Vacuum fermionic currents in braneworld models on AdS bulk with a cosmic string

We investigate the effects of a brane and magnetic-flux-carrying cosmic string on the vacuum expectation value (VEV) of the current density for a charged fermionic field in the background geometry of 4+1 dimensional anti-de Sitter (AdS) spacetime. The brane is parallel to the AdS boundary and the cosmic string is orthogonal to the brane. Two types of boundary conditions are considered on the brane that include the MIT bag boundary condition and the boundary conditions in Z2-symmetric braneworld models. The brane divides the space into two regions with different properties of the vacuum state. The only nonzero component of the current density is along the azimuthal direction and in both the regions the corresponding VEV is decomposed into the brane-free and brane-induced contributions. The latter vanishes on the string and near the string the total current is dominated by the brane-free part. At large distances from the string and in the region between the brane and AdS horizon the decay of the brane-induced current density, as a function of the proper distance, is power-law for both massless and massive fields. For a massive field this behavior is essentially different from that in the Minkowski bulk. In the region between the brane and AdS boundary the large-distance decay of the current density is exponential. Depending on the boundary condition on the brane, the brane-induced contribution is dominant or subdominant in the total current density at large distances from the string. By using the results for fields realizing two inequivalent irreducible representations of the Clifford algebra, the vacuum current density is investigated in C- and P-symmetric fermionic models. Applications are given for a cosmic string in the Randall-Sundrum-type braneworld model with a single brane.

Cherenkov radiation and emission of surface polaritons from charges moving paraxially outside a dielectric cylindrical waveguide

We investigate the radiation from a charged particle moving outside a dielectric cylinder parallel to its axis. It is assumed that the cylinder is immersed into a homogeneous medium. The expressions are given for the vector potential and for the electric and magnetic fields. The spectral distributions are studied for three types of the radiations: (i) Cherenkov radiation (CR) in the exterior medium, (ii) radiation on the guided modes of the dielectric cylinder, and (iii) emission of surface polaritons. Unlike the first two types of radiations, there is no velocity threshold for the generation of surface polaritons. The corresponding radiation is present in the spectral range where the dielectric permittivities of the cylinder and surrounding medium have opposite signs. The spectral range of the emitted surface polaritons becomes narrower with decreasing energy of the particle. The general results are illustrated for a special case of the Drude model for dispersion of the dielectric permittivity of the cylinder. We show that the presence of the cylinder may lead to the appearance of strong narrow peaks in the spectral distribution of the CR in the exterior medium. The conditions are specified for the appearance of those peaks and the corresponding heights and widths are analytically estimated. The collective effects of particles in bunches are discussed.

Quantum vacuum effects in braneworlds on AdS bulk

We review the results of investigations for brane-induced effects on the local properties of quantum vacuum in background of AdS spacetime. Two geometries are considered: a brane parallel to the AdS boundary and a brane intersecting the AdS boundary. For both these cases the contribution in the vacuum expectation value (VEV) of the energy-momentum tensor is separated explicitly and its behavior in various asymptotic regions of the parameters is studied. It is shown that the influence of the gravitational field on the local properties of the quantum vacuum is essential at distance from the brane larger than the AdS curvature radius. In the geometry with a brane parallel to the AdS boundary the VEV of the energy-momentum tensor is considered for scalar field with the Robin boundary condition, for Dirac field with the bag boundary condition and for the electromagnetic field. In the latter case two types of boundary conditions are discussed. The first one is a generalization of the perfect conductor boundary condition and the second one corresponds to the confining boundary condition used in QCD for gluons. For the geometry of a brane intersecting the AdS boundary, the case of a scalar field is considered. The corresponding energy-momentum tensor, apart from the diagonal components, has nonzero off-diagonal component. As a consequence of the latter, in addition to the normal component, the Casimir force acquires a component parallel to the brane.

