Abelian and non-Abelian bosonization. We prove the existence of propagating spin-1/2 excitations (spinons) and consider in detail certain exactly solvable limits. A qualitative discussion of the most general case is also presented.

Criticality in self-dual sine-Gordon models

We discuss the nature of criticality in the $β^2 = 2 πN$ self-dual extention of the sine-Gordon model. This field theory is related to the two-dimensional classical XY model with a N-fold degenerate symmetry-breaking field. We briefly overview the already studied cases $N=2,4$ and analyze in detail the case N=3 where a single phase transition in the three-state Potts universality class is expected to occur. The Z$_3$ infrared critical properties of the $β^2 = 6 π$ self-dual sine-Gordon model are derived using two non-perturbative approaches. On one hand, we map the model onto an integrable deformation of the Z$_4$ parafermion theory. The latter is known to flow to a massless Z$_3$ infrared fixed point. Another route is based on the connection with a chirally asymmetric, su(2)$_4$ $\otimes$ su(2)$_1$ Wess-Zumino-Novikov-Witten model with anisotropic current-current interaction, where we explore the existence of a decoupling (Toulouse) point.

Quantum criticalities in a two-leg antiferromagnetic S=1/2 ladder induced by a staggered magnetic field

We study a two-leg antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 ladder in the presence of a staggered magnetic field. We consider two parameter regimes: strong (weak) coupling along the legs and weak (strong) coupling along the rungs. In both cases, the staggered field drives the Haldane spin-liquid phase of the ladder towards a Gaussian quantum criticality. In a generalized spin ladder with a non-Haldane, spontaneously dimerized phase, the staggered magnetic field induces an Ising quantum critical regime. In the vicinity of the critical lines, we derive low-energy effective field theories and use these descriptions to determine the dynamical response functions, the staggered spin susceptibility and the string order parameter.

Ising-model description of the SU(2)_1 quantum critical point in a dimerized two-leg spin-1/2 ladder

A nonperturbative analytical description of the SU(2)_1 quantum critical point in an explicitly dimerized two-leg spin-1/2 Heisenberg ladder is presented. It is shown that this criticality essentially coincides with that emerging in a weakly dimerized spin-1 chain with a small Haldane gap. The approach is based on the mapping onto an SO(3)-symmetric model of three strongly coupled quantum Ising chains. This mapping is used to establish the correspondence between all physical fields of the spin ladder and those characterizing the SU(2)_1 criticality at the infrared fixed point.

Critical properties of the double-frequency sine-Gordon model with applications

We study the properties of the double-frequency sine--Gordon model in the vicinity of the Ising quantum phase transition displayed by this model. Using a mapping onto a generalised lattice quantum Ashkin-Teller model, we obtain critical and nearly-off-critical correlation functions of various operators. We discuss applications of the double-sine-Gordon model to one-dimensional physical systems, like spin chains in a staggered external field and interacting electrons in a staggered potential.

Bosonization and Strongly Correlated Systems

This volume provides a detailed account of bosonization. The first part of the book examines the technical aspects of bosonization including one-dimensional fermions, the Gaussian model, the structure of Hilbert space in conformal theories, Bose-Einstein condensation in two dimensions, non-Abelian bosonization, and the Ising and WZNW models. The second part presents applications of the bosonization technique to realistic models including the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid, spin liquids in one dimension and the spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain with alternative exchange. The third part addresses the problems of quantum impurities. Chapters cover potential scattering, the X-ray edge problem, impurities in Tomonaga-Luttinger liquids and the multi-channel Kondo problem.

Theory Of The One Dimensional SU(4) Spin-Orbital Model

The one-dimensional spin-orbital model is studied by means of Abelian bosonization. We derive the low-energy effective theory which enables us to study small deviations from the SU(4) symmetric point. We show that there exists a massless region with algebraically decaying correlation functions, $\sim \cos(π/{2a_0} x) x^{-3/2}$. When entering the massive phase, the system displays an approximate SO(6) enlarged symmetry with a dimerization type of ordering consisting in alternating spin and orbital singlets.

New Chiral Universality Class in a Frustrated Three-Leg Spin Ladder

We study a model of three $S=1/2$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg spin chains weakly coupled by on-rung and plaquette-diagonal interchain interactions. It is shown that the model exhibits a critical phase with central charge C=2 and belongs to the class of ``chirally stabilized'' liquids recently introduced by Andrei, Douglas, and Jerez. By allowing anisotropic interactions in spin space, we find an exact solution at a Toulouse point which captures all universal properties of the model, including the SU(2) symmetric case. At the new critical point the massless degrees of freedom are described in terms of an effective $S = 1/2$ Heisenberg spin chain and two critical Ising models. We discuss the spectral properties of the model, compute spin-spin correlation functions and estimate the NMR relaxation rate.

One-dimensional spin-liquid without magnon excitations

It is shown that a sufficiently strong four-spin interaction in the spin-1/2 spin ladder can cause dimerization. Such interaction can be generated either by phonons or (in the doped state) by the conventional Coulomb repulsion between the holes. The dimerized phases are thermodynamically undistinguishable from the Haldane phase, but have dramatically different correlation functions: the dynamical magnetic susceptibility, instead of displaying a sharp single magnon peak near $q = π$, shows only a two-particle threshold separated from the ground state by a gap.

Antiferromagnetic spin ladders: crossover between spin S = 1/2 and S = 1 chains

We study a model of two weakly coupled isotropic spin-1/2 Heisenberg chains with an antiferromagnetic coupling along the chains. It is shown that the system always has a spectral gap. For the case of identical chains the model in the continuous limit is equivalent to 4 decoupled noncritical Ising models. For this case we obtain the exact expressions for the asymptotics of spin-spin correlation functions. When the chains have different exchange integrals the spectrum at low energies is well described by the O(3) nonlinear sigma model. We discuss the topological order parameter related to the gap formation and give a detailed description of the dynamical magnetic susceptibility.
