A projected gradient dynamical system modeling the dynamics of bargaining

We propose a projected gradient dynamical system as a model for a bargaining scheme for an asset for which the two interested agents have personal valuations which do not initially coincide. The personal valuations are formed using subjective beliefs concerning the future states of the world and the reservation prices are calculated using expected utility theory. The agents are not rigid concerning their subjective probabilities and are willing to update them under the pressure to reach finally an agreement concerning the asset. The proposed projected dynamical system, on the space of probability measures, provides a model for the evolution of the agents beliefs during the bargaining period and is constructed so that agreement is reached under the minimum possible deviation of both agents from their initial beliefs. The convergence results are shown using techniques from convex dynamics and Lyapunov function theory.

Optimal Life Insurance Purchase, Consumption and Investment on a financial market with multi-dimensional diffusive terms

We introduce an extension to Merton's famous continuous time model of optimal consumption and investment, in the spirit of previous works by Pliska and Ye, to allow for a wage earner to have a random lifetime and to use a portion of the income to purchase life insurance in order to provide for his estate, while investing his savings in a financial market comprised of one risk-free security and an arbitrary number of risky securities driven by multi-dimensional Brownian motion. We then provide a detailed analysis of the optimal consumption, investment, and insurance purchase strategies for the wage earner whose goal is to maximize the expected utility obtained from his family consumption, from the size of the estate in the event of premature death, and from the size of the estate at the time of retirement. We use dynamic programming methods to obtain explicit solutions for the case of discounted constant relative risk aversion utility functions and describe new analytical results which are presented together with the corresponding economic interpretations.

An asymptotic universal focal decomposition for non-isochronous potentials

Galileo, in the XVII century, observed that the small oscillations of a pendulum seem to have constant period. In fact, the Taylor expansion of the period map of the pendulum is constant up to second order in the initial angular velocity around the stable equilibrium. It is well known that, for small oscillations of the pendulum and small intervals of time, the dynamics of the pendulum can be approximated by the dynamics of the harmonic oscillator. We study the dynamics of a family of mechanical systems that includes the pendulum at small neighbourhoods of the equilibrium but after long intervals of time so that the second order term of the period map can no longer be neglected. We analyze such dynamical behaviour through a renormalization scheme acting on the dynamics of this family of mechanical systems. The main theorem states that the asymptotic limit of this renormalization scheme is universal: it is the same for all the elements in the considered class of mechanical systems. As a consequence, we obtain an universal asymptotic focal decomposition for this family of mechanical systems. This paper is intended to be the first of a series of articles aiming at a semiclassical quantization of systems of the pendulum type as a natural application of the focal decomposition associated to the two-point boundary value problem.

Negro and Danube are mirror rivers

We study the European river Danube and the South American river Negro daily water levels. We present a fit for the Negro daily water level period and standard deviation. Unexpectedly, we discover that the river Negro and Danube are mirror rivers in the sense that the daily water levels fluctuations histograms are close to the BHP and reversed BHP, respectively.

Geometric measures for hyperbolic sets on surfaces

We present a moduli space for all hyperbolic basic sets of diffeomorphisms on surfaces that have an invariant measure that is absolutely continuous with respect to Hausdorff measure. To do this we introduce two new invariants: the measure solenoid function and the cocycle-gap pair. We extend the eigenvalue formula of A. N. Livsic and Ja. G. Sinai for Anosov diffeomorphisms which preserve an absolutely continuous measure to hyperbolic basic sets on surfaces which possess an invariant measure absolutely continuous with respect to Hausdorff measure. We characterise the Lipschitz conjugacy classes of such hyperbolic systems in a number of ways, for example, in terms of eigenvalues of periodic points and Gibbs measures.

Dynamical Systems Applied to Asymptotic Geometry

In the paper we discuss two questions about smooth expanding dynamical systems on the circle. (i) We characterize the sequences of asymptotic length ratios which occur for systems with Hölder continuous derivative. The sequences of asymptotic length ratios are precisely those given by a positive Hölder continuous function $s$ (solenoid function) on the Cantor set $C$ of 2-adic integers satisfying a functional equation called the matching condition. The functional equation for the 2-adic integer Cantor set is $s(2x+1)=\frac{s(x)}{s(2x)}(1+\frac{1}{s(2x-1)})-1.$ We also present a one-to-one correspondence between solenoid functions and affine classes of 2-adic quasiperiodic tilings of the real line that are fixed points of the 2-amalgamation operator. (ii) We calculate the precise maximum possible level of smoothness for a representative of the system, up to diffeomorphic conjugacy, in terms of the functions $s$ and $cr(x)=(1+s(x))/(1+(s(x+1))^{-1})$. For example, in the Lipschitz structure on $C$ determined by $s$, the maximum smoothness is $C^{1+α}$ for $0<α\le 1$ if, and only if, $s$ is $α$-Hölder continuous. The maximum smoothness is $C^{2+α}$ for $0<α\le 1$ if, and only if, $cr$ is $(1+α)$-Hölder. A curious connection with Mostow type rigidity is provided by the fact that $s$ must be constant if it is $α$-Hölder for $α> 1$.