Electromagnetic field correlators and the Casimir effect for planar boundaries in AdS spacetime with application in braneworlds

We evaluate the correlators for the vector potential and for the field strength tensor of the electromagnetic field in the geometry of two parallel planar plates in AdS spacetime. Two types of boundary conditions are considered on the plates. The first one is a generalization of perfect conductor boundary condition and the second one corresponds to the confining boundary conditions. By using the expressions for the correlators, the vacuum expectation values (VEVs) of the photon condensate and of the electric and magnetic fields squared are investigated. As another important local characteristic of the vacuum state we consider the VEV of the energy-momentum tensor. The Casimir forces acting on the plates are decomposed into the self-action and interaction parts. It is shown that the interaction forces are attractive for both types of boundary conditions. At separations between the plates larger than the curvature radius of the background geometry they decay exponentially as functions of the proper distance. The self-action force per unit surface of a single plate does not depend on its location and depending on the boundary condition and on the number of spatial dimensions can be either attractive or repulsive with respect to the AdS boundary. By using the generalized zeta function technique we also evaluate the total Casimir energy. Applications are given in $Z_{2}$-symmetric braneworld models of the Randall-Sundrum type for vector fields with even and odd parities.

Self-amplification of radiation from an electron bunch inside a waveguide filled with periodic medium

We investigate the radiation from a bunch of relativistic electrons moving along the cylindrical waveguide axis, assuming that the waveguide is partially loaded by a medium with periodic dielectric permittivity and magnetic permeability. The spectral distribution of the radiation energy flux through the cross section of the waveguide is studied at large distances from the medium. The analysis is based on the corresponding exact solution of Maxwell equations for the case of a single electron moving along the waveguide axis. The results of numerical calculations are presented in the special case of layered medium consisting of a finite number of dielectric plates separated by vacuum gaps. We show that under certain conditions on the problem parameters the quasi-coherent Cherenkov radiation generated by the electron bunch inside the plates is self-amplified at certain waveguide modes. A visual explanation of this phenomenon is provided that reproduces the main features to rather good accuracy.

The Casimir densities for a sphere in the Milne universe

The influence of a spherical boundary on the vacuum fluctuations of a massive scalar field is investigated in background of $(D+1)$-dimensional Milne universe, assuming that the field obeys Robin boundary condition on the sphere. The normalized mode functions are derived for the regions inside and outside the sphere and different vacuum states are discussed. For the conformal vacuum, the Hadamard function is decomposed into boundary-free and sphere-induced contributions and an integral representation is obtained for the latter in both the interior and exterior regions. As important local characteristics of the vacuum state the vacuum expectation values (VEVs) of the field squared and of the energy-momentum tensor are investigated. It is shown that the vacuum energy-momentum tensor has an off-diagonal component that corresponds to the energy flux along the radial direction. Depending on the coefficient in Robin boundary condition the sphere-induced contribution to the vacuum energy and the energy flux can be either positive or negative. At late stages of the expansion and for a massive field the decay of the sphere-induced VEVs, as functions of time, is damping oscillatory. The geometry under consideration is conformally related to that for a static spacetime with negative constant curvature space and the sphere-induced contributions in the corresponding VEVs are compared.

Angular distribution of high power radiation from a charge rotating around a dielectric ball

We study the angular distribution of the radiation from a relativistic charged particle uniformly rotating along an equatorial orbit around a dielectric ball. Earlier it was shown that for some values of the problem parameters and in the case of weak absorption in the ball material, the radiation intensity on a given harmonic can be essentially larger than that for the same charge rotating in the vacuum or in a homogeneous transparent medium having the same real part of dielectric permittivity as the ball material. The generation of such high power radiation is a consequence of the constructive superposition of electromagnetic oscillations of Cherenkov radiation induced near the trajectory of the particle and partially locked inside the ball. The angular distribution of the number of the emitted quanta is investigated for such high power radiation. It is shown that the radiation is mainly located in the angular range near the rotation plane determined by the Cherenkov condition for the velocity of the charge image on the ball surface. The numerical analysis is given for balls made of strontium titanate, melted quartz and teflon in the gigahertz and terahertz frequency ranges.

The Casimir effect for fermionic currents in conical rings with applications to graphene ribbons

We investigate the combined effects of boundaries and topology on the vacuum expectation values (VEVs) of the charge and current densities for a massive 2D fermionic field confined on a conical ring threaded by a magnetic flux. Different types of boundary conditions on the ring edges are considered for fields realizing two inequivalent irreducible representations of the Clifford algebra. The related bound states and zero energy fermionic modes are discussed. The edge contributions to the VEVs of the charge and azimuthal current densities are explicitly extracted and their behavior in various asymptotic limits is considered. On the ring edges the azimuthal current density is equal to the charge density or has an opposite sign. We show that the absolute values of the charge and current densities increase with increasing planar angle deficit. Depending on the boundary conditions, the VEVs are continuous or discontinuous at half-integer values of the ratio of the effective magnetic flux to the flux quantum. The discontinuity is related to the presence of the zero energy mode. By combining the results for the fields realizing the irreducible representations of the Clifford algebra, the charge and current densities are studied in parity and time-reversal symmetric fermionic models. If the boundary conditions and the phases in quasiperiodicity conditions for separate fields are the same the total charge density vanishes. Applications are given to graphitic cones with edges (conical ribbons).

