Bounds on variation of spectral subspaces under J-self-adjoint perturbations

Let $A$ be a self-adjoint operator on a Hilbert space $\fH$. Assume that the spectrum of $A$ consists of two disjoint components $σ_0$ and $σ_1$. Let $V$ be a bounded operator on $\fH$, off-diagonal and $J$-self-adjoint with respect to the orthogonal decomposition $\fH=\fH_0\oplus\fH_1$ where $\fH_0$ and $\fH_1$ are the spectral subspaces of $A$ associated with the spectral sets $σ_0$ and $σ_1$, respectively. We find (optimal) conditions on $V$ guaranteeing that the perturbed operator $L=A+V$ is similar to a self-adjoint operator. Moreover, we prove a number of (sharp) norm bounds on variation of the spectral subspaces of $A$ under the perturbation $V$. Some of the results obtained are reformulated in terms of the Krein space theory. As an example, the quantum harmonic oscillator under a PT-symmetric perturbation is discussed.

Regular and Completely Regular Differential Operators

We define the concept of completely regular ordinary differential operators and give various criteria for operators to belong to this class. We give also criteria for Birkhof regularity of ordinary differential operators in terms of the growth of the Green function and basis property.

Dissipative operators in Krein Space: invariant subspaces and properties of restrictions

We prove that a dissipative operator in Krein space possesses a maximal non-negative invariant subspace provided that this operator admits matrix representation with respect to canonical decomposition of the space and the right upper entry of the operator matrix is relatively compact with respect to the right lower entry. Under additional condition when the left upper and left lower operators are bounded (the so-called "Langer condition") this result was proved (in the increasing order of generality) by Pontryagin, Krein, Langer, and Azizov. The Langer condition is replaced in the paper by a much weaker condition. We also prove: if a dissipative operator $A$ in Krein space is maximal then there exists a maximal non-negative invariant subspace $\mathcal L_+$ such that the spectrum of the restriction $A_+ = A|_{\mathcal L_+}$ lies in the closed left half-plane. We found sufficient conditions in terms of the entries of $A$ which garantee that $A_+$ is the generator of a holomorphic or $C_0$-semigroup.

On the eigenvalues of Sturm--Liouville operators with potentials from Sobolev spaces

We study asymptotic behavior of the eigenvalues of Strum--Liouville operators $Ly= -y'' +q(x)y $ with potentials from Sobolev spaces $W_2^{θ-1}, θ\geqslant 0$, including the non-classical case $θ\in [0,1)$ when the potentials are distributions. The results are obtained in new terms. Define the numbers $$ s_{2k}(q)= λ_{k}^{1/2}(q)-k, \quad s_{2k-1}(q)= μ_{k}^{1/2}(q)-k-1/2, $$ where $\{λ_k\}_1^{\infty}$ and $\{μ_k\}_1^{\infty}$ are the sequences of the eigenvalues of the operator $L$ generated by the Dirichlet and Dirichlet--Neumann boundary conditions, respectivaly. We construct special Hilbert spaces $\hat l_2^θ$ such that the map $F: W^{θ-1}_2 \to \hat l_2^θ$, defined by formula $F(q)=\{s_n\}_1^{\infty}$, is well-defined for all $θ\geqslant 0$. The main result is the following: for all fixed $θ>0$ the map $F$ is weekly nonlinear, i.e. it admits a representation of the form $F(q) =Uq+Φ(q)$, where $U$ is the isomorphism between the spaces $W^{θ-1}_2 $ and $\hat l_2^θ$, and $Φ(q)$ is a compact map. Moreover we prove the estimate $\|Φ(q)\|_τ \leqslant C\|q\|_{θ-1}$, where the value of $τ=τ(θ)>θ$ is given explicitly and the constant $C$ depends only of the radius of the ball $\|q\|_θ \leqslant R$ but does not depend on the function $q$, running through this ball

On the invariant subspace problem for dissipative operators in Krein spaces

We relax assumptions for a dissipative operator in Krein space to possess a maximal non-negative invariant subspace. Our main result is a generalization of a well-known Pontrjagin-Krein-Langer-Azizov theorem. Then we investigate the semigroup properties of the restriction of the operator onto the invariant subspace.

On invariant subspaces of dissipative operators in a space with indefinite metric

The theorem on the existence of maximal nonnegative invariant subspaces for a special class of dissipative operators in Hilbert space with indefinite inner product is proved in the paper. It is shown in addition that the spectra of the restrictions of these operators on the corresponding invariant subspaces lie in the closed upper half-plane. The obtained theorem is a generalization of well-known results of L.S.Pontrjagin, H.K.Langer, M.G.Krein and T.Ja.Azizov devoted to this subject.

