Elliptic flow of electrons from beauty-hadron decays extracted from Pb--Pb collision data at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$ = 2.76 TeV

We present a calculation of the elliptic flow of electrons from beauty-hadron decays in semi-central Pb--Pb collisions at centre-of-mass energy per colliding nucleon pair, represented as $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$, of 2.76 TeV. The result is obtained by the subtraction of the charm quark contribution in the elliptic flow of electrons from heavy-flavour hadron decays in semi-central Pb--Pb collisions at \snn = 2.76 TeV recently made publicly available by the ALICE collaboration.

Study of 9Be+12C elastic scattering at energies near the Coulomb barrier

In this work, angular distribution measurements for the elastic channel were performed for the 9Be+12C reaction at the energies ELab=13.0, 14.5, 17.3, 19.0 and 21.0 MeV, near the Coulomb barrier. The data have been analyzed in the framework of the double folding São Paulo potential. The experimental elastic scattering angular distributions were well described by the optical potential at forward angles for all measured energies. However, for the three highest energies, an enhancement was observed for intermediate and backward angles. This can be explained by the elastic transfer mechanism. Keywords: 9Be+12C, Elastic Scattering, Sãoo Paulo Potential.

Projectile breakup dynamics for $^{6}$Li + $^{59}$Co: kinematical analysis of $α$-$d$ coincidences

A study of the kinematics of the $α$-$d$ coincidences in the $^{6}$Li + $^{59}$Co system at a bombarding energy of $E_{lab} = 29.6$ MeV is presented. With exclusive measurements performed over different angular intervals it is possible to identify the respective contributions of the sequential projectile breakup and direct projectile breakup components. A careful analysis using a semiclassical approach of these processes provides information on both their lifetime and their distance of occurrence with respect to the target. Breakup to the low-lying (near-threshold) continuum is delayed, and happens at large internuclear distances. This suggests that the influence of the projectile breakup on the complete fusion process can be related essentially to direct breakup to the $^6$Li high-lying continuum spectrum. %

Reaction mechanisms in the 6Li+59Co system

The reactions induced by the weakly bound 6Li projectile interacting with the intermediate mass target 59Co were investigated. Light charged particles singles and $α$-$d$ coincidence measurements were performed at the near barrier energies E_lab = 17.4, 21.5, 25.5 and 29.6 MeV. The main contributions of the different competing mechanisms are discussed. A statistical model analysis, Continuum-Discretized Coupled-Channels calculations and two-body kinematics were used as tools to provide information to disentangle the main components of these mechanisms. A significant contribution of the direct breakup was observed through the difference between the experimental sequential breakup cross section and the CDCC prediction for the non-capture breakup cross section.

Open heavy flavor production at RHIC

The study of heavy flavor production in relativistic heavy ion collisions is an extreme experimental challenge but provides important information on the properties of the Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP) created in Au+Au collisions at RHIC. Heavy-quarks are believed to be produced in the initial stages of the collision, and are essential on the understanding of parton energy loss in the dense medium created in such environment. Moreover, heavy-quarks can help to investigate fundamental properties of QCD in elementary p+p collisions. In this work we review recent results on heavy flavor production and their interaction with the hot and dense medium at RHIC.

Incomplete fusion versus breakup competition with weakly bound projectiles

The importance of the breakup channel in the vicinity of the Coulomb barrier (1<Ec.m./Vb<2) is investigated for the medium weight 6Li+59Co system. Three-body final-state analysis of light-particle coincident data was carried out to disentangle, for the first time, the breakup contributions from other competiting mechanisms. alpha-d angular correlations show incomplete fusion components as significant as that from breakup process. Their strong coupling to total fusion is discussed within a comparison with predictions of continuum discretized coupled-channel calculations.

High-$p_{T}$ electron distributions in d+Au and p+p collisions at RHIC

We present preliminary measurements of electron and positron spectra in d+Au and p+p collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=200$ GeV for $1.5 < p_{T} < 7.0$ GeV/c. These measurements were carried out using the STAR Time Projection Chamber (TPC) and the Barrel Electromagnetic calorimeter (EMC). Overall hadron rejection factors in the range of $10^{5}$ have been achieved. In this work we describe the measurement technique used to discriminate electrons from hadrons and compare the results for single electron spectra with Pythia based pQCD calculations for electrons from heavy-quark semi-leptonic decays.