Synchrotron radiation from a charge circulating around a cylinder with negative permittivity

We investigate the radiation from a charged particle rotating around a dielectric cylinder with a negative real part of dielectric permittivity. For the general case of frequency dispersion in dielectric permittivity, expressions are derived for the electric and magnetic fields and for the angular density of the radiation intensity on a given harmonic. Compared with the case of a cylinder with positive real part of the permittivity, new interesting features arise in the nonrelativistic limit and for the radiation at small angles with respect to the cylinder axis. Another feature is the appearance of sharp narrow peaks in the angular density of the radiation intensity for large harmonics. We analytically estimate the height, width and the location of these peaks. The influence of the imaginary part of dielectric permittivity on the characteristics of the peaks is discussed. The analytical results are illustrated by numerical examples. We show that the radiation intensity on a given harmonic, integrated over the angles, can be essentially amplified by the presence of the cylinder.

Fermionic vacuum currents in topologically nontrivial braneworlds: Two-brane geometry

The vacuum expectation value (VEV) of the fermionic current density is investigated in the geometry of two parallel branes in locally AdS spacetime with a part of spatial dimensions compactified to a torus. Along the toral dimensions quasiperiodicity conditions are imposed with general phases and the presence of a constant gauge field is assumed. Different types of boundary conditions are discussed on the branes, including the bag boundary condition and the conditions arising in $Z_{2}$-symmetric braneworld models. Nonzero vacuum currents appear along the compact dimensions only. In the region between the branes they are decomposed into the brane-free and brane-induced contributions. Both these contributions are periodic functions of the magnetic flux enclosed by compact dimensions with the period equal to the flux quantum. Depending on the boundary conditions, the presence of the branes can either increase or decrease the vacuum current density. For a part of boundary conditions, a memory effect is present in the limit when one of the branes tends to the AdS boundary. Unlike to the fermion condensate and the VEV of the energy-momentum tensor, the VEV of the current density is finite on the branes. Applications are given to higher-dimensional generalizations of the Randall-Sundrum models with two branes and with toroidally compact subspace. The features of the fermionic current are discussed in odd-dimensional parity and time-reversal symmetric models. The corresponding results for three-dimensional spacetime are applied to finite length curved graphene tubes threaded by a magnetic flux. It is shown that a nonzero current density can also appear in the absence of the magnetic flux if the fields corresponding to two different points of the Brillouin zone obey different boundary conditions on the tube edges.

Fermionic currents in topologically nontrivial braneworlds

We investigate the influence of a brane on the vacuum expectation value (VEV) of the current density for a charged fermionic field in background of locally AdS spacetime with an arbitrary number of toroidally compact dimensions and in the presence of a constant gauge field. Along compact dimensions the field operator obeys quasiperiodicity conditions with arbitrary phases and on the brane it is constrained by the bag boundary condition. The VEVs for the charge density and the components of the current density along uncompact dimensions vanish. The components along compact dimensions are decomposed into the brane-free and brane-induced contributions. The behavior of the latter in various asymptotic regions of the parameters is investigated. It particular, it is shown that the brane-induced contribution is mainly located near the brane and vanishes on the AdS boundary and on the horizon. An important feature is the finiteness of the current density on the brane. Applications are given to $Z_2$-symmetric braneworlds of the Randall-Sundrum type with compact dimensions for two classes of boundary conditions on the fermionic field. In the special case of three-dimensional spacetime, the corresponding results are applied for the investigation of the edge effects on the ground state current density induced in curved graphene tubes by an enclosed magnetic flux.

