On The Eaton-Moretó Conjecture for Principal Blocks of Finite Groups

Let $G$ be a finite group and let $p$ be a prime. If $P$ is a nonabelian Sylow $p$-subgroup of $G$ and $m(P)$ is the smallest non-linear irreducible character degree of $P$, we prove that there exists $χ\in {\rm Irr}(G)$ in the principal $p$-block of $G$ such that $1<χ(1)_p\le m(P)$, giving one inequality of the Eaton-Moretó conjecture for principal blocks. This, assuming Dade's Projective conjecture, implies the Eaton-Moretó conjecture for principal blocks.

On $2$-blocks with quaternion defect groups

We determine the Morita equivalence classes of $2$-blocks with quaternion defect groups of arbitrary $2$-power order, thereby completing the proof of Donovan's conjecture for blocks of tame representation type.

Real 2-blocks in quasi-simple groups

We determine which quasi-simple groups have a non-principal $2$-block that is stable under complex conjugation. As a corollary, we determine that the Mathieu group $M_{22}$ is the only simple group not possessing a nontrivial irreducible Brauer character of quadratic type, answering a recent question of Gow and Murray.

Galois action on the principal block and generation of Sylow 3-subgroups

In this paper, we prove one direction of a conjecture of Navarro-Rizo-Schaeffer Fry-Vallejo positing an algorithm to determine from the character table whether a finite group has $2$-generated Sylow $3$-subgroups. This gives further evidence of the blockwise version of the Galois-McKay conjecture (also known as the Alperin-McKay-Navarro conjecture). A key step involves proving the Isaacs-Navarro Galois conjecture for principal blocks for finite groups with a certain structure.

Galois automorphisms and blocks covering unipotent blocks

In this paper we prove that a recent condition of Lyons--Martínez--Navarro--Tiep, regarding the field of values of extensions of characters in principal blocks, is satisfied for all finite simple groups, which when combined with their results gives a new characterization of finite groups with a normal $\ell$-complement for a prime $\ell$. This leads us to study the distribution of characters in unipotent blocks of disconnected reductive groups and show that this is well-behaved under a generalization of $d$-Harish-Chandra theory. We go on to study the blockwise Galois--McKay (also known as the Alperin--McKay--Navarro) conjecture for the blocks of almost (quasi-)simple groups above unipotent blocks.

Sylow subgroups and the number of irreducible characters of degrees divisible by a prime $p$

Let $G$ be a finite group and $p$ a prime. We establish an upper bound for the derived length of a Sylow $p$-subgroup of $G$ in terms of the number of irreducible characters of $G$ whose degrees are divisible by $p$. We also prove that if $B$ is a $p$-block of a finite $p$-solvable group $G$ with defect group $D$, then the derived length of $D$ is at most one more than the number of ordinary irreducible characters of positive height in $B$.

The Picky Conjecture for groups of Lie type

Recently, Moretó and Rizo proposed a conjecture, known as the Picky Conjecture, proposing new character correspondences extending the McKay Conjecture. We prove the Picky Conjecture for all quasi-simple groups of Lie type for non-defining primes. In favourable situations, we also obtain the stronger version postulating preservation of character values up to sign, and we show this stronger version holds in general when assuming certain natural properties of Lusztig's Jordan decomposition. Along the way, we complete the determination of semisimple picky elements in these groups by classifying picky 2- and 3-elements.

The Isaacs--Navarro Galois conjecture

We prove the original Galois refinement of the McKay conjecture, proposed by Isaacs--Navarro in 2002, providing an important subcase of the celebrated McKay--Navarro conjecture with several local-global consequences.

Towards the inductive McKay--Navarro Condition for groups of Lie type

We gather tools for proving the inductive McKay--Navarro (or Galois--McKay) condition for groups of Lie type and odd primes. We use this to establish a bijection in the case of quasisimple groups of Lie type A satisfying the equivariance properties needed for the condition. We also prove the inductive conditions for the subset of unipotent characters.