Spectral portraits and the resolvent growth of a model problem associated with the Orr--Sommerfeld equation

A model problem of the form -iεy''+q(x)y=λy, y(-1)=y(1)=0, is associated with well-known in hydrodynamics Orr--Sommerfeld operator. Here (λ) is the spectral parameter, (ε) is the small parameter which is proportional to the viscocity of the liquid and to the reciprocal of the Reynolds number, and (q(x)) is the velocity of the stationary flow of the liquid in the channel (|x|\leqslant 1). We study the behaviour of the spectrum of the corresponding model operator as (ε\to 0) with monotonous analytic functions. We assert that the sets of the accumulation points of the spectra (the limit spectral graphs) of the model and the corresponding Orr--Sommerfeld operators coincide as well as the main terms of the counting eigenvalue functions along the curves of the graphs. We prove the estimate from below for the resolvent of the operator (L(ε)) associated with the model problem. It turns out that the resolvent grows exponentially with respect to (ε) provided that the spectral parameter varies at some compacts belonging to the numerical range of the operator.

Spectral portraits of the Orr--Sommerfeld operator with large Reynolds numbers

A model problem of the form -iεy''+q(x)y=λy, y(-1)=y(1)=0, is associated with well-known in hydrodynamics Orr--Sommerfeld operator. Here (λ) is the spectral parameter, (ε) is the small parameter which is proportional to the viscocity of the liquid and to the reciprocal of the Reynolds number, and (q(x)) is the velocity of the stationary flow of the liquid in the channel (|x|\leqslant 1). We study the behaviour of the spectrum of the corresponding model operator as (ε\to 0) with linear, quadratic and monotonous analytic functions. We show that the sets of the accumulation points of the spectra (the limit spectral graphs) of the model and the corresponding Orr--Sommerfeld operators coincide as well as the main terms of the counting eigenvalue functions along the curves of the graphs.

Multipliers from Sobolev space $H^\al_p$ into $H^{-\al}_p$

A function $q(x)$ is said to be a multiplier from the Sobolev space $H^\al_p(R^n)$ into $H^{-\al}_p(R^n)$ if the operator $Lf(x)=q(x)f(x)$ is a bounded operator from the first space into the second one. Let $M^\al_p$ the the space of such multipliers. In this paper we give the description of the spaces $M^\al_p$ provided the condition $\al>min(n/p,n/p')$. In the case $\al\le min(n/p,n/p')$ we obtain some embedding theorems for Sobolev spaces with negative smoothness indices into $M^\al_p$.

Strongly elliptic operators with distributional coefficients

We study operators of the form $$ L=\sum_{|α|,|β|\le n} D^αc_{α,β} D^β, x\in\mathbb R^n $$ provided that the coefficients of the main symbol corresponding to the indices $|α|=|β|=m$ are continuous while the other ones are distributions. Assuming that the main symbol defines the strongly elliptic operator we find sufficient conditions for the coefficients $c_{α,β}(x)$ which guarantee that the operator $L$ is well defined. In particular, if $c_{α,β}(x)$ belong to the spaces of multipliers from $H_2^{m-|α|}$ to $H_2^{|β|-m}$ then $L$ defines a maximal sectorial operator in $L_2(\mathbb R^n)$. We also describe the spaces of multipliers.

Schroedinger and elliptic operators with distributional coefficients on a bounded domain

We study the operator $L=-Δ+q$ on a bounded domain $Ω\subset\mathbb R^n$, where $q(x)$ is a distributional potential. We find sufficient conditions for $q(x)$ which guarantee that $L$ is well--defined with Dirichlet and generalized Neumann boundary conditions. The asymptotics of the eigenvalues and the basis properties of the eigen- and associated functions of such operators are studied. The results are generalized for strongly elliptic operator of order $2m$ with Dirichlet boundary conditions.

Sturm-Liouville operators with distributional potentials

In this paper we propose four different methods to determine Sturm-Liouville operator on an interval $(a,b)$ in case, when a potential $q(x)$ is a distribution from the Sobolev space with negative index of smoothness, i.e. (q\in W_2^{-θ}), where (θ\le 1). The main and second terms of asymptotic series for eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of these operators are obtained and the remaining terms are estimated depending on the class of smoothness of potential /(q/). Particular families of potentials, not belonging to the space (W_2^{-1}) are studied as well.