Electromagnetic vacuum densities induced by a cosmic string

We investigate the influence of a generalized cosmic string in (D+1) -dimensional spacetime on the local characteristics of the electromagnetic vacuum. Two special cases are considered with flat and locally de Sitter background geometries. The topological contributions in the vacuum expectation values (VEVs) of the squared electric and magnetic fields are explicitly separated. Depending on the number of spatial dimensions and on the planar angle deficit induced by the cosmic string, these contributions can be either negative or positive. In the case of the flat bulk, the VEV of the energy-momentum tensor is evaluated as well. For the locally de Sitter bulk, the influence of the background gravitational field essentially changes the behavior of the vacuum densities at distances from the string larger than the curvature radius of the spacetime.

Scalar Casimir densities and forces for parallel plates in cosmic string spacetime

We analyze the Casimir densities and forces associated with a massive scalar quantum field confined between two parallel plates in a D-dimensional cosmic string spacetime. The plates are placed orthogonal to the string and the field obeys the Robin boundary conditions on them. The boundary-induced contributions are explicitly extracted in the vacuum expectation values (VEVs) of the field squared and energy-momentum tensor for both single and two plates. The VEV of the energy-momentum tensor, in additional to the diagonal components, contains an off-diagonal component corresponding to the shear stress. The latter vanishes on the plates in special cases of Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions. For points outside the string core the topological contributions in the VEVs are finite on the plates. Near the string the VEVs are dominated by the boundary-free part, whereas at large distances the boundary-induced contributions dominate. Due to the nonzero off-diagonal component of the vacuum energy-momentum tensor, in addition to the normal component, the Casimir forces have nonzero component parallel to the boundary. Unlike the problem on the Minkowski bulk, the normal forces acting on the separate plates, in general, do not coincide. Another difference is that in the presence of the cosmic string the Casimir forces for Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions differ. For Dirichlet case the normal Casimir force does not depend on the curvature coupling parameter. This is not the case for other boundary conditions. A new qualitative feature induced by the cosmic string is the appearance of the shear stress acting on the plates. The corresponding force is directed along the radial coordinate and vanishes for Dirichlet and Neumann cases. Depending on the parameters of the problem, the radial component of the shear force can be either positive or negative.

Scalar Casimir effect in a linearly expanding universe

We investigate quantum vacuum effects for a massive scalar field, induced by two planar boundaries in background of a linearly expanding spatially flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker spacetime for an arbitrary number of spatial dimensions. For the Robin boundary conditions and for general curvature coupling parameter, a complete set of mode functions is presented and the related Hadamard function is evaluated. The results are specified for the most important special cases of the adiabatic and conformal vacuum states. The vacuum expectation values of the field squared and of the energy-momentum tensor are investigated for a massive conformally coupled field. The vacuum energy-momentum tensor, in addition to the diagonal components, has nonzero off-diagonal component describing energy flux along the direction perpendicular to the plates. The influence of the gravitational field on the local characteristics of the vacuum state is essential at distances from the boundaries larger than the curvature radius of the background spacetime. In contrast to the Minkowskian bulk, at large distances the boundary-induced expectation values follow as power law for both massless and massive fields. Another difference is that the Casimir forces acting on the separate plates do not coincide if the corresponding Robin coefficients are different. At large separations between the plates the decay of the forces is power law. We show that during the cosmological expansion the forces may change the sign.

Fermionic currents in AdS spacetime with compact dimensions

We derive a closed expression for the vacuum expectation value (VEV) of the fermionic current density in a (D+1)-dimensional locally AdS spacetime with an arbitrary number of toroidally compactified Poincare spatial dimensions and in the presence of a constant gauge field. The latter can be formally interpreted in terms of a magnetic flux treading the compact dimensions. In the compact subspace, the field operator obeys quasiperiodicity conditions with arbitrary phases. The VEV of the charge density is zero and the current density has nonzero components along the compact dimensions only. They are periodic functions of the magnetic flux with the period equal to the flux quantum and tend to zero on the AdS boundary. Near the horizon, the effect of the background gravitational field is small and the leading term in the corresponding asymptotic expansion coincides with the VEV for a massless field in the locally Minkowski bulk. Unlike the Minkowskian case, in the system consisting an equal number of fermionic and scalar degrees of freedom, with same masses, charges and phases in the periodicity conditions, the total current density does not vanish. In these systems, the leading divergences in the scalar and fermionic contributions on the horizon are canceled and, as a consequence of that, the charge flux, integrated over the coordinate perpendicular to the AdS boundary, becomes finite. We show that in odd spacetime dimensions the fermionic fields realizing two inequivalent representations of the Clifford algebra and having equal phases in the periodicity conditions give the same contribution to the VEV of the current density. Combining the contributions from these fields, the current density in odd-dimensional C-,P- and T -symmetric models are obtained. As an application, we consider the ground state current density in curved carbon nanotubes.