The McKay--Navarro conjecture for the prime 2

We complete the proof of the McKay--Navarro conjecture (also known as the Galois--McKay conjecture) for the prime 2, by completing the proof of the inductive McKay--Navarro conditions introduced by Navarro--Späth--Vallejo in this situation.

The $p$-rationality of height-zero characters

We propose and present evidence for a conjectural global-local phenomenon concerning the $p$-rationality of $p$-height-zero characters. Specifically, if $χ$ is a height-zero character of a finite group $G$ and $D$ is a defect group of the $p$-block of $G$ containing $χ$, then the $p$-rationality of $χ$ can be captured inside the normalizer $N_G(D)$.

On minimal positive heights for blocks of almost quasi-simple groups

The Eaton--Moretó conjecture extends the recently-proven Brauer height zero conjecture to blocks with non-abelian defect group, positing equality between the minimal positive heights of a block of a finite group and its defect group. Here we provide further evidence for the inequality in this conjecture that is not implied by Dade's conjecture. Specifically, we consider minimal counter-examples and show that these cannot be found among almost quasi-simple groups for $p\ge5$. Along the way, we observe that most such blocks have minimal positive height equal to~1.

Galois automorphisms and a unique Jordan decomposition in the case of connected centralizer

We show that the Jordan decomposition of characters of finite reductive groups can be chosen so that if the centralizer of the relevant semisimple element in the dual group is connected, then the map is Galois-equivariant. Further, in this situation, we show that there is a unique Jordan decomposition satisfying conditions analogous to those of Digne--Michel's unique Jordan decomposition in the connected center case.

On almost $p$-rational characters in principal blocks

Let p be a prime. In this paper we provide a lower bound for the number of almost p-rational characters of degree coprime to p in the principal p-block of a finite group of order divisible by p. We further describe the p-local structure of the groups for which the above-mentioned bound is sharp.

Characters and Sylow $3$-subgroup abelianization

We characterize when a finite group G possesses a Sylow 3-subgroup P with abelianization of order 9 in terms of the number of height zero characters lying in the principal 3-block of G, settling a conjecture put forward by Navarro, Sambale, and Tiep in 2018. Along the way, we show that a recent result by Laradji on the number of character of height zero in a block that lie above a given character of some normal subgroup holds, without any hypothesis on the group for blocks of maximal defect.

A normal version of Brauer's height zero conjecture

The celebrated Itô-Michler theorem asserts that a prime $p$ does not divide the degree of any irreducible character of a finite group $G$ if and only if $G$ has a normal and abelian Sylow $p$-subgroup. The principal block case of the recently-proven Brauer's height zero conjecture isolates the abelian part in the Itô-Michler theorem. In this paper, we show that the normal part can also be isolated in a similar way. This is a consequence of work on a strong form of the so-called Brauer's height zero conjecture for two primes of Malle and Navarro. Using our techniques, we also provide an alternate proof of this conjecture.

A Brauer--Galois height zero conjecture

Recently, Malle and Navarro obtained a Galois strengthening of Brauer's height zero conjecture for principal $p$-blocks when $p=2$, considering a particular Galois automorphism of order~$2$. In this paper, for any prime $p$ we consider a certain elementary abelian $p$-subgroup of the absolute Galois group and propose a Galois version of Brauer's height zero conjecture for principal $p$-blocks. We prove it when $p=2$ and also for arbitrary $p$ when $G$ does not involve certain groups of Lie type of small rank as composition factors. Furthermore, we prove it for almost simple groups and for $p$-solvable groups.

Brauer's problem 21 for principal blocks

Problem 21 of Brauer's list of problems from 1963 asks whether for any positive integer k there are finitely many isomorphism classes of groups that occur as the defect group of a block with k irreducible characters. We solve this problem for principal blocks. Another long-standing open problem (from 1982) in this area asks whether the defect group of a block with 3 irreducible characters is necessarily the cyclic group of order 3. In most cases we reduce this problem to a question on simple groups that is closely related to the recent solution of Brauer's height zero conjecture.