Electromagnetic vacuum fluctuations around a cosmic string in de Sitter spacetime

The electromagnetic field correlators are evaluated around a cosmic string in background of $(D+1)$-dimensional dS spacetime assuming that the field is prepared in the Bunch-Davies vacuum state. The correlators are presented in the decomposed form where the string-induced topological parts are explicitly extracted. With this decomposition, the renormalization of the local vacuum expectation values (VEVs) in the coincidence limit is reduced to the one for dS spacetime in the absence of the cosmic string. The VEVs of the squared electric and magnetic fields, and of the vacuum energy density are investigated. Near the string they are dominated by the topological contributions and the effects induced by the background gravitational field are small. In this region, the leading terms in the topological contributions are obtained from the corresponding VEVs for a string on the Minkowski bulk multiplying by the conformal factor. At distances from the string larger than the curvature radius of the background geometry, the pure dS parts in the VEVs dominate. In this region, for spatial dimensions $D>3$, the influence of the gravitational field on the topological contributions is crucial and the corresponding behavior is essentially different from that for a cosmic string on the Minkowski bulk. There are well-motivated inflationary models which produce cosmic strings. We argue that, as a consequence of the quantum-to-classical transition of super-Hubble electromagnetic fluctuations during inflation, in the postinflationary era these strings will be surrounded by large scale stochastic magnetic fields. These fields could be among the distinctive features of the cosmic strings produced during the inflation and also of the corresponding inflationary models.

The Casimir effect for parallel plates in Friedmann-Robertson-Walker universe

We evaluate the Hadamard function, the vacuum expectation values (VEVs) of the field squared and the energy-momentum tensor for a massive scalar field with general curvature coupling parameter in the geometry of two parallel plates on a spatially flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker background with a general scale factor. On the plates, the field operator obeys the Robin boundary conditions with the coefficients depending on the scale factor. In all the spatial regions, the VEVs are decomposed into the boundary-free and boundary-induced contributions. Unlike to the problem with the Minkowski bulk, in the region between the plates the normal stress is not homogeneous and does not vanish in the geometry of a single plate. Near the plates, it has different signs for accelerated and deccelerated expansions of the universe. The VEV of the energy-momentum tensor, in addition to the diagonal components, has a nonzero off-diagonal component describing an energy flux along the direction normal to the boundaries. Expressions are derived for the Casimir forces acting on the plates. Depending on the Robin coefficients and on the vacuum state, these forces can be either attractive or repulsive. An important difference from the corresponding result in the Minkowski bulk is that the forces on the separate plates, in general, are different if the corresponding Robin coefficients differ. We give the applications of general results for the class of $α$-vacua in the de Sitter bulk. It is shown that, compared with the Bunch-Davies vacuum state, the Casimir forces for a given $α$-vacuum may change the sign.

Fermionic condensate and the Casimir effect in cosmic string spacetime

We investigate combined effects of nontrivial topology, induced by a cosmic string, and boundaries on the fermionic condensate and the vacuum expectation value (VEV) of the energy-momentum tensor for a massive fermionic field. As geometry of boundaries we consider two plates perpendicular to the string axis on which the field is constrained by the MIT bag boundary condition. By using the Abel-Plana type summation formula, the VEVs in the region between the plates are decomposed into the boundary-free and boundary-induced contributions for general case of the planar angle deficit. The boundary-induced parts in both the fermionic condensate and the energy-momentum tensor vanish on the cosmic string. Fermionic condensate is positive near the string and negative al large distances, whereas the vacuum energy density is negative everywhere. The radial stress is equal to the energy density. For a massless field, the boundary-induced contribution in the VEV of the energy-momentum tensor is different from zero in the region between the plates only and it does not depend on the coordinate along the string axis. In the region between the plates and at large distances from the string, the decay of the topological part is exponential for both massive and massless fields. This behavior is in contrast to that for the VEV of the energy-momentum tensor in the boundary-free geometry with the power law decay for a massless field. The vacuum pressure on the plates is inhomogeneous and vanishes at the location of the string. The corresponding Casimir forces are attractive.
